Hi guys,

I have been away for many years but my wallet is getting itchy again. I have currently got a Sony hw10. I have always drooled over jvc dila blacks but I could not afford them when I pulled the trigger on my hw10.

I have a totally light controlled room and I am black freak...I love the depth that great blacks provide...or projectors that can do great blacks.

My question is has anyone upgraded from a hw10 to a hw50es? If you have, please comment on black levels. I am currently projecting on a 2.7 meter wide screen in low lamp mode on my hw10 and it's plenty adequate.

I am mainly still into 2d viewing exclusively.

I have an old 10 and the 30 I played with last year was night and day better. dramatic improvement and the 50 is better than the 30 which I haven't tried.

Much better compared to the hw10. The 50es has Sony's newest 240hz lcos panels. So they have an inherent advantage from the panels themselves and on top of that Sony has a top notch implementation of frame interpolation. Used in moderation it will be night and day over the hw10.

Okay thanks for the feedback guys. Back in my days 4 years ago, the jvc was the only game in town...a bit like how the Nec vt540 ruled the roost 8 years ago. If the Sony can come close to the jvc in terms of black levels them we may a winner. It sounds like jvc has lost the plot a bit in terms on reliability in their units and 3d performance. I still remember seeing the blacks on the rs10 4 years back....I was astounded but the rs10 was aud$5k back then and the Sony hw10 was aud$2900 so there was a price gap.

I am perfectly happy with my hw10 in every aspect except for the reproduction of black levels but i think we are at the level where it does not add nor detrac from movie enjoyment...I mean to me we are there already compared to those black challenged days.

Agree. I use it in moderation with my 1000ES. But it does bother some. frankly, I can use it on low or tune it off and to me the picture is enjoyable either way. It depends on how sensitive you are to motion blur or the artifacts associated with trying to reduce it by switching it on. Its nice to have it available.
