It was easier to calibrate out of the box (I'm not equipped with a Souder), and I had better results overall, more homogeneous in terms of color and grey tones.
I was surprised, I expected to have lower picture quality.

Ok thanks. Good to know. What calibration tools do you recommend?

I used mostly digital video essentials, and Disney Wow, and a bit of Spears and Mundial discs.
These are far from being the best calibration method (because I did with my eyes), but you can achieve something you will be satisfied with. And it's a great start.

Not for the RS46/X35.

JVC does have their free autocal software for the X500, though you have to buy a Spyder meter to use it.

Thanks. How about firmware updates? I heard there was an update to fix 3D crosstalk issues?

Not sure about firmware updates on the RS46/X35. I actually have the RS57 (X700).

I just knew that there was no JVC auto calibration software/ability on the RS46/X35's...

If I need to buy a blu ray player today which one would be best value for the X35?

When playing blu ray discs only, through hdmi, the picture quality is essentially the same amongst blu ray players.

The difference gap widens when you play a DVD disc and the blu player upconverts to a 1080p signal to the X35. In that case I would look at an older used Oppo player for the best 'value'.

Though the blu player doesn't have to do the upconversion. JVC projectors supposedly have a pretty good scaler internally that can handle a 480p DVD signal. I've never compared though.

Ok thanks. I'm thinking should I bother with a Panasonic ub900 or get a 1080p Sony BD. oppo is still quite pricey. I won't be playing back DVD's. Mainly Streaming and BD's.

I've fallen in love with Sony bdp-s790, who has great picture enhancement filters. I guess the Sony bdp-s7200 has the same.

And if you need a good companion for picture enhancement, look for a Dvdo iscan mini

Ok thanks. Is oppo darbee a picture enhancement? Some people don't like darbee and prefer the original oppo?

Note that the X35 won't accept a 4K signal with the Panny, so not sure if that is a great 'value' player considering it's quite expensive.

I have an Oppo 83SE and a separate Darbee unit.

Darbee is a very noticeable picture enhancement for the good. Makes the JVC look a little sharper (or a lot....it's a bit subjective). I would highly recommend it. It had also made my previous Mits HC3800 DLP projector look sharper and my current and past TV. I'm using 1 Darbee unit connected to a single hdmi out on my receiver, then i split the Darbie hdmi out into 2 outs with an active hdmi splitter from monoprice. So I only have to use 1 Darbee feed both my PJ and TV at the same time. Therefore my 1 Darbee is working on all the signals I'm feeding them....blu ray, HD cable, etc.

If you get a Oppo with Darbee internally, you'll only have Darbee coming from that player. But if you only do blu rays and streaming, then maybe the Oppo 103D would be the one for you (I assuming the internal Darbee works on the streaming too). The Oppo 103D's go for about $300-$400'ish on ebay. It can't play UHD 4K discs though....but as mentioned, with a UHS 4K player you'd have to downconvert and send a 1080p signal to the X35 as it won't accept a 4K signal.
