I find Red to be very very self promotional and its business has been selling 4K and higher digital movie cameras. Its in its best interest to promote shooting in 4K and distributing source material in 4K.
In December it announced a 4K server for $1450 and its partnership with a start up content distributor for the service with pay per title internet distribution. The content would be material shot with Red cameras mostly by small independents desperate for distribution and income. Many hoped they would land some big Hollywood studios too. Six months later there is nothing except a $300 price increase for new orders of the server. The distribution company appears to be showing some signs of life after months of silence. But its still very quiet.
Over two years ago Red announced a 4K laser lit projector expected to sell direct for under $10K. Really excited a whole bunch of consumers here who thought they could pound sand with the big boys with their craft beer budgets. On Red's forum Sony was made fun of because it was selling its 1000ES bulb lit for $25K MSRP. The Red projector has now been put on a back burner because a laser 4K projector isn't possible even cutting out middlemen at any near $10K. Regulatory issues too. Plus their software color science genius needs to spend his time on more important other stuff. Whatever. It ain't coming any time soon. Coming soon means for Red based on the server initial orders at least a wait of 6 months. Its now almost June and initial pre orders started in December. For the projector, they aren't even saying its coming, just that it has been put on the back burner which I read as its at least several more years. But people keep asking questions about what kind of screen they should install for it now. Others feel someday after Red conquers the projection market, they will manufacture screens as well and that consumers should wait for its perfect screen.
I have concluded that they are a camera company serving the commercial film making industry and not a consumer HT company. I do expect the Redray player to start shipping soon since it has been delayed six months and the delays seem to be for software improvements..
