That looks pretty good. How did you mount the curtains? It'd be a very long curtain rod to go from wall to wall. Where did you get those velvet curtains? or where they custom made? Fortunately, my grandmother is a pretty good seamstress, so if I have to, I could always buy the fabric and have her sew something up.

They were purchased from Target, may years ago. I did get a heavy duty Rod for them with three bracket points (Two outsides and one in the middle)to hold the curtains and rods up.

Its was a dual rod bracket as well, so I could layer the curtains.

Anyone looking to know if the upgrade to the Sony VPL-VW600ES is "worth" it. I say yes. And I plan on keeping this projector till LED light sources at ~1500 Lumens calibrated come out.

If anyone needs me this is the thread to reach me at, or PM me.

In a strict comparison to your old RS4810, I'm curious how you think this Sony compares in subjective sharpness, motion handling/resolution (smear), and contrast/black level. What are you subjective options? I'm thinking about selling my JVC DLA-X90 and ISCO IIIL lens and sled to fund that upgrade.

It's either that or possibly a Sim2 model, but I don't think I can afford one of those.

It works for me because of my screen size.

I'm not sure I would recommend for the price difference if you use a smaller screen or a high power.

What screen size are you using?

These blackout curtains from Walmart are awesome - thick velvety with a blackout layer - and inexpensive.

Here's a pic of my temporary HT with the curtains on both sides of a 135" screen. Ordered 4 of the 40" x 95" sets. Walmart site indicates red, but they are theater burgundy. Highly recommend, and you can buy cheap curtain rods that blend into the mix unseen.

Just stumbled across this thread recently. Very impressed with some of your setups. I don't qualify here with my sub - $1K BenQ W1070 PJ, but hey - Neenah's just a northern suburb of Milwaukee - and we're all Packers/Brewers/Badgers Fans, right?.... biggrin.gif

It's up and it works. I've never had a front projector before, so it's awesome smile.gif I haven't done any calibrations, tweaks, or anything yet, just hung it and turned it on. Only source connected right now is the cable box, will finish the rest of the connections over the next week or so. I have to build my new HTPC too, then I'll have access to everything on my NAS.

I also got the rest of the bar stools built, so here's what's sitting behind the "theater" area now too smile.gif

Very nice JeffK. I have had the 30ES for the last two years. Sony makes a pretty nice unit. Though I am not in the Milwaukee area I grew up in Mad town and still in the Midwest.

Nothing compares to a real big screen experience.

Ordered my screen today, a curved 150" Seymour XD screen. It will still be a few weeks before I can get it up as I just entered the drywall stage.

I was inspired by the black hole known as SOWK's HT. I was never planning to go that larger until I brought the Sony to your house and saw how good it looked on your 150" screen. I blew the budget with the curved screen for my A lens and the wow factor of a curved screen. Testing on your screen showed I really didn't need it, but I plan to keep this screen for a very long time so I justified the upgrade to myself.

I also went carpet shopping and will most likely install the same carpet Mcasico used in his. He posted pictures of his HT on page 6 of this thread. Not a pure black with the small gold stripes but it was only one of two I really liked and this one is actually darker black.

I stopped at the Sony down here and they had their new 4k LED tvs on display. All I can say is it brings HD to another level giving it an almost 3D effect. I was very impressed and I assume the Sony 4k projectors are the same but only on a larger scale.

OK, so I purchased my last upgrade for probably 2 years.

I ordered the Audyssey Pro Kit, to go a long with my Denon 4311CI Audyssey XT32.

time to start enjoying it after one last audio and video calibration.

Let me know what you think. I have thought about that kit, but not sure it would be a big improvement over REW and the PEQ (MniDSP 10x10HD) I already have.

Sounds like a pain in the butt actually....

For my Denon I will need to use the included USB to Serial Cable. My Laptop will have to be within 8 feet from my receiver.

I will not be in the room while calibrating my audio, so I will have to get a program like logmein to remotely control my laptop from outside the room.

I felt like I had to go with the PRO kit, as I do not trust the cheap customer mic that is included with the receivers. Plus I had to run an extension cable to get it to my MLP, so I'm sure I was not getting a "Perfect" calibration anyhow.

***
Once I am done calibrating my Audio with the Audyssey Pro Kit.

I would be offering audio calibrations as well to those who have pre/pros with a supported Audyssey chipset.

.

You can probably use a USB extension cable to extend that so you can have the laptop with you while performing the calibration. They're cheap, I just bought another one from monoprice the other day. I have a HTPC connected to my setup and bought a wireless keyboard/touchpad combo that uses a RF USB dongle to communicate with the PC. Well... it didn't have enough range, so I used an extension cable and now have the dongle extended to the ceiling right at my projector location and I get good, solid signal everywhere in the theater and bar area smile.gif I'm soooo glad I ran all the conduit I did, as I've already had to use it a few times and cables are pulled in minutes.

Yes, I have to use one to be able to run REW since my equipment is in the mechanical area located below my theater.

Greetings from Mequon. I'm glad to see there are other home theater obsessed people in WI.

SOWK it appears that my wife works with your sister. Small world.

Here's a few pics of my dual use family room / home theater. The screen was just upgraded in January to a Da-Lite JKP 1.3 (thanks Craig at AVS). The window treatments are open. It does darken down quite nicely with the black out shades closed.

Glad there's a local forum,

Woody

Great choice on the screen. Do you have the center channel above the screen?

You may want to try a Phantom Center Channel and see if you prefer the sound (dialog) more that way.

Yes, that's a Paradigm Studio center channel above the screen. The screen has a 12" drop so its about 19" above the surface. I doubled up a few pieces of cedar siding (painted flat black) to give the speaker a downward firing angle. Its an unconventional mounting location. I didn't want to loose the brightness going with an AT screen. If I did go AT mounting a center channel on the brick fireplace and hiding the cabling seemed painful. And I'd have to get wife approval on the mounting location. The location wound up being a dual use room sacrifice. The kids can't touch it which is nice.

Acoustically the location doesn't bug me too much. In picture most people's heads frame up on the top half of the screen. From a seated position as a viewer I'm looking up at that part of the screen so dialog doesn't seem too out of place.
