IMHO the only reason to own the PS4 is if you want to play games.

Unfortunately it will not be coming out till the end of the year so if your primary interest is watching 4K material I would go for the media player that is supposedly coming out several months before the PS4.

I just saw this pj at a local integrator. I am building out a new theater and while I have no idea if native 4k is around the corner or not but the neatest trick i saw them do with this thing is go back and forth between 16:9 and 2.35 using just zoom and a masking screen. The idea being that by using the panels to create the image in the proper aspect and zooming to fill screen you can do away with the lens issues.
It was very nice.
Has anyone else done this in a real setting?
I am debating now about putting in 133" or so 2.35 screen with masking to 16:9 (I think thats about 110" 16:9) and having the ease of switching back and forth. The pj was def brighter than my JVC RS1
The picture quality was very impressive.
Does AVS sell these?

Yes and it works flawlessly!

I have a Stewart Vertical Masking Electromask Classic(StudioTek 130 G3) that is a 125" 2.35 screen that drops masking on each side automatically for 16.9 movies at 100".

I also have 2.40 programmed so when the aspect ratio changes I just hit the Position button on the remote and select one of the three.

The projector sends a command to the screen to drop the masking when I select 16.9 and then raises it automatically when I select 2.35 or 2.40.

The pj has the ability to memorize 5 aspect ratios.

The picture quality is totally awesome and with the auto zooming lens feature there is IMHO absolutely no need for an anamorphic lens.

I do not hesitate in recommending this setup as to me it is well worth the money spent.

Well regardless, everybody who owns a 1000ES should fill out the form as joerod describes. We shouldn't be left out without a fight.

So we are all on the same page the $200 form is for the Sony Media Player FMP-X1 https://sonystyle.custhelp.com/ci/documents/detail/5/98 not the PS4 Playstation.

There are currently incentives on the PS4 preorder page http://store.sony.com/p/PS4-PlayStation4-Console/en/p/PS410034 but not for $200.

I've not, as I'm doing all IP control...

Have you logged into the projector to see if there are comm settings there?

Well I got the Sony gamma software to interface with the projector, so the port definitely works. Just scratching my head over why I cannot get my Crestron to talk to it... It's either my port settings or my 35' long cable... ordered some bits and bobs to try and sort it out.

Just looking for confirmation of the port settings to make sure I at least have that part right: 38,400 N81...??

So I went to a Sony sponsored 4K event last night. They were showing the 55" UHD flat panel. I asked the presenter about hardware standards/upgrades (HDMI 2, etc.) and sources, and his response was that HDMI 1.4 is adequate for the consumer and there won't be any need to upgrade to a new hardware standard for the home theater consumer. He continued that he didn't know of any source material on the horizon aside from the provided Sony hard drive/media player.

After the presentation I spoke with a different Sony rep about the 1000ES, I asked him the same question, and he said without a doubt a new blu ray player is coming out in 2014, and HDMI 2.0 as well with Sony taking care of any hardware upgrades for current owners.

Which is it?

Convergence and focus drift...

Received my new Sony yesterday. Convergence was out by -30 on blue and of course focus was off out of the box and needed adjusting.

Watched a couple of films and found that focus and convergence had drifted and needed resetting, which I did and then shut the projector down.

This morning, went in to do some calibration and focus and convergence were out again by some way and needed tweaking, and once again at the end of the session there was some drift evident.

Is this normal with this projector and does it settle down once a few hours are put into the bulbs and electronics...???

Just watched another film from cold and found the following:

From cold I need -30 on the blue to get accurate convergence, but if I leave at zero then after about 8 minutes the projector is correctly converged and then stable for the duration of the movie.

Focus seemed stable from cold to hot this time, so maybe I did something to mess it up last time...

I'd rather not have to wait 8 minutes for convergence (last time I had to do this was with CRT...), but I guess I could let the projector warm up for a few minutes before screening...

Sorry to interject, not an owner, but i don't game and my player is a PS3 (never even touched the remote) with a Harmony IR adapter, it handles all my online media and BD 3D very well, leaving the A1UDCI to pull DSD duties.

I was once an early adopter for HDDVD, 4k can wait, but does not mean that I don't have little daemons prodding me to look up the 1000ES on ebay from time to time, the prices are dropping nicely too.

If you ask me, that is absolutly normal for projectors, that they need to warm up, before they are stable - thats why ,you never calibrate or adjust convergence on the projector, before it has been on for a 1/2 - 1 hour.

IMO - if the convergence is perfect after 8 minutes without any adjustment and it keep stable then, I think you have a very good one, and then just keep the panel convergens adjustment off and be happy smile.gif

Plus, by the time a movie starts, 10 minutes have passed. Sometimes I may turn my projector to watch a tv show or a game and that takes me at least 5 minutes. I don't see 8 minutes being a problem, but some people don't like to wait.

Thanks guys, that's encouraging. I can certainly live with 8 minutes to warm up as long as it's not a sign that something is otherwise wrong that might then fail out of warranty...

I've never seen this amount of initial drift in any projector I've owned, but then I've never owned an SXRD before so have nothing to directly compare against. Also slight concerns about ANY movement when we are attempting 4K resolution - if convergence isn't spot on and stable then we're not going to see full resolution...

I can certainly adjust my "workflow" to kick on the projector and let it start warming up while I then go and load discs etc to kill some time.

Another question: after yesterday's movie I went to the screen to check convergence and focus and noticed that the image was quite "wobbly" - there was a lot of "motion" in the paused test pattern - almost like the projector was mounted on a spring that was gently vibrating or perhaps better described as heat haze over the image. It wasn't visible from the seating position but was very obvious at the screen, and again I've never seen a projected image "wobble" this much. Normal for the Sony?

I know you are getting it replaced now, but to answer your question yes this is a regular menu setting. I'm not in front of it to tell you exactly where, I think it is in the submenu of the 3rd choice down.

You gotta watch the advice here I think wink.gif In the 3 1000ES projectors I've had, I've never had the warm-up issue you describe. But I guess you figured this out ...

To my knowledge none have been officially announced. If there are any coming out we'll hear about it during this years CEDIA Expo in the fall. You can expect any (if any) that are announced to still cost more than $10000, and more than likely higher than that.

Cost isn't really the concern -- the 1000 after all is much more than $10K. But if there were a brighter 4K / UHD projector available at a similar price point to the Sony, I'd have to give it serious consideration.
