I highly recommend unRAID. Since they implemented Docker, it's become a very robust way to do everything you need. And if you go with a motherboard like this, you get 12 onboard SATA controllers:

My current Asus X99 Deluxe motherboard has 10 which is nice. But I've decided that my next dedicated desktop PC build is going to be MUCH smaller. This means a dedicated server will be necessary as I rip all my media to local harddrive storage. I love my Corsair 750D, but it's a monster case. I've swapped all my drives out of the RAID tower and into my main rig. It's been a lot more stable since:

Yeah, I decided when I did my last build that my main PC will only have SSDs from here on out. Spinning drives are for my server(s). 4 SSDs can fit in a pretty small case.

Yep, I saw that. I have mixed feeling about it though. I like to see new tech and formats being released, but I'm a bit annoyed that anyone with either a video processor or a projector will be unable to use it.

since all of this is early adopter (HDR10, HDR10+, DV) I think we are lucky that the current JVC/Sony/Epson projectors can handle HDR10 fairly well. All of those DV disks will have to support HDR10 as well so it's not like we will miss out on the content.

time to sit back a bit and wait for HDMI 2.1 to get cooked, everything is going to change all over again in 2-3 years.

thanks for the info on the recent Dune update for MyCollection GUI. I've owned the Dune for a year now and it's good to see them keep coming up with useful updates. It pretty much nails 2D / 3D BD ISO playback which was my main purpose after using the mede8ters for years with ISO -> MKV. Now I store all ISO and best of both worlds - full BD menu + direct movie playback. I have a 2TB drive installed and keep a number of my favorites on the drive for travel.

Hi yes it's the dune 4K solo. I've been using these different media players since ~2008 when PCH came out with the A110. Laptop hard drive inside player raw M2TS files with HD audio was great to see nearly 10 years ago.

The Mede8ter was good for it's time because it could play back the 3D MKV files but the Dune Solo is much better with full BD ISO support with BD menus.

I also run an HTPC as well but these are convenient to set up around the house. I really like the Dune Solo and getting another one for upstairs.

cleaning the HT room and found this, it was the upgrade document for the VW1000->VW1100.

This was quite expensive but did include the useless Sony 4K media player so that kind of made it ok. (no it didn't.. )

everyone was so excited to see 'real' 4K content a few years ago, folks were lining up to buy these 'upgrade kits'. Then we found the media on the Sony 4K units lacked HD audio and were expensive to purchase as well. Obviously no WCG and HDR since this was all before it's time.

then we bought the 'updated' media player (square this time, not round) and that was equally useless. Both devices went un-supported and faded away once UHD players were announced.

there is a lesson here. early adopters will pay. sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. It didn't in this case. There was no real benefit of adding the motherboard. especially once the HDfury was released. Then the panel degradation which was very unfortunate on such an expensive device. Also no full use of current UHD HDR content.

for today, I think we are stuck in a bit of limbo waiting for HDMI 2.1. Then all AV devices catch up to that cycle. In the meantime we have some excellent projectors that can look great with current UHD HDR material once set up properly and a number of folks thought that wasn't going to happen due to being too 'dim'. We also have ATMOS in the HT. Today's AV options are definitely better than 2013.

That is so true about things being much better than 2013. However, it just seem as it's not as fun as before on the forum. I rarely come on like before. So much tension and people being banned. Just not the same. We used to get excited about everything and there were more options. Maybe, it's because we have one projector that can do it all. I did enjoy having 3 that specialized in certain areas. It looks like DLPs are ancient, 3D is left behind, LED has not panned out, screen and projector companies vanished, and Lasers are crazy expensive. Just not the same for me at least. Hopefully, we can still have this thread bring life to use. This was the best all you need thread, but not too many shoot outs anymore.

Missed both screen and projector shootouts even during the late 2000s. After 2010 everything on the video side seemed like incremental improvements, no awakening til last year's models were announced together with the new HDR tech.

While I've heard stuff like Dolby Vision not working with home projection being mentioned many times I agree with Zombie that things will indeed catch up. We're still at an early implementation phase with this new tech. While these current projectors are concurrently still following the same standard settings from a design level it will just be a matter of time before technology will find its way and there’ll be all sorts of devices and software coming out later to the comply with, such as newer settings and improved gamma functions for HDR to make it the new standard to follow.

It will be interesting once were at the application level, more importantly, there'll be lots of changes to make things, such as a new standard, more compatible with devices. The JVC has already shown one important aspect in HDR and seemed to have broken that barrier in the CR dept. I'm quite hopeful we just started and there'll be more to come.

Get your IMAX screens ready for this:

Dunkirk 2017

Just last week I ordered a 115" 2.35 screen to get an idea of what my next screen might look like once I'm ready to upgrade. I don't have an available wall space to play around different sizes so I decided to grab a cheap one from the jungle and just resell or keep it as a back-up later.
Anyhow after watching that trailer - I'm now thinking of sticking to that 16:9 format.

Btw blee, has that screen company you were in touch with completely vanished? I emailed Michael not too long ago but haven't heard back from him.
I was in touch with him up until February. He was supposed to be creating another screen. Haven't heard anything since. It's a shame. I guess he didn't have the resources to manufacture the screens. The F3 was incredible. A 3.3 gain screen with very little artifacts. 3D and HDR dream screen, but he didn't produce anymore of them. I'm going to send him an email now.

Sorry I deleted my earlier post, I was gonna pm you.
That's too bad, he did say that they had some trouble with their workers in the factory...but that was a while back.

Let me know what progress has been made - in my experience there is only one true HDR screen and that's theirs. I'm sure you'll agree to that. I'll try to contact him next week and will let you know as well.

yes it did seem more fun when folks were excited to talk about any new projector that was coming out and a bit less arguments.

DLP did lose it's footing (no 3D come on, this is what they excelled in!) and business class native contrast? With manual lens controls? for $5,000? Runco is out of business, Sim2 doesn't seem to have anything interesting on deck. Now it's up to BenQ, Vivitek, etc to save the DLP day. it hasn't happened so far with these alpha level products based on the new DMD (no WCG, No 3D, no $$..)

LED fizzled out but I do enjoy using the LG PF1500 LED for TV viewing. non-stop for 2 years and still works like new. My projector rack still has the 3 projector stack, RS600, Planar 8170, Sharp 30K 3D DLP.

remember I started this thread because no-one in 2012 wanted us talking about 3D in the owners forum.

I welcome all to post here. The 3K+ forum has no 'general discussion' thread so all are welcome to discuss a projector they have seen or deciding on. Screen choices or great recommendations for a new movie for all to check out.

ok i'll give you that, the water proof tablet has been put into a pool several times over the last few years. it still works fine, no panel degradation on the Sony Tablet...

Anyhow after watching that trailer - I'm now thinking of sticking to that 16:9 format.
I built masks for my 142" 16:9 screen. I like having the 'mini-imax' experience with all the great documentaries and also movies that break out of the scope form like Ghostbusters (very cool with the effects leaking into the scope bars) and also Dr. Strange in 3D kept going back and forth between scope and 16:9. Same with the batman movies. For scope movies I install the masks.

@zombie10k

You have become the official forum historian.

Just don't look back of the expense of being a tech early adopter. I am pretty sure I could have funded at least one college 4 year tuition with that money; dating back to mt Atari ST and my Amigas.

I still have all my Amiga's... 500/600/1200/2000/4000. I learned a while back that the ST in the Atari stood for sixteen -thirty-two, which was a reference to the Motorola 68K 16 bit external bus with 32 bit internals. The amiga/atari/mac were all using that 68K Motorola of the time period. Well the Sega Genesis as well. super-nerd tech time.

The fellow who created the HDFury products was also a demo coder from the Amiga days.

According to Red Fox:

AACS 2.0 is not hacked. This disc (Smurfs 2 PAL) had faulty keys that were exploited. That's no conversion, so THIS is a real 1:1 copy. But other discs do not have this exploit.
