Note the 2.83 long throw instead of the long throw much shorter I questioned above. 2.83 would be consistent with the zoom ratio of over 2.0 (I forget the official zoom ratio spec) published by Sony.

aso there are errors in the report. The contrast of the 500ES is not higher than the 1000ES. It is lower. Also reading between the lines of the report, the 500ES and 1000ES are not DCI compliant. The color space of the 1000ES with the switchable filter would be the DCI spec and the resolution at 4096 x 2160 is consistent. But the bit length is not. you can not hook up a DCI server either.

If it does sell for 13,500 in Canada then that suggests a US price of around $12,999, but I guess we won't know for certain until CEDIA (26 Sept. Sony press conference).

The VW500 is ~18CM (~7 inches) shorter than the VW1000.

Do we know if the 500 takes an anamorphic lens easier than the 1000 does?

As long as you don't scale the image to the full resolution of the panel you should be fine.

Is the lens recessed as far back into the body of the proj as it is with the 1000?

What difference here between UHD width and 4K width? The thing you need to do is to be at close to long throw where the size of the exit image is smallest. I doubt UHD or 4K width would make any difference in A lens/projector system performance,

Well, the 1.9:1 aspect ratio of the full panel with a 1.33x anamorphic lens would yield you an image over 2.5:1. So I'm assuming there's a mode to keep aspect ratio of the content on the Sony, no?

The present 1000ES has vertical stretch modes of 1.33 and 1.24 or 1.25, I don't remember which. However, they won't work with a UHD or 4K input signal. Not enough number crunching power. The 500 or upgraded 100ES might rectify this but I don't know. The 1.33 anamorphics are 2K lenses and should not be used. Of course they can be, and they don't look that bad, but why bother even if you already own one.

If you must use an anamorphic lens, you need a 1.24w one rated for 4K. Will set you back $15K. Why bother?

BTW The Sony panel is 1.89 not 1.90.

I do see your point that if you use a 1.33w lens you will hit close to the ideal of about 2.37 if you limit the image width to normal on the Sony which is 3840 x 2160 or 1.78 rounded.

I rounded up. Even with the .01 difference still yields you an image over 2.5:1 if one were to use a Schneider M lens like he was asking about. You'd definitely need to do 3840 x 2160 like you said. I suppose if one were to use an HTPC you do the appropriate image scaling with 4K content to send the 1000ES and use that lens.

I agree with you though. why spend another $15000 when you could zoom.

Brightness?

Anyone tried it (2k lens on 4k proj)? How bad is the quality loss? Can it be digitally corrected?

I remember one poster in the VW1000ES thread that I believe used an ISCO with his VW1000ES. If I get this projector, I will be using it with a lens. The projector can't throw a large enough image from my throw distance to fill my screen by zooming.

Sounds like you need to cut a hole in your back wall, Mike. Fortunately I have a closet in the back of mine, and the back of the 1000 has to just protrude into it a few inches to allow me to zoom to 144" W for 2.35 pics. It's a near thing; thank goodness for the very short min throw of the 1000.
