Still, I'm sometimes upset by color banding in gradients (example a time-lapse sunrise sequence at the beginning of Desierto).
Is that an unavoidable limitation of 8 bit video encoding?
I'm also interested.

You like the RS46 better? Ain't the X500 suppose to be a better projector all around?

Yeah I know. It's just I was never satisfied with the results I got with the other one. I had to sell it because I needed money for another project. I bought the x35 for cheap in replacement, cause I couldn't live without a projector, expecting to have to get used to lower picture quality.
I was really surprised, and I love this one's picture so much that I don't even try tweaking if anymore. I think it's easier to tweak it. Except those gradients I'd like to improve (but thought the same about the x500 in this area).

So I installed the replacement lamp that was sent. It is identical to the first lamp that I received.
The lamp works correctly, contrast is back.
Will see how long the lamp lasts.

It's been 3 years since I picked up my RS46 from Mike over here, but I have 1000 hours on the bulb so I figure it's time to scope out a new bulb.

So where can I buy a LEGIT factory OEM lamp from? When I had Epson's I could order it off their website, but JVC doesn't seem like they have that option

oh, and side note. how many hours have people been getting out of the RS46 bulbs? back when I got it three years ago people were still not sure about them since the RS40 and RS45 had some bulb issues back around 2012-2013 and the RS46 was still too new.... I had expected about 1500 hours before the bulb dimmed too much, but I'm at 967 right now and it's still nearly as bright as the day I got it (just scoping the price of a new bulb)

Mine is reaching 1700 hours (low mode), everything's fine. It can go up to 3000 hours in eco, if I remember correctly.

I'll double check tonight but mine should be well over 2000 hours by now and still works good. You are still good for a while unless it dims.

ok, cool. I just remember when I bought the RS46 three years ago people were still coming from the early failing RS40 and RS45 bulbs that barely netted 800-1200 hours... if I can get 1700 or above on this bulb I'll feel well compensated.

I shouldn't have said anything, because for the first time tonight, my projector had a problem : it powered up ok, had the usual blue screen waiting for an input signal, then when I powered on the blu-ray player, the screen switch to black. The warning and lamp leds were blinking, while the power/standby was red lit.
Had to unplug the unit to power it on again. Everything back to normal after that.
I hope this is not the beginning of a bigger problem, or a swan song for my lamp...

Might be the lamp getting tired. Mine clocked 2060 hours tonight and still going strong. But I expect her to die any minutes. It's already 5 years old (and still looking pretty darn good)!

If your goal is to keep the projector, I would advise you to buy a replacement from the dealer. Otherwise you will probably end up purchasing a knockoff giving you lower performance and dimming more rapidly. This way you can keep on enjoying your projector for a couple years until 4K Laser-Phosphore projectors become affordable!

I was planning to find a genuine bulb, I hope it's still possible. I heard they're getting hard to buy.

By the way, is it safe to buy a lamp for a future replacement, and to not test it right away (warranty wise)? If I just try the bulb to be sure it's working, will it mess with the hour count?

In your case I would be thinking about changing it soon. If it still fails to light, do it.

Hour count has a manual reset, so you could change bulbs everyday and it would not affect the count unless you reset it manually.

Ok thanks for your help. I'm going to test the projector further this week, to see if it fails again. Everything was fine yesterday after having unplugged the unit for a minute. Lamp brightness was the same, no dimming or whatsoever. I hope it was just a bug. Manual says "abnormal circuit operation" for the indicator status I had (standby/on=solid red / and both lamp= orange blinking + warning = red blinking x3).

Happened to me once when I had a slight power surge. Ended up buying an online UPS

probably depends a lot on you and the set up. i had mine firing on a ~110" matte white screen and about a 18ft throw and with around 1300hrs on it, still had the iris clamped down to -10 and thought it looked great. i've since moved, and with only about 1500hrs i'm now wondering if i should pop in the new bulb, at least to see the difference. the new set up is 135" AT screen with about a 18ft throw, and now the iris is completely open.

i've been holding off because i'm hoping when i get paint on the walls, i'll get the 'pop' in the picture back. bare drywall is certainly not the optimal environment for a high contrast projector...

jvc rs46 jumpy choppy image

I purchased a used JVC rs46 and it was working fine for a month. I noticed that there was a slight flicker in the brightness so after searching I thought it was the issue with the bulb filament that needed to be run on high for a while to attempt to correct. After running this for about 30 minutes I started to see the image jumping. no longer just a brightness issue but the image itself jumps up and down.

There was one time that i hit the reset on the picture mode and it went away for a few minutes then came back. Reducing it back to eco mode didnt seem to do any good.

It seems this was only happening when there was a source playing though it. I use a HTPC and I tried a laptop with the same issue. If I have the grid patterns displayed its fine.

Any suggestions please? the only issue I have been able to find is the bulb filament issue but this does not seem related.

Is it possible to get a serviice manual for the rs46 projector? I have a local tech that said he could work on it if he had access to this and that JVC has blocked independent dealers in favor of mendtronics. I am reluctant to ship it to mendronics due to the costs.
