This new Sony version is the first time I've actually bought the movie...I rented it years ago on DVD.

I had it on DVD. Then there was the Sony " Superbit " DVD. Then the Blu Ray..........

It was one of " The Demo Discs " back in the day. If you had a home theater, you had to have The 5th Element on Superbit. It was a requirement !

Once the UHD release comes out, I can finally retire my beloved FE Laser Disc...

somewhere Mark H's head is exploding over the discussion of this movie. Apparently it was one of the most watched / discussed movies when HD was first released.

I am still patiently waiting for an HD copy of 'The Abyss' to be released. One of my favorite movies - hard to believe it's not out yet. Maybe JC is waiting for for the 30th anniversary

I can hook you up with a VERY nice 1080i HDTV broadcast of the theatrical cut if you'd like. Some frame captures:

Thanks for the reminder - I completely forgot that I have this! that's what I get for 20+ TB of movies, easy to lose track. I would still like to see a good transfer with behind the scenes footage.

I remember seeing this in 1989 and folks were going nuts when we saw the 'liquid' alien. 2+ years before anyone saw the T1000.

Now how on earth did you manage to get a hold of that?

Flight to Germany + DVR. Anything for such a great, underrated movie..

edit: it's only the Theatrical release - I much prefer the directors cut where you finally learn why the Aliens's are going to let the planet blow up. back in 1989, it was unheard of to have a 3 hour movie, they left so much on the cutting floor with the Theatrical release.

The funny thing is, Mark H. said he has never seen the whole movie, just certain scenes a 1,000 times.

Cine4home edition review of the new Sony VPL-HW65ES:

http://cine4home.de/knowhow/cine4hom...hw65_c4hed.htm

Seems like near identical performance to the HW55ES unless I missed something? It would have been nice to see a "VW" 1080p model brought to the table instead of this unit. The VW95ES was a great unit. a VW95ES with more light output and a little more contrast, HDCP 2.2 and P3 support would have made it great if they could have brought it out near the RS500's price point. The lens in the "HW" line is terrible, but the "VW" 1080p line had a pretty nice lens.

only available on DVD. I don't want to give it away but there's a number of scenes that are added in the Director's cut that really help tie the whole story together. I remember seeing the DC for the first time and thinking THIS is the movie that should have been released, it would have had a better reception imo. Now it's no big deal for a 3 hour movie.

seegs thanks for the Cine4home HW65 link. This is JVC's year to shine (get it?? ehhh?)

Speaking of shoot-outs:

Cine4home has announced a shoot out, public invited, of various projectors on the same screen: The new Sonys, JVCs, Epson etc.
It will take place on Nov 20/21.

Info on their website:

http://www.cine4home.de/

I don't know if we have any german AVSers here, or if/where one will find any reports (I remember seeing a german AV forum somewhere...)

But just thought I'd mention it.

I'm not sure how JVC is going to handle the competition from Vivitek this year. Looking a bit closer at the Vivitek H9090:

http://www.vivitekusa.com/productdet...product_id=137

barely a 1000 lumens, no 3D, no CFI, HDMI 1.3, - Art noticed artifacts with the LED based DI - all for the low, low price of $9,995.

I know it's a .95 DMD with a good lens but it feels like we've been here before - years ago. a bit of a re-hashed Runco 750 or CineLED 1000. I can't imagine who would spend that much money on this projector today unless the street price was a fraction of the MSRP.

I think the Runco LS-1 for an MSRP of $3995 is a much better deal.

I sent my projector to Mendtronixs to assess the damage to my projector. Looks like I'm in the market for a new projector. The experience with Mendtronixs was surreal and it took 2 1/2 weeks for them to tell me that to fix my projector would be 2 times the original retail price. I've never seen or heard anything like this in my 46 years on this planet. I'm probably gonna stick with Sony since I loved my 55es just not sure which direction I'm going next ... Might try to go with the new 65es or try to get another 55es...

only a week or so away, looking forward to how they find it. am finding quite a conundrum re x5000/7000 and there is a bit of a price difference between the two and what I am leaving behind wiht a x35 am very happy wiht truth be told.

one thing am confused about is setting brightness with the iris on these two iris models and also what happens wiht the auto iris in all this.

on my x35 was a case of set iris for 14-16 fl and thats it bobs your uncle. wiht the two iris things is it a case of set the iris the same and the other one works dynamically ?

or do you set both. i.e. the 2nd gives more crank down. am wondering if I might have too much brightness with these new models coming from the x35...hopefully can crank down enough !

I posted a few weeks ago it fell off the mount...they said one part was $5k and it would be between $8k -$9k to fix. I'm thinking that they make their money off of warranty work. You could buy the projector on line and replace everything for less than they tried to charge me

whats with all these double posts. gees falling off the mount would be a disaster !

have considered getting another mount ? am using the peerless precision gear mount can highly recommend it for heavy large bulky projectors...secure and the ultimate in flexibility of installation

Think of it like a new car being totaled. Even a brand new car will be listed as totaled, when it costs more to fix than the car is worth.

You could try RVI. I don't know if they do Sony, but they charge a fixed $1000 for repairs. I just got my Planar back from them, and other than the fact that I didn't get my OEM packaging back (which really pisses me off since they told me I would) the repair itself was successful.

You know, I'd "forgotten" just how awesome the Planar 8150 was, well still is. It really is amazing what Planar did with that thing seven years ago, and in a way how little projector performance has changed in those seven years. I'm going to have to do a little more evaluation this week, but I think I'm going to put my RS4910 up for sale. I think as a package, and with my tastes and needs, the Planar is just an all around better performer. No lag to speak of, much faster HDMI switching/syncing, and I think I just like the picture better, or at least I'm thinking the JVC's big advantage in black level is limited to to few scenes to justify keeping it, especially when I need to keep the Planar for gaming.

Thank you! We will keep going once the new JVC's arrive, maybe pass a million views, who knows.

and we will still talk about 3D despite the angst against this extra dimension.

Considering that the HW55 is on sale, that was clever of them ! For $9K you could currently buy a set of three HW55's !

Congratulations on getting it back. But what is so hard about returning it in your original box? I'd dispute the credit card charge until they sent me the box, since not having the original box will diminish the resale value. And I'd call them and tell them as much.
