Hello everyone,

A local alternative cinema is looking for a not-too-costly digital projector to replace its ancient 4:3 beamer. It's a place run by volunteers and budget is limited to around US$10,000-12,000. The place mainly shows 35mm vintage prints, but there's need for a better digital option since more and more distributors offer solely digital versions of their catalogue titles, often on digibeta, sometimes blu-ray.

The screen has a width of 8.4 metres (27.6 ft) and height of 3.9 metres (12.80 ft) - the projector has to be placed 10 metres (33 ft) from the screen. The place is completely light-controlled, obviously.

Can anyone share some tips when it comes to models within the budget range - with enough lumen to cope with a huge screen and a usable placement option for the stated range of 10 metres?

Here is a recent thread by someone with similar requirements:

You may have problems with placement though - not many projectors have a 1.1x throw ratio. You may get around that with an anamorphic lens, especially considering that you have a scope-ratioed screen to begin with. A horizontal-expand lens would shorten the throw and give you some extra brightness. Have a look in the 2.35:1 Constant Image Height Chat.

The Single chip DLP from Sanyo/Eiki/Christie, first generation is also available from Vivitek. 6K lumens max. Sharp and bright from the single review in the 20K+ forum. Yeah list was 2K plus 2K for lens, but it ended up going around 12K. So right in your budget.
