Installed new 50ES and used disk to set it up. There's one test scene for Pirates of the Caribbean that looks terrible. I want to make sure it's not something in my system (i.e. HDMI cable, Onkyo receiver, Oppo DVD)

Just wondering if others have seen this?

thx, joe

No that is just the scene itself...it is very grainy and almost looks like DVD quality!

To the OP, was it the WOW DVD or the WOW Blu-ray disk you were using?

Part of it is noise in the film...it is a dark scene...part of it is that you may have sharpness set to high. In general, Sharpness on most HDTV Panels should really never be above 15% of the full range. I have my set at 11 on a 100 point scale.

Also, you black level & backlight levels may not be set properly. If you are seeing that much noise, you may be have the black levels set too high ...

On my calibrated Pioneer ... that scene does not look like DVD quality ... but it does not look like Sweeney Todd either..! smile.gif

The disc is reference quality and contains professional patterns for calibration that meet industry reference standards.

"looks terrible" doesn't tell us much.
The Disney WOW test DVD is NOT a professional piece of gear.
It will get you in the ball park subject to finer adjustments of your own.
Your listed equipment should get you some very fine quality picture results with excellent quality DVDs and especially Blu Rays.

That is a broad and misleading statement.

The patters on Disney WOW meet all professional standards. They are professional in every respect.

However, no calibration disc made will give you the same result as a very experienced ISF Professional using $20,000 worth of Calibration equipment.

Professional critics have given Disney WOW top reviews for its performance and accuracy.

If you are not using a meter or software to calibrate, you cannot get much better results than you can using a good calibration disc such as this.
