I posted this in the "under 3K" forum as well...because this is me deciding between a PJ under 3K and over 3K i thought it would be alright to get input from both groups. Mods, i hope this is ok.

I'm about to buy my third projector. My first was a 720P BenQ PE8700+. My current one is a Panasonic AE2000U. Its been great (i've gone through five bulbs) but i'm having some problems with the fans (they are getting loud) and i'm getting the itch for 3D.

My usage breaks down like this:

50% TV (half sports half programs)
40% video games
10% movies/blu ray

As you can see lag is important to me. That sort of takes the Epson projectors out of the equation.

This set up is in my living room. It is pretty well darkened when i close the drapes and the doors, but most often there is some ambient light. A lamp, a window, the kitchen light coming in through an open door. The walls and floor are dark, but the ceiling is white. You get the idea.

My screen is a 92" diagonal 16:9 Da-lite 1.3 gain screen. My projectors are ceiling mounted.

I'm debating between the Optoma HD33 and the Sony VPL-HW30AES. These are worlds apart in cost, I know, but I've always sort of gone for what I thought was the best "value" and the right choice for me at the time.

My concern with the Optoma is the contrast ratio. At 4000:1 it seems like its pretty weak in that department. I feel like I'd be taking a step back from my current set up and that concerns me. I like that it gets 1080P 3D at a good price, but I don't know if its good enough and I can't find anyone near me with one to see.

The Sony seems like an almost perfect projector, but it's twice the price. Is it really worth that much more money?

I know I've seen some posts on here of people that have seen both projectors. What suggestions do you have? Is there another projector I'm missing that is less than $3000 (the sony is close enough at 3200 including glasses and emitter), that handles lag well, is bright, cheap replacement bulbs (i'm sick of paying $400 for panny bulbs) and is 3D?

(the epsons i didn't include because of gaming lag and the panny 7000 i took out because by the time you add the 3D glasses it is the same price as the sony and I think I would prefer the sony at the same cost. the idea here is if it is worth it to spend twice the amount)

Thanks for any input/advice/etc

You have already hit on contrast so I wont say that, but another thing to keep in mind is there are no 3D glasses with the HD33 ( I would go with RF glasses if you get it) and there are two glasses included with the sony..I have had both and they both are fantastic projectors...my wife is one of the few people who get headaches from the Rainbow effect so if you are affected by that (theres a chance but its doubtful) thats something to keep in mind...Other then that they are both quality projectors, the HD33 has a wonderful image and the 3D is superb..the fan noises arent too bad and you cant beat bulb life. Where it does lack is warranty compared to the sony, and the 3D glasses but I think that breaks down to if you feel like spending 2000 more for the projector itself.
