Butterflies popped up on my server tonight. I'm downloading now. I checked my panel alignment, and it was off. After an hour of aligning, i noticed a decent improvement in PQ. I guess the alignment data didn't transfer or I reset it some how before the upgrade. In any event, you need the panels as tightly aligned as possible to max out the 4k benefit. This may be obvious, but worth a thought in case it slipped by without notice. How do you guys set the focus? Naked eye? Mag glass?

One issue that I have with the shorts is how much of the picture is out of focus. The depth of field in the camera is so shallow in so many cases. The honey bee clip is the worst. I have a 12' wide image with 2 sq feet in focus. I like the Redbull clips.

mine takes a good 20 minutes for the convergence to settle in (blue specifically), it's a little alarming when you first turn it on. after it's warmed up, I am nearly dead on with my adjustments across the screen and it looks great. I've been focusing manually and going back and forth until I can just make out the pixel grid which is a bit of a task.

good point on some of the shorts - they are trying to be too artistic with the very narrow depth of field. The Red Bull clip looks great, also there is an X-games clip worth downloading as well. I grabbed the Spiderman 2 trailer but haven't watched it yet.

I made quite a few comments on here about the perfect convergence of my unit without the need for the panel alignment electronic scaling. Now after the upgrade I swear it's off. Even after it settles for a bit. Wonder if even just taking it down and turning it over can disrupt the sensitive Zen balance of the mystical convergence mechanism. Oh well, guess I will just have to use a few clicks of the alignment tool.

I was motivated to check alignment myself tonight after reading these comments. Also figured with 500 hrs on my 1100, it was worth revisiting. Sure enough I needed a bit a red and blue shift to get things spot on. Double checked focus quickly while I was at it. Everything's looking good for the premiere of Game of Thrones biggrin.gif

Ben. There is no aligner of the panels. There are permanently aligned during construction of the optical block. What Sony and JVC give us is to ability using timing adjustments to move the image around on the pixel grid. In the case of the Sony, each click is a tenth of a pixel. If you shift ten clicks globally, the whole grid, you will lose one line of resolution in the opposite vertical (if shift is horizontal) and horizontal (if the shift is vertical). It really isn't lost because only that color is shifted and the image is over scanned more than anyone could shift it. The problem is with shifts that aren't in tens. These are subpixel shifts and have a small adverse effect on resolution and sharpness. The worse case is five tenths or a half pixel shift.

When you say to get the benefit of 4K you have to have alignment, actually you get a lower resolution or let's call them wider lines because the small distance between pixels is now incorporated. I think what you are saying is that the small color fringing that could be visible depending on seating distances, screen size, ones eyes detracts from the PQ and needs to be hidden electronically by the err convergence controls.

In theory, the maximum 4K experience would be without operation of the electronic shifting controls if you do not see the fringing from your viewing position. Of course with large screens and a push to close seating positions one may need to adjust the grid to avoid seeing the fringing.

I seem to find out after the fact. I called today and that was what a person who is in the know and whom I trust told me. He told me to call again in a week if I don't get my $300 worth of coupons. Its amazing how many of my contacts were laid off. Including some in the professional division for the really big boy projectors.

Give me a little credit Mark wink.gif I know we aren't moving the actual panel or pixels on each panel. The point was simply that the panels can be off enough that the alignment function of the projector may become important. It seemed to be in my case.

I'm not really sure what you are asking. I called about 2 or 3 weeks ago and they asked me to fax the Invoice which I did. Last week they called and said I would be getting an email with the voucher codes.

I know you know that. My point was your statement to get maximum benefit from or the increase in the number of pixels. Electronic subpixel alignment will not maximize the extra pixels but it may be necessary if you can see the misalignment and CA from you seating position. If you adjust because it is off when your nose is less than 2 ft from the screen but not from your viewing positions, you will not be maximizing the increased resolution.

Now that said. I am guilty. I adjust globally with my nose 6 inches from the screen. I know I am decreasing the resolution a bit but there is plenty left. smile.gif

I don't know for sure but why would they down rez those? Moreover if not already loaded, it takes a long time to download a trailer that is usually just a one to two minute trailer. most are just over one minute and they just look like a random one scene.

The Spider Man 2 (reboot) trailer looks good and the film is due out May 8th. It'll likely be one of my first purchases since I don't already own it on BD and the $300 is burning a hole in my "wallet".

I'd love for Sony to release Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on the puck in full 4K even if it takes up a lot of the puck. I don't want them to sacrifice PQ for space or bandwidth.

I hope the eventual Spiderman 2 released on Blu-Ray (if it's any good) is better than the Amazing Spiderman Blu-Ray. Yes, the detail is excellent (especially the 4K master) but for some reason it's a very dark looking transfer.
Not dark as in "lots of dark scenes at night" but just over all much dimmer than almost all my other Bu-Rays. I always feel like I need to get a new projector bulb whenever I put that disc on. Weird.

I agree totally, when I first saw The Amazing Spiderman I was sure there was something wrong with my VW1000 because the picture was so dim.eek.gif

The only movie I've seen at a commercial theater was Gravity, since I finished my theater. I recall like seeing movies for the first time on my system, but it is tortorus having to wait several months after the hype and theatrical release for movies that I really want to see. Good sequels are the worst.

Thought you might like to know !

REDRAY Notification

Stewart,

Our records indicate you have one or more REDRAY player(s) on order. REDRAY players are now $1250, off of backorder, and will be shipping again starting this week. Please review the currently listed specs for the REDRAY player on RED.com. We do not anticipate any further firmware development for REDRAY so the features you see are the full scope of the REDRAY player.

Please contact your BOMB SQUAD rep by 5:00pm PDT on Thursday, April 10th if you wish to no longer take delivery of your REDRAY unit(s). Otherwise, your order will begin processing.

Please do not reply directly to this email

Now this makes no sense.
$1250.00 off of backorder ? When I checked my open backorder from Feb 2913 it now says the price is $1450..00 with a total price of $1459.05.
Maybe their computers add $9.50 for our waiting in line ?
And there is no movement on the Odemax site so what can you play with their $1450.00 player ?

This has been discussed in another thread as well. I cancelled my order about 9 months ago and still got this email giving me about one and one days to cancel again or they will process my order. I called and cancelled again.

My understanding however is that red will supply some content that they own or have rights to such as Shot on Red demo stuff.

Just today got my email from Sony with the 3 codes for the 3 $100 coupons. The instructions (from Robert) are to first use 1 coupon, and when the account has diminished to < $50, I can add the second; $150 is the max that the SEN account can keep. Etc. for adding the 3rd coupon. I should get around to trying this out this weekend.

I got separate $30 codes, perhaps because I am a reviewer. I ran into the $150 limit and had to select some movies before I could upload more coupons. NOTE: many of the movies are the same as released on "4K Mastered" Blu Rays: Elysium, Men in Black (1), Battle Los Angeles, Ghostbusters (1), Taxi Driver, Total Recall (2012), Spiderman 1 (2002), Spiderman 2 (2004), The Amazing Spiderman (2012). In the coming weeks I will be comparing these. The additional titles available in the Sony Store are not very exciting, though there are a few classics (e.g. Bridge Over the River Kwai). There are also some "Mastered in 4k" BD titles not yet available in the Sony Store: e.g. Godzilla (1988), Glory (1989), The Quiet Man (1952). The Quiet Man is not a Sony release, the other two are. There are certainly others of which I am not aware.

Its like completing an obstacle course with victory getting the coupons. When you complete the course, you need to find a cold beer, the movies available for the most part are not worth drinking. However, sooner or later stuff will show up that you will want to buy and watch.

So far as I can tell, there is no time limit on using these coupons. So it should not be necessary to take what is offered at the moment. Correct?
