Thanks for the info/warning. Dunkirk just went from a blind buy to a rent first due to lame VAR.

This is the Nolan VAR assault starter pack..

Best Buy has been great this past year with pre-orders and steelbook exclusives. I primarily pick up movies from there now vs. Amazon who sometime skips the slip cover on different titles.

true.. he eases us in gently leading up the full assault in Dunkirk. I saw this in a real IMAX theater and looking forward to seeing this again.

Spiderman 3D / UHD this week, another 3D title missing the ATMOS track. have to 'fix' another one.

Apollo 13 UHD on deck, War of the Planet of the Apes 3D the week after. it's a great time of the year for movie releases!

Pretty sure all Nolan films are 2.40:1 safe. I couldn't imagine not buying a title because of VAR. If you have a 2.35:1 screen just crop it (my RS400 has electronic masking that I can use to cut 1.78:1 down to 2.35:1) or just let it spill like I did before I had the RS400. Its really not that big of deal, especially if its influencing your purchasing.

I crop all VA films to 2.35 with either my Lumagen or I can now do it with my X790. Some VA films frame better than others for constant scope, so best to rent first for me if possible.

This is my favorite time of year for movies as well. Just hoping a replacement lamp fixes my projector issues so I can start enjoying.

I couldn't even imagine renting my favorite movie of the year because of VAR. Even if I really hated it cropped (I'd like an example of that) I'd still buy it and watch it as 1.78:1. As I said before though, I have cropped every single VAR movie in my collection without issue, only exception being Hunger Games Catching Fire as it has like 45 of solid 1.78:1 content.

If I felt that strongly about the film I wouldn't let VA stop me from buying either, but I haven't seen the movie so who knows how much I'll like it. I'll rent first and take it from there most likely.

Transformers 4 and 5 both had wonky framing when cropped to constant 2.40 IMO. GotG didn't look great cropped either to my eyes. There have been others I can't recall off hand, but I agree most crop to an acceptable ( but obviously not optimal) level.

I misread that. I thought you said Dunkirk was your favorite movie of the year.

I tend not not notice a framing issue unless its egregious, which lets be honest, happens in fixed aspect movies too.

T5 was all over the place on aspect ratios....still cropped it.

I still cropped both T4 and T5 as well, but both looked pretty crappy quite often framed to a constant scope IMO. The pounding LFE helped me forget about the VA in T5 at least.

Nope, MSRP on the screen is $5,561.

once they fix 3D i'll pick one up. he also did a review over a year ago on the Dune Solo. there were many firmware updates since that review but shows it has very good image quality.

Dune Solo 4K review

It does an excellent job with 2D and 3D BD menu + seamless branch and allows for a 2TB drive underneath which is great for portability. hopefully they will upgrade this series with HDMI 2.0 + UHD capabilities.

I just pre-ordered all those, plus Kingsman The Golden Circle and The Dark Tower SteelBook all at Best Buy. It should be a great movie feast during the Christmas Holidays.

My dealer wanted me to try resetting the bulb just to make sure that wasn't somehow the issue which it wasn't (took it out and put it back in yest). I'll be contacting him again today and go from here. What a PITA!

Dunkirk is up for pre-order as well for 12/19/2017.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dunkirk...017/6138116.p?

someone on BD forum mentioned the aspect will alternate between 1.78 and 2.20

I'm ready for the full Nolan VAR assault this holiday season...

I've seen interstellar around 15 times and I bet Ill do the same with dunkirk... these two movies are ridiculous.

Now had interstellar been 3d that number would had doubled..

Fractional frame rates work perfectly fine for me. Fan noise can be controlled if you choose the hardware carefully. Lack of native YCbCr has never been a problem in my experience. Most displays handle RGB just fine. I've read about more displays having problems with incorrect YCbCr color decoding than with RGB. Just this weekend an LG OLED owner reported that the only way for him to get perfectly banding free grayscale test patterns is by using dithered 8bit RGB output with madVR. He says any kind of YCbCr source, or even using the internal LG media player results in visible banding. In the end what does it matter whether the video is transported as YCbCr or RGB to the display? The only thing that counts is final image quality.

I agree with lack of disc menu support, if you like that sort of thing, and power usage. Lack of native interlaced output is true, as well, but probably not very important, anymore, these days.

VAR bothers me also, but not as much as the excessive motion of hand held cameras in some films. I swear some directors are trying to make me sea sick!

I liked my Solo 4k too but unfortunately it died 2 months out of warranty. First media player to ever die on me. Got a Zidoo X9S as didn't want to spend that much on the player again. Generally happy with the Zidoo. Can't say like I feel I'm missing anything from the Solo 4K.

cant wait !

ps zombie seems T2 got pulled ? I read the below,

"We have just been informed by the official supplier Universal Sony Pictures that Terminator 2 Bluray/3D/UHD has been delayed.

The eagerly anticipated Terminator 2 James Cameron remaster has been cancelled until further notice. This is a global decision and affects all releasing territories. Due to unresolved faults on the 2D Blu Ray disc, we have been advised that the release will need to be pulled until all faults are rectified. Studiocanal are waiting for their technical team to come back with a timeline to correct the faulty disc. Needless to say this decision wasn’t taken lightly and given high level of hands on involvement from James Cameron, we feel that anything less than a perfect viewing experience isn’t going to be good enough. We sincerely apologise for the late notice and are grateful for the support already received on this title. We will endeavour to reschedule once we have all issues resolved."

apparently early next year now
