The BenQ will be brighter for 3D than the Optoma HD8300, its got better positioning flexibility and is a good all round projector for all sorts of things, sport, movies, gaming and of course 3D. The Optoma HD8300 has better black levels so will have the edge on the BenQ for 2D movie viewing.
But if its 2D only your after - then the HD8300 isn't great value and neither is the BenQ. You will certainly be on the right track with the HD8600 as its a mighty fine projector and will be fair bit in front of the HD8300. Its a shame you can't access the HD87 which is available in Europe. Its the 8600 replacement and one of the biggest improvement is that's its dynamic iris is superb - the 8600 iris just isn't quite as refined and its more noticeable in use.
The HD87 is the best projected image I've ever seen and I've seen quite a few, including a couple of Sim2 PJ's at over £10k. I don't have it any more, I moved it on to go for 3D and got the BenQ w7000. I've owned a couple of JVC's and while they have better blacks (but not by huge margin), the Optoma HD87 has more pop but also a more detailed, almost 3D like look to it. The HD8600 will therefore be quite similar - I've no idea how much it would cost v the competition but its certainly worth investigating.
