Has anyone used there puck recently? I purchased the "The Amazing Spiderman 2" last year because I didn't own it in any other format and didn't see it in the theater. That was the last time I used the puck. Is there anything new on it? After the upgrade, most of us have $300 in credit, but is there anything worth buying since then other than TAS2?

Guess I could turn it on myself, but figured it was time to resurrect this thread.

A few things. Fury is notable. That's on the X10 (probably on X1 as well), which is still waiting for Amazon 4K streaming.

Don't forget that the $300 credit is useable on anything at the Playstation store. So video games for you or your kids can be purchased, etc.

Sounds like other than Fury, they've not added anything new and no Amazon 4K either (which I won't get on my X1). What was Sony thinking when they decided to go with this hardware and service? Hopefully, the folks that came up with this stillborn mess were let go during the cuts.

I moved on to the X10 for ease of use without the tablet (and networking hassles that adds with VPN setup). Only a handful of new titles like Fury and Dracula. Let me put it this way, I haven't sat down to watch a download on it either way since last year some time. The Netflix app is good if want to stream House of Cards in 4K, but the puck hasn't got that unfort thanks to its older hardware. I just optomised my VPN well enough here to get a stable 30mbits and 4K streaming working with Netflix, which is cool.

Not having puck or brick I am trying to look at 4k demo clips. Using a late 2014 Macbook Air with Intel HD500 graphics card when I hook display port to HDMI input 2 I see the MacBook recognizing the Sony and listing sony pj *04 as display output. How can I check the actual output to verify I am getting 4K or 4K lite into the Sony? Can inout 1 be used for demo clips?

Hi Dave. Go to the info screen and the input signal being fed is one of the items on that screen. another check is that certain features available at say 1080p are unavailable, grayed out or absent on the menus, with 3840 or 4096 inputs.

Thanks Mark. I thought I had checked info screen. Evidently display port to cdmi adapter can't handle 4K. No cdmi output on laptop. Oh well. Perhaps I'll find a puck at a garage sale...

Ian, remember that $1770 had a $US before it, so actual price here was approx $2200 if I work back the exchange rate at the time (I can't remember precisely and don't have my work PC at hand to look up the invoice). Still what you've been quote is absurd really, but in a way doesn't surprise me given I was told the parts are were being costed a $2500 at the time and prob gone up since then, meaning they are also charging a fortune for the labour. I don't know what to tell you mate, other than your pretty much stuck there at that price with Sony.

Assuming one has done it before, it takes about 1 hour of very simple labor with most of the time working a lap top.

Just verifying my cost, now I can check the invoices now I'm on my office PC, it was $A2037 and they very kindly comped the labor cost. I was able to see the trade cost of the upgrade on another quotation as well which was put down as $A3750 minus GST when my 1000 was originally going to be given to a Sony dealer to sell post upgrade. So your quote is a bit more than the trade cost when you add GST back in. They do unfortunately have you over a barrel to a degree there as the alternative is pretty grim if you ever have aspirations to get 4K Bluray as most of us do.

Hi All,

I'm about to place an order for the VW-1100. Based in Israel, I need it for June and was advised by a local distributer I'd better place an order now, to get it in time.

Over here, it's about $27K, including shipping and tax, via that local distributer.

Before I place my order - would any of you be kind enough to let me know if I should wait for an external event, such as an upcoming announcement etc?

What I mean is that if a new model is likely to be announced soon enough, making the VW-1100 price better, or maybe a new model at the current price point, and all I need to do is delay my order by a couple of weeks / months, I'll consider doing that.

I hate the thought of placing an order and finding out a month later I missed out on a soon to be announced new model / discount.

This thread has so far been very helpful so I'm hoping someone would be kind enough to contribute any relevant info.
Best, Shahar

Unfortunately I think you are safe to buy the 1100ES now. I say unfortunately because there just doesn't seem to be anything truly revolutionary coming out in the land of projectors. There are some laser and LED 4k units from companies like DPI that are supposed to be shipping this year, but those are $100k projectors. The "high end" $15k - $25k segment seems quite stagnant.

That being said, before buying new for $27k, I would look to see if any refurbs are available or a quality used unit from someone you can trust. That should get it into the $15k range.

Well, I would say while no one has likely heard anything (or is under NDA to keep their piehole shut), IF Sony were to introduce an upgraded version, say a 1200, it would likely happen in October at CEDIA, or perhaps a little later at CES in January.

I would think they are tweaking the processing and switching to 18gbps HDMI to more completely support the forthcoming Blu Ray standard (to the extent of the existing panel capabilities).

IMO
If you not in a hurry ( say 6 -12 months ) , I would waite - its not going to be more expensive !

Or as others has suggested, buy a refurb or used one and save a lot of Money

+ new and exciting models will arrive - IF you not in a hurry

Buy the 350es now for $7-8k. Wait for the new replacement vw1100es with 18gbps HDMI. Then sell your 350es, maybe you'll loose $2k

I guess one other thing to hope for is for Sony to put their laser light engine into the vw1100es. They already have it in the short throw unit they sell. I wonder why they haven't put it into a normal projector yet. Maybe its way larger to cool the light engine? I have not seen the short throw unit in person.

It would require a total rework of the projector. Modified light engine, modified power supply, modified chassis design (for cooling), modified processing to drive the lasers, ect. I think it would only be worth it if they could use one that yields at least the same amount of light output or more than their current bulb based 4K units can do. No one wants to take a step back from what's already available. This was/is one of the biggest limiting factors of LED projectors. Most don't want to bother because they could only get a ~700 max calibrated lumens from them. 1100 from the Epson model is more than 700 lumens but it's still no match for the current 4K units from Sony.

Agreed. I would not be interested in LED if there was meaningfully less light output than there is now with the 1100, unless there were major (grain free, color accurate, reasonable viewing cone) improvements in higher gain screens.

Yeah, but what I was saying is that its a "total rework" that has already been done. They already sell that projector except its in a short throw box of some sort. Its 2000 lumens according to Sony, so the same as the Vw1100es.
