My JVC DLA-X35 arrived today! This is my second projector ever. My first was a 720p Optoma HD72 DLP projector from 2006.

As far as I know, there are currently no high quality photos of the back panel on the web. As a result, the right angle HDMI adapter that I pre-ordered is, naturally, the opposite of what I need.

Bigger is better

As a fellow projector newb who has preordered an RS-46, is there a 'new' projector checklist of things to check after it arrives? For example, convergence.

Ditto. I would also appreciate some advice. This is my first LCOS.

Congrates on your new toy:)

Enjoy!

Thanks. Unfortunately, I might not have time to fire it up until next week.

I have a 6 year old Chief RPA ceiling mount that I used for my Optoma (a fairly small and lightweight DLP). I really like this low profile mount because of my low ceiling.

These are the parts:

These small Chief extenders need to be used for the mount to reach the JVC's holes. This is the connection that worries me:

Should I be concerned about the mount's strength to hold the JVC?

Alternatively, there's a $100+ mounting plate (SLB281) for JVC projectors but I don't think I need it?

For convergence checking w/o tool, I put on 007 Casino Royale BR with Bond on the Beach scene (nice and bright), then look at either the upper or lower left, where the black bar and the actual movie content line/edge for any colors, other than black or blue (sky or water color). Any extra colors indicate convergence issue.

My understanding that new JVC or Sony should NOT have this issue.

Have fun w/ your new toy.

You need the SLB281 plate. Give me a call and I can add it to your preorder. Also I did not see a drop tube. You need that to connect the ceiling plate and mount together. A pipe nipple also works.

Thanks for your response, Mike, but I may end up using my original mount.

Because after doing a bit of searching, I found Ralph Potts' post detailing his success with the same mount on his JVC, linked here:

I haven't ceiling mounted it yet so I have it on a table, level with the bottom edge of the screen, projecting from 10 feet onto a 100" SeymourAV (minimum throw). Here are my initial impressions;

Quiet. This projector is very very quiet. It's much quieter than my Optoma was. If I select the 3D mode, only then would it get as loud as my Optoma. Quieter than my PS3. High lamp mode is similar to my PS3 when the PS3 starts to run hot and its fan revs up; and only slightly louder than the Optoma when in this mode. Excellent as far as I'm concerned.

IR remote works effectively when I point it at the screen. Better than my Optoma.

It's also nice and bright enough on low lamp mode, even with moderate room lighting (side pot lights on full, and wall sconces at half power).

After applying vertical and a tiny bit of horizontal lens shift, I checked focus uniformity using a 1-pixel test pattern, courtesy of sarangiman. No problems, edge to edge, corner to corner. Excellent.

Other than checking focus, I haven't checked convergence or anything else. I havent touched ANY settings. Basically, i just put it in Cinema mode for now so I can enjoy a movie this evening. Going to initiate it with The Dark Knight Rises. It should be a good premiere movie, I'm thinking.

How is sharpness, brightness compared to your DLP? How many hours was on the Optoma lamp?

What is your aperture setting on?

You are right Dark Knight will make your 46 shine:)

I had about 900 hours on the Optoma bulb. With the JVC still on low lamp mode, the JVC brightness was definitely better, and more importantly, brighter while still maintaining good contrast and colour accuracy. Definitely better brightness with room lighting on.

I didn't do any pixel-level A-B testing between the (720p) Optoma and JVC, but sharpness at 1.5X seating distance was plenty sharp for me (at least equal to the DLP).

Watching TDKR with the lights off, I started the movie with the aperture at 0. Ended up settling on -10 which felt quite comfortable for viewing. I watched it on low lamp mode, but would probably open up the iris for ambient lighting.

To sum up, I felt like I was watching a 100" version of my Kuro.

wow, 100 inch kuro!

I wonder if you checked out the 3d?

is it bright enough?

also, i wonder if the fan noise in high lamp setting is too loud.

if everything works out fine, I'm seriously considering it too.

I do not have the 3D emitter or glasses yet. They are on the way. So I can't say if it's bright enough yet. But even when I get it, I will only have one 3D Blu-ray to view: Prometheus.

The fan noise in high lamp was slightly louder than my Optoma HD72. If I were to guess, I would put it in the high 20s db. With the projector directly above my head, I don't think it would bother me.

How accurate is the color on the X35? Does not having CMS mean that we won't be able to get accurate color?

First off, you need to understand who I am: I have no calibration equipment, I have never had my projector (or Kuro) calibrated in the past, and I probably won't. My experience is purely that of an untrained noobish eye. To put that into perspective, I am the kind of person who bought a Kuro instead of a Kuro Elite.

Having said that, right out of the box, by simply setting it to Cinema mode and adjusting the lens aperture to -10, at no point during TDKR did I feel the colour was off. If I were to adjust any other settings, I'm sure it can be even better, but at this point, I haven't a clue of what to try first. For me, not having CMS is ok for the $1200+ that I saved vs the RS48. But I know for purists and more experienced users, CMS would be a necessary feature. So what I'm saying is that the colour was enjoyable ... this is purely subjective. For a more objective review, I would wait for the true reviewers (e.g. Zombie10k) to share their opinions.

But if anyone would care to share any tips or calibration settings, then I would be happy to report the differences to the forum. Thanks for looking.

Yes, they are definitely not included in the box. I'm not sure when my glasses and emitter will ship.

Wow...that is high praise for this unit so far! I am also a kuro owner and hoping that I won't be disappointed in going from an elite plasma to a 100 inch screen with the x35 or x55.

Huge difference indeed! You can read all the specs you want, but once you get it in front of you, and try lifting it, only then do you realize the size you're dealing with. As a result, I will need to re-evaluate my ceiling mounting construction. I was going to use a 9"x18" piece of 3/4" ply on top of 5/8" ceiling drywall, directly connected to 2 floor joists at each end of the ply. But now ... I may cut out some of the ceiling drywall so I can fit a 2"x8" cross beam between the joists. Then I can have a central point of attachment for the plywood and Chief mount.

Unfortunately, I don't have that movie and will have to ask around for it.

Much easier to just place two layers of 3/4" plywood on the ceiling. Place some trim around the plywood to make it a nice raised panel. Two layers of 3/4" will hold up way more that you need.
