Hi!

The purpose of this Poll is to see just how much of a problem there is with the new 5020/6020 Projectors, and to get that information to Epson. Please, please fill out the poll even if you have a perfect PJ, or even if you returned your 5020/6020. It is very important to hear from satisfied owners as well as those who gave up.

If you're not sure how your PJ is, I'll post some test patterns here shortly that you can use to check.

CA = Chromatic aberation.

If you're unsure, post up your question and we'll try and sort it out.

I will be contacting Epson with the results from this poll in an attempt to make sure we can get good copies of these projectors. Or, if enough people respond positively we'll know that some of us are just unlucky. (I've been through three bad ones in a row.)

Please check all answers that apply to you.

OOPS! Under the 5020 section, it asks if you've returned your 6020. My mistake. 5020 owners go ahead and assume it says "5020". It won't let me change it.

Thanks!!!

Here's some pics to check convergence with:

I just got my screen setup this yesterday afternoon and I watched a couple of movies. The picture looks great but I'll respond to the poll after checking out my 6020 thoroughly sometime over the next couple of days. I still haven't tried any 3D movies - that will be done latter today.

You need to call Visual Apex about their return policy.

Visual Apex has a liberal return policy and outstanding customer service. Just check the website to see exactly what the policy is... Also, Epson has been great to work with so far. They are hand picking me a good one--brand new, not refurb-- today, at least that's what they say. I'll post back with how that works out. I'm going to be citing the results of this poll to them to try and streamline the exchange procedure for those that have gotten multiple bad units.

Also, do look at all the poll results. We are getting a number of people that had no problems with their 5020/6020. Just not as high as we would like to see.

I called Visual Apex & they said I can return it no questions asked if done within 4 hours. Also I can return for refund within 30 days if unit is defective. I do not plan to RMA for replacement & return the unit if it has convergence issues. Might just have to go with Panny plasma. Hope not!

Ok folks, got the new projector & I don't think I have a convergence issue. Can the experts here please check....

I just got back from work & quickly took some pics, but can take better closeups if needed.

Thanks!

If all the corners look like the pic with the text, looks pretty good. How well do the 3 colors focus? The lines with the red, green and blue lines, are all 3 colors reasonably equally focused around the screen? If not, check that area for white field uniformity. If a 100 IRE field looks equally white all around the screen, focus uniformity is probably close enough that you won't see any issues at all from seating distance. If red is out of focus in one area, check that area for a pinkish hue with a white field.

Try turning the dynamic iris off......I noticed having it on can produce a slight pink/red hue in a white picture. It's been reported with that problem in some reviews........give it a shot smile.gif.

If it doesnt work....give Epson a call.

@Kirnak. Nice thread.

Just got my 9100W (6020) today. Now comes the hard work of testing it during the weekend. smile.gif
I'll post results and respond poll answers later on. Lets see how lucky I am...

Side request (maybe not much relevant for this thread...)
Can someone post THX setting modes and/or best post calibration settings for 2D and 3D that you're using.
Reliable post calibration setting available in the web are based on THX modes, which are not available in EU version of this PJ.

I know setting vary from PJ to PJ, but it would help to have these when lacking calibration tools (specially for 3D modes)

Seasons greetings!

Convergence looks excellent. I wish mine was as good as yours.

Blue looks to be slightly shifted down. But it can be easily fixed with the LCD alignment option with probably very little adjustment.

Just got my 5020ube replacement from Epson... yikes, this is before doing any LCD adjustment:

After doing the LCD align, red is still off by quite a bit... looks like a total dud.

I'd have to see convergence patterns, but what you have there looks to me to be CA, not convergence. How much lens shift are you using? Using a uniform white field, does the field look white, or do you have pinkish areas? Is your lens zoom completely at one extreme or the other, or is your zoom backed off a bit from either extreme?

Checked white field and def noticed pink hue on left side of screen... I'm not shifting very much, maybe halfway from dead center to max.

Oddly enough, as I was typing a reply, I received another projector delivery. I had ordered a 5020ub since I didn't need the wireless.

So here are 3 pictures... all with no LCD alignment fix:

1st (original 5020ube), not great

2nd (epson replacement 5020ube), worse!

3rd (new order of a 5020ub), close to dead on as you'll get from EPSON I'm guessing

So hey, it only took 3 projectors to get it right. amazing.

That last one looks pretty darn good! My best one out of 3 is worse, a lot worse, than your worst pic there. I will say Epson has been great about it though. They've really tried to make me happy and have another one on the way. Won't get here till after Christmas, but that's not their fault.

Your last one there, how is the white field uniformity?

Sounds like a keeper! You could try playing with the focus to get rid of the little bit of pink. So far, with my 3, it's been my experience that the pinkish areas are due to the red pixels being out of focus in the pinkish area. Maybe let us know how that works out if you try it?

Auto iris is shut off. I was not planning to RMA the unit if it came in with issues but return it. This is my first projector & I am not sure how bad the hue problem is during daily long term use but I am wondering if the 5010 did not have any of these issue why does the 5020 have it or it did & I am not aware of it? Does Epson need to work out the kinks of the new model in production or enforce better QA?

On the sides of the screens convergence is not as good as the one I have posted. Check out the newer picks below.

Its actually projected on a wall but today I projected it on a old screen & have the same hue. The projects is causing it, does the Panasonic have these issues?

Depending on how severe the issue, it can be completely un-noticeable from seated distance. Getting right down to the pixel level, 3 chip LCDs are always going to have some issues compared to other technologies. That does not necessarily mean LCD is bad. If it makes no difference when you're watching, it's only an academic point. However, when the issues are so bad that they translate into easily seen problems from viewing distance, that is bad. I've had a number of past generation Epsons, and they have all been just fine. No Convergence, CA, white field uniformity or focus issues. With my 3 5020s, each has been worse than the worst pics on this thread. That's the purpose of this thread, to verify QC issues, and to make sure Epson takes care of owners who choose to stick with Epson. And hopefully to improve their QC.

If you decide to give up on Epson, I'd recommend talking to Mike here at AVS about a Sony HW50. When you consider the extra lamp and extended warranty, the price is almost a wash with the Epson 5020. Bear in mind the Sony has issues as well, but they seem to be less common than with today's Epsons.

Been looking around & Epson does have the brightest images of the bunch. Do you think the flaws in my unit warrant a return Kirnak? I am thinking to return it & just get Panasonic plasma for now & wait till Epson works out the kinks on 5020UB. What makes it worst is this was a gift for my Dad.

If it were me... Your convergence, at least from the pics, looks good enough I don't think you're going to see any problems from viewing distance. The white field uniformity though, if it looks that pink in person, and it's not just amplified by the camera, I wouldn't want that. Snowy fields are going to look pink on the left side. That's the worst white field problem I've seen. You could play with the focus and try and make it go away. Put the red-green-blue lines pattern up and try and focus the red pixels. Then look at the white field. If that doesn't fix it I'd return or exchange it.
