This is probably not too interesting to some, but I've re-designed the Projector Calculator, and after a lot of hard work, I thought I'd post my progress. The "it's ALIVE" thread will be later. As I had noted in my other thread about my new project (Sim Theater), I am first finalizing the pre-cursor version of the Web Calculator first.

GUI has been substantially improved and cleaned up.
3D Lumens Mode now gets a dedicated box
Convergence Grading System has been added. 6 large simulated pixels on the screen allows you to set how your projector's convergence looks, then it will give you a grade.
Clearance Seating Calculator to allow you to see a ruler of every X feet back from the screen, how high the projector's beam clears your objects like seating in the room.
Filters have been added so you can show projectors "Only with 3D" or "Only above 1000+ Lumens Best Mode", or ONLY DLP only LCD, etc..
Calculator will be renamed to WebProjectorCalculator.com and all products will fall under the name "SimTheater.com".

---Bunches of other changes I will list upon release---

Here is a screenshots of the progress:

Here is a picture of the old version (yuck compared to the new one ABOVE IMHO):

Thanks, looks great! I'd only request humbly, can you make lens shift part of the settings? I had to use my tape measure and a bookshelf to validate my settings for my BenQ w1070 work align properly to my screen

Lens shift is there, though no horizontal lens shift calculations. You can change the lens shift yourself under the Advanced Options tab. It was there in the previous version as well, though it was a bit buggy.

I'm working on testing the new lens shift now, there will be a minor update (0.26) after this one to iron any bugs out I find. I quit developing the calculator about a year or so ago, guess I just wasn't sure what to do with it. Lately I'm re-motivated to get this going again, and to make it better. One thing for sure, this new version is MUCH MUCH less ugly and more pleasing to the eye. It is a huge improvement in usability and aesthetics. The next 2 updates are focused on resolving lens shift issues, that is why I've locked this version to working ONLY in Firefox. My previous mistake was I tried to make lens shift work in 6 browsers at once, and by doing so I messed it up (though it worked better for some PJ's than others). The new lens shift will be greatly improved and keep being improved until v.026 in which I expect all L-Shift bugs to be gone (hopefully).

I'm going to update the thread now and then (sort of out boredom as the forum is a little slow right now)...

1) Thus far I am not getting the same lens shift bugs I have in v022 (currently the live version @eliteprojectorcalculator.com), meaning --- so far so good as the re-design of lens shift is working as expected (though more testing needed).

2) I am now coding the dynamic screen resizer, which unlike the previous version of the calculator, it now resizes the screen itself and not just the screen markers (took me a while to figure this one out because the 2D side-perspective is not friendly to this technique). This feature makes the calculator a lot funner to use IMO.

3) I finally have a GUI that I can live with, I am very happy with the looks of the new UI. It is very professional looking now and it looks RELEASE worthy. I feel like I really accomplished something great with the new UI design (not gloating, just patting), because this FORM was absolute craziness to design in a browser. This was by far in the top 5 of the most complex forms I've ever designed in 20+ years of programming.

4) I'm taking the final version of Beta 025 or 026 to all the review sites, MFR's, and dealers and am going to try to get some deals done. I would love to get some small revenue sources so I can contribute to buying more 3D models for my next project (Sim Theater).

Anyways, just my blurb, I'll post some more screenshots of the application in the next few days, including the seating calculator (finishing that one up still).

Very cool, would it be ok if I linked to this in my book? I'm always looking for excellent projects and resources to share. Thanks!

Not only would it be cool, but it would be much appreciated. You can have a free "advanced license" for doing so, thanks. Just remind me after I release it to assign you a dealer profile.
Remember the new calculator will soon be at www.WEBPROJECTORCALCULATOR.com rather than eliteprojectorcalculator.com (though the old site will redirect automatically).

My favorite feature request is very simple, but makes this powerful tool usable for a lot of people in Europe: Support the metric system, please!

FYI:

BETA V.230 (same UI as v.25)

1) Major UI re-design. The new UI is much more pleasing to the eye (see screenshots at top of thread), and has better useability.

2) Metric System Added, you can now choose to show the values in Meters/CM as well as Feet/IN.

3) Screen Resize Code is done. The Screen IMAGE now RESIZES dynamically as you change your screen size, given a decently accurate depiction of the real screen size in a room given a ceiling height that you set. The screen is purposefully distorted slightly aspect wise to take less room on the form, but the screen markers now grow with the screen and vice versa.

4) Not only does the screen itself re-scale properly, but so does everything else on the form in real-time.

5) 10+ Filters to choose from (LCD Only, DLP Only, LCOS Only, 2013 Models, 2012 Models, 2011 Models, etc.. etc...)...

6) 30+ New Projectors Added (Newer JVC's and Sony's, a lot more lower end PJ's, as well as many Runco / Marantz / Planar). The reason I did not add too many projectors yet in the old version, is due to a re-design the old version cannot read the data from the new version. So I'd have enter them twice (no thanks), that's why I'm releasing v.23 before v.25

7) Lens Shift is working better in this release

8) The Top Screen Marker now shows the distance to ceiling instead of to flloor. The Center and Bottom screen markers still show distance to floor.

9) 3D Lumens now has a dedicated box

10) Dealers, Installers, or ANY Commercial Use are NOW Required to Email (Sales@SimTheater.com) for a proper license. Non-Commercial Use is still free.
The price is inexpensive.

BETA V.240 to V.25 (est 2-3 weeks)
1) The Seating and Convergence Calculator is to be released.
2) Reporting Released
3) 50 to 100 More Projectors Added, Business Models will start to be added
4) MFR Licenses, Reviewer Site Licenses, Dealer, and Enthusiast licenses will be available. (90% of the features in the calculator are still free for non-commercial use)...

More Changes to be Documented later...

Note to Self (additional quickie changes for v.230):

1) Show minimum and maximum screen size at a given throw as they change the zoom/throw slider, put this inside the Left Window instead of just on the slider bar (makes it easier to understand for newer users)
--Adding more stuff as I think of it...

Another preview screenshot shown below for BETA 023 release.

A few more really helpful last minute additions I made are also below (another reason the release is delayed a few more days).

1) Back Clearance and Projector Exhaust location is now shown in a Details tab, and this data is to be entered for every projector (phew)
2) We can see from the screenshot below that changing the screen size, ACTUALLY changes the screen size and not just the markers smile.gif
3) The JVC projectors now show both Dealer and Std Model #'s in the menu, hence RS-66 = RS-66 (x95)
4) The calculator functions pretty much exactly like a Windows application, there are NO postbacks other than a couple AJAX things for the stats. The HT projectors are pre-loaded from a proprietary pre-loading method of SQL generated and delimited data, meaning the user experience is unmatched and you can fly through the different models with no postbacks.

I'm trying to finish the filtering and get all the latest 3D lumen data entered, as well as the depth requirement data.

I will post a new thread once it's ready.

Edited:
Well I also still have to add the new projectors as well. We'll see, it's much easier for me to add projectors now then before, because I templated it, though it's still a lot of work looking through manuals.

There was an unanticipated complication of the metric conversions / bug I found, but I am getting there. Also had a really difficult month at work, so had to delay a bit more, but I'm doing my best.
Shouldn't be too much longer I hope, if it drags on too much I'll release what I have and then do another update later.

I haven't given up on this project, but my job has been keeping me too busy lately. Been traveling all over, been hard to code. I stopped in a bad coding spot and need to restart. Hopefully very soon then I'll just release it, I'm just as anxious (well more anxious) than the people waiting on it.

Thanks guys, the Beta will soon be released to Zombie and Mike @ AVS, as those are the first two people I want input from, but a few more things on the list. I installed a virus accidentally and decided to just re-do my home dev machine, kind of been sitting there for a while.

Not much anyone can do really at the moment, but thanks for asking. I am going to open the code back up this upcoming week for the final push (had to cook some motivation back up).

Well it was NO FUN to have put this app. off for so long, but I am releasing it finally. As noted above I said 6-12 months, so end of this month to beginning of next year is the release date. I feel like I made vapor ware, and that was a bad feeling, so I told myself, just get the darn thing finished already.

Entering all those projectors turned out to be more tedious than I had hoped, so I had to make a change to the FREE licensing. Basically, all sub-$2k MSRP projectors are free to use in the calculator, otherwise a small fee but this licensing is experimental, I may just go with advertising or something (depends).

I would have loved to do this for free, I tried, but it took too much time. Maintaining all those specs is too time consuming. If someone knows a faster way I can easily screen scrape them from somewhere (without stealing data of course), then I might be able to change the licensing a bit.

I am releasing it this time, you can hold me to it.

Just some touch up work and NOW finally sending Mike @ AVS and Zombie a copy for testing, I'll start a new thread once ready. This application is nothing like the original (it is order of magnitudes more advanced and cleaner and more bug free).

I cannot believe how hard this ended up being, 5000 lines of floating point code in Javascript, not to mention all the formatting nightmares. I easily have 1000 hours of labor into this thing unfortunately.

This will be the Beta 0.24 RELEASE...

Hopefully by THIS upcoming weekend is my plan. All the guts are done, now it is just deployment and some security / auth stuff.

It does everything now though, here is a list of features ALREADY coded in the calculator:
Screen re-sizes dynamically with inter-dimensional ceiling heights as you move the sliders (scaled accurately to ceiling height)
Lens Memory for 2.35 added for Lens Shift Calculations - Now supports all Aspects accurately 2.35 thru 2.40, 16:9, 4:3, and 16:10
Lens shift completely re-coded and hard measurements are now shown on the left (irregardless of any pixel math issues in a browser)
Metric Systems Conversion now tested to be working
Convergence Grading System added (gives your projector's convergence a HARD SCORE, more of an experimental thing for now)
New projectors added for 2013 and 2014 (all JVC's and Sony's among others)
User Authentication Supported for keeping notes on measurements and other similar tasks

Lamp Tracking module UNDER DEVELOPMENT to record measurements of users and compare your LUMENS loss to others
Seating Calculator still UNDER DEVELOPMENT for Beta v.025 Release

Since I was finally back to my calculator, I investigated why the F-Stop differences do not match what people measure from closest throw to farthest throw. I was considering adding F-Stop calcs to the throw slider, but decided against it for now (pending more research later). I still may add it later, but I have to do some error averaging to find out if it is do-able or not at all.

This is based on the formula:
value = (fstop1/fstop2)
result = Math.abs(Math.log(value*value)/Math.log(2))

This is what I found in my online research:

1) Movie studios use a different number because of lens coating and other factors, they use a T-Stop (not sure how accurate this is).
2) A projector works the opposite of a camera (camera takes in light, projectors let out light), and these numbers are even imperfect for a camera, so for projectors it is more complicated.
3) The coatings, and lens-shift refractive factor due to angle variations on light paths as compared to the exit of light on the aperture on projectors distort the number
4) The F-Stop numbers provided for HT projectors (not sure about Biz units) are often provided incorrectly by the manufacturer because almost no-one pays attention to them, they are usually rounded or sometimes worse just "float-dropped". Now this doesn't sound like a lot of difference but consider that if the real number was 2.59 to 2.8 and the MFR dropped the 9 instead of rounding, that's a BIG difference.
5) The measurements provided by people are inaccurate (sometimes it might be the measurer's fault and not the F-Stop fault).
