That's what I see as well, brightness takes a couple minutes to get to full tilt but focus always seems spot on. I'm certainly not an expert but that's what I see with 190+ hours on the odometer.

I had the same problem with my unit. I would focus picture, it looked excellent. When I powered the projector off at night then powered back up the next day the picture would not be focused. My unit would take up to 1.5 hr. to stabilize. After 1.5 hr. warm-up the projector would get a lot sharper but never back to original sharpness level. I thought my eyes were getting bad. Contacted Sony. Replacement unit was sent out. Customer Service person told me after 200 hrs. The projector should take no more than 15 mns. to reach previous sharpness

About to turn the switch on the Sony, one thing some are saying is that it doesn't perform well with 3D games and have suggested the JVC X35. I can't find any articles are even specifics, but for 3D the only thing I'm interested in is when I'm playing FPS games.

I do know the lag time is better on the Sony than the JVC though the JVC is probably not a problem.

Hard to pick. This article http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/article/we-three-projectors?page=0,3 likes the JVC.

This is my first projector, I've considered just buying a BenQ W7000 too, since it is my first and probably will be thrilled even with that.

Hi,

I own both the Sony HW50 and the Benq W7000. For Gaming in 3D (not 2D!) I would definitively recommend the W7000 over the HW50. With the HW50 the ghosting is very little when watching 3D movies from Blu-Ray's because the the panel runs at only 48Hz. However, when playing games in 3D it runs at 50 or 60 Hz per eye. Especially at 60 Hz 3D the panel of the HW50 is at its limits, resulting in some obvious ghosting issues.

I've played a couple things in 3d on the 50 and its been great. (PS3) The lag is not noticeable and I do not see any ghosting.

Those are the two exact projectors I'm trying to decide between. Most of my movies and games will be 2D, but I do want the 3D to be good. But my biggest concern is 2D.

I'm looking at a $2000 difference and am not sure I'd notice that difference if I just bought the W7000. Of course when you add in the glasses and an extra bulb that gap does shrink down a bit. This is my first projector if that matters, but I would love to buy once and not worry about it for a long while.

It'd be great to hear your impressions between these two.

I am sure most of you have heard about the new HW60WI (or ES) that has been shown in Europe... for those of you who haven't, it is a supposed replacement for the highly regarded HW50ES that most of you love. It is going to be on a HW95ES frame (for lack of a better description)
and have the following which the current HW50ES does not have... from what I have seen so far, everything else is the same on the two.

Motorized lens
Zoom memory
WHDMI (Wireless HDMI)

preliminary reports have it going for about 4000 euro, or a little over $5000 US.

.... I am having a new house built with a dedicated theater... I will have a 16:9 screen. I already have Conduit ran for the HDMI cable which will come from my Denon 4520CI (through a darbee) and to the projector, with everything inputting to the Denon.

The Denon has vertical stretch on Video

This will be my first projector so excuse me if there is something obvious I am missing or don't understand

but here is my question... Will I ever need a motorized Lens and Zoom memory? I already don't need the wireless... If I want anamorphic ( I think that is what it is called) to be full screen, I think the Denon can adjust the picture.

So would these features be worth around a $2000 difference between the currently available HW50ES or the soon to come HW60WI? With a new house, there are a lot of things I could spend $2000 on rolleyes.gif

I am thinking there may be even more of a price drop on the HW50ES as the new ones come out

Thanks

I am very happy with the 50 and probably wouldn't upgrade for the lens and zoom memory alone, but if I were waiting to buy new, I'd probably go with the 60. One thing to note - the Denon Vertical Stretch is for when you use an Anamorphic Lens, I believe. Without an A-Lens, the picture would be distorted.

$2000 is a bit steep for these extra features so I have to imagine there might be some optics differences as well. Seeing that an A-Lens or Processor can be had for around that same price, it might be a better path to take instead.

At the price you listed, the 60 seems more like an in-between model rather than a replacement, which means the 50 would probably stay priced the same. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Does anyone know how I can get the manual that will allow me to contact the HW50 using the RS232 port?

Can't seem to find it anywhere.

Just got my projector tonight and it was amazing. However, I wasn't as impressed with the 3D like the demo I saw of the JVC.

Anyways, if someone knows how I can get this, let me know.

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks and have a good day!

Got a great package deal for Paradigm+Sony+Dragonfly; I go to finalize tomorrow.

I'm considering having the ht dealer do the screen and projector install; smart? and how much should that cost?

What type of mount do I need for this (ceiling mount, there is a room above it that gets some kid traffic); the ht dealer was telling about the "special" mount for the 50es. Not sure I'm buying that story.

I use this same mount. Works great. It comes with 4 arms, but the Sony only needs 3. Has fine adjustment screws and a couple of locking mechanisms as well so that you can be sure it will stay up!

If you need an adjustable column, I used this one (Column) - screws right into the Peerless mount.

I have a question about the mounting postion of the Sony. My room is 22ft long wall to wall so I can mount the projector anywhere in that range, but if I want the best contrast and most accurate image should I stay within in the middle of the range? (1.27x zoom) and mount it 15ft back from the screen?

Today after 3.5 weeks of vacation, I powered up my hw50 projector and watched few shows. At first I didn't realize, but after a while I payed attention to the black level. Before it used to be almost pitch black(subjective and I know not really pitch black but really black anyway), but today it looked more like my old optoma 720p dlp projector. Really gray black even thought iris full closed and all the settings same. Ttried to find the problem and so far nothing. Even my gf card settings were the same ycbcr 4:4:4, which I've been using for months.

Anyone else had this kind of experience? Maybe some settings in my pj or computer that I have missed?

The flicker you see is normal and is because the 3d on blu rays runs and 48hz on the hw50es. I can see It on bright scenes as well.

It is normal if you have enabled the "projection" setting.

That setting is not avalible in 3d mode, 3d blu rays will always have a bit of flicker. 3d gaming is at 60hz so there is no flicker but you will get more crosstalk.

That is normal for all of these types of threads. People don't come here every few weeks to say 'I love my projector and have no issues', they come here to ask questions about real or perceived issues. Any consumer grade device is going to have a decent number of limitations/issues/faults and you are going to have a certain percentage of faulty units in the production run.

I'm also waiting for my Sony HW50 to arrive, I'm a previous Panasonic owner (owned the 4000u, 7000u, and 8000u). It's been back-ordered for at least two weeks, but I got a great price online so I had to jump on it. I just recently also purchased a lumagen to handle my aspect ratio changes (i have a 2:35 screen) and I can't wait to rent a calibration meter with Calman from Spectracal.com.
