Thanks for the report! From the pics it seems you had less than ideal lighting conditions though, which makes me sceptical one could come to any conclusions regarding black levels of the 4k sony machines

They look like an interesting product. Do Extremscreen sell to the UK? I have a client who is installing a VW500ES into a less than perfect room (white walls). He initially wanted to put in a large 2.35:1 recessed React2 screen but they don't make them big enough. Do Extremscreen produce a similar product? I went to their website and there's just a forwarding email address.

Is there visible texture? Are these screens available in the United States? I'm looking for something like this to hang in my apartment.

You better contact them directly I'm only the happy owner of the Daylight version but they have plenty more other type of screens.

mail is : contact@xtremscreen.com

I know that I have already shipped screen in the UK and in Australia so I don't think that US will be a problem.

At this point I could feel hypoxia settling in and needed to go back on 100% O2. Let's just say it was a fighter pilot's way of doing dope. rolleyes.gif

I just finished giving my son a lecture about the craziness of smoking, I sit down rather disgruntled, feeling my words are probably a waste of time and then then first thing I see is this post . Thanks for the laugh, I needed it. Very envious of the job, certainly not of the habit. It made me recall form the 80's when flying one fine summer day shortly after my solo flight. I did indeed smoke at the time and remembered the pure satisfaction of that one and only smoke I ever had while flying. Actually, I also do remember a single night flight where the instructor purposely flew me high enough until I experienced
hypoxia. We did not have oxygen, but at the time I was to young to know the stupidity of what was going on and so it was a hoot.

I don't smoke now, and never will again....I finally have that conviction . Hate the smell of cigarettes but still love the smell of pipe and some cigars. Nicotine is the most addictive chemical out there even more so than cocaine, hard to believe isn't it? Now to work on prying that Monkey off my sons back. rolleyes.gif

Kraine,

Could be my translator, but in your show summary it looked like you thought the LED DLP would be crushed by the Sony, but that wasn't the case, and some participants confessed to preferring the DLP image. Obviously we each rank a projectors attributes differently when assessing an image, but how was the consensus split?

Thanks!

Different point of view but your translation is correct, some partcipants to the show prefer the LED DLP.

Back to to the VW500ES this is a really nice option and it's working well, the autocalibration mode :

JFMI: What is the main reason they prefer the LED DLP? And would they also prefer it over the VW1000/1100?

Mike and I were very impressed with the DPI M-Vision Cine 1000 LED projector at Cedia. In fact I think one day we saw the VW600 and the Cine 1000 LED in back to back demos. They are both very good projectors. So the Sony, while outstanding, didn't " crush " the LED DLP we saw either. At least not with 1080p source material, which most folks will be watching for the foreseeable future.

For someone not concerned with 3D, the Cine 1000 LED is a very nice choice. We were very impressed with it.

Yes and no. I knew I'd be envious when the initial enthralled reports started rolling in. And since I ended up spending a bunch more money this year anyway I can spin it in my head like "I may as well have bought the Sony." But then, since I've spent so much time hoping JVC would make some larger jump in black level/contrast performance, I owe it to myself to at least give this year's models a whirl to see how close they get. I may well have wondered about the JVCs just as much, if I bought the Sony. 4K for next year I think.

Just buy one of each and sell the one you like less. I always have a simple solution. Just tell your wife mark recommended you do this. Now its time to unbox my new Lumagen and put it through a few paces. No more posting tonight.

For some reason the translation stops and reverts to French starting at Le Projecteur, using both Firefox and Chrome.

Can someone summarize any comments on black levels compared to JVC?

Noah try this version :

http://www.microsofttranslator.com/bv.aspx?from=&to=en&a=http://www.projection-homecinema.fr/2013/11/16/test-sony-vpl-vw500es-le-futur-de-la-videoprojection-est-la/

JVC still leads the way regarding native contrast but that's the only domain were JVC beats SONY

Only 15400:1 dynamic contrast? Ouch. My old Planar PD8150 was pretty close to that at 12500:1 and that was a DLP projector. Has anyone done an ANSI contrast measurement? I'd be interested in hearing if this gets close to the 700:1 the 1000ES has.

JVCs high end models measure mid zoom 850 lumens 40000:1.

SO...

i was watching a lot of stuff this weekend. Man of Steel 2D, End of Watch (from Digital HD Shaw cable), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on blu ray.

PQ wise, this thing is excellent. Fine detail is far FAR above what the VW95 was capable of. Sharp but natural.

Anyway, my observation is about the auto iris. I never noticed pumping with the VW95 ever, but i did notice it a bit this weekend. It varies by content. During Man of Steel, i saw nothing objectionable. Same with end of watch. Blacks are CRAZY good with lamp on low and iris on Full with brightness at 100. But i noticed the iris pumping a lot during Harry Potter. I think maybe its because the movie is so so dark.

So i'd say that with the iris to limited, the black level is the same as the VW95, which is excellent, because the overall picture is brighter at the same time. With the iris to Full, the pumping may be more visible with some content (lots of dark and bright scenes mixed) but the black level is much better than the VW95.

What are you guys using for your iris setting?
