I have had my W20000 for about 4 years now, it has just over 1000 hrs on the original bulb and is a integral part of my dedicated home theater. I only use it for movies in a controlled light environment.

That being said, for the last 6 months or so, all of a sudden the image will sku and I will get various levels of banding across the image. Usually turning it on and off remedies the situation. It's like a small strip down the middle is taken out and a different strip is added somewhere else. I have determined that it is the projector and am faced with a dilemma.

I was going to contact Benq and send it in for repair, but given that it is getting close to its bulb life along with the cost of the repair, I am wondering if I should upgrade and if so, what would be the best projector to suit my needs... Obviously I would something that is an improvement on the W20000 but am limited in my requirements. They are as follows

1080
Single HDMI input
3D would be a nice add on ( I don't have it now but....)
My max screen size is 110 inch 16:9
Lens shift
Ceiling mount
Calibratable

I am thinking of going to a JVC either the DLA-X55R or the JVC Pro DLA-RS56 Projector any input at all would be appreciated

Interested in input or thoughts....

The only thing I'd be cautious of is moving from a DLP to LCOS without demoing a JVC first. LCOS looks a lot different than DLP does and not everyone likes it. I know that I'm a huge fan of DLP over JVCs LCOS technology. There's just something about the way they handle motion that bothers me.

Another option would be a Sony VPL-VW95ES. A great performing projector. Its LCOS but Sony has recently reworked their LCOS panels so they're much better with motion. I got to demo a Sony VPL-HW50ES over the weekend for about 5 hours and I can tell you motion is much better compared to what I've seen on three JVC units that I used to own.

But you may end up enjoying what JVC has to offer. I just like to make sure people who are making the shift from DLP to a JVC know what they're in for. Just make sure you demo it for at least an hour so you know what you're buying and that you like it.

Appreciate the input, will demo first if buying a jvc for sure! Are all jvc the same or does buying a higher ranked unit going to make a difference?

The lowest-end JVC RS-46 (x35) does not have e-shift 2 or a full CMS to fully calibrate with. There are variances in the different models that do contribute to a better projector experience. The best models reviewed by Zombie are said to be the RS-55 from last year's batch, because he still likes E-Shift 1 over the newer E-shift 2.

That said, I'm sure E-Shift 2 is pretty good and the Rs48/RS-4810 I believe is the lowest priced JVC that has both the CMS and E-shift 2 I believe.
Always a good idea to demo first, but you may have trouble finding certain DLP demos depending where you live.

They are all very similar. As you move up the native contrast goes up. The higher end ones are THX certified, have a CMS for calibration and come with "e-shift". That's about all you get when moving up. They all use the same lens, LCOS chips, chassis, bulb, 3D emitter, ect. The main difference is really contrast and software as you move up. Check their website out. They explain what e-shift is and what you get as you move up in price.

Great I will give them website a further look, I was unsuccessful in finding detailed differences previously. I am presently fighting with the status of the W20000' on another forum it was suggested that it might be just as wise to have it repaired as for around 1000 plus a bulb, it would be as good as any 3000 upgrade due to the fact that the W20000 is a very advanced projector. The only improvement would be the blacks and of course 3D which at this point means nothing to me. So, I guess the question still stands just have to be sure which JVC assuming the W20000 is retired.

That being said, the 55 I can get for 66% of the price of the Pro46 from JVC.

The Benq has been running smoothly for the last 8 hours of viewing, go figure! I am down to the X55 or the Pro 56 there is about 30% difference in price and am trying to decide between the Pro series or Consumer series.

If you have the money, I'd go with the RS56 as it offers a few upgrades over the X55. The differences are posted on their webiste and are listed as:
Quote:
The DLA-X95R, DLA-X75R, DLA-RS66 and DLA-RS56 feature e-shift2, upgraded light engine, full color management, ISF certification and advanced calibration functionality. In addition, they are designed to pass the 400-plus tests necessary to achieve THX® 3D Certification (pending) – a promise to consumers of the highest level of quality and performance. All JVC THX Certified Projectors include THX 2D and 3D Cinema viewing modes to provide the most accurate color reproduction available in a pre-calibrated setting, ensuring content is rendered back just as its creator intended.
The DLA-X55R, DLA-RS48 and DLA-RS4810 bring e-shift2 to a new price point and feature JVC’s Color Management System, five lens memory presets and a native contrast ratio of 50,000:1. The DLA-RS4810 adds a three year warranty.
