After going through the whole process of replacing my dead Benq W9000 with the JVC DLA-X35, and seeing the whole discussion on DLP vs the X35 in my earlier thread, I'm curious which DLP projectors all the DLP guys were talking about.

After the W9000 bit the dust I tried the Benq W1070 and was not impressed. Reviews were great but it seemed almost a toy compared to the W9000.

So...........what are good DLP projectors now and are there any under $5000?

Thanks,
BH

There really aren't a lot unfortunately. There's a bunch of cheap ones out there, and there's still the high end (Sim2, etc) but there's not a lot of interest from DLP manufacturers in the upper midrange.

That said, there's the Runco LS series, formerly sold as Planar 8130/8150 (until Planar rolled their HT projectors all under their Runco brand). Under $5k for a good DLP you'll probably have to look for one-off deals.

See what an anamorphoscopic lens can do, see movies the way they were meant to be seen

Not that i want to keep "carping" on it, as i have mentioned it before, but you should check out the classified area at AVS for display devices and do a search for "Digital Projection LED"; Someone has listed a top-of-the-line LED projector (brand-new ~ box opened for picture purposes, as claimed) for only $4,500.00 or best offer, which is an amazing deal if true. There are plenty of online reviews on it as well as on its "clones", the Vivitek and Runco LED projectors.
Needless to point out that if interested you should do your own due diligence before proceeding with purchase...

Optoma HD86 or HD87 or Infocus Sp8602 or if 3D Sharp Z30000

If your room will take it I would buy the 8150 from the classified from seegs smile.gif

I'm curious as to what exactly happened when your W9000 "bit the dust"?

I've just experienced my third fault with a BenQ W7000 (see http://www.avsforum.com/t/1481883/benq-w7000-the-uhp-lamp-inside-and-how-to-change-it), so I'm interested in projector faults and how often they occur.

I was watching a movie and the W9000 suddenly made a popping noise and then what sounded like a loud bad fan noise. The picture when from color to brown and white.

I sent the projector to a repair shop in NYC and they said it needed a color wheel, lamp ballast and motherboard and quote $700 to repair. I spoke with Benq tech directly and they said it was likely that was what it would cost to repair. I had the NYC shop send the projector back to me.

Further investigation make me think the NYC shop evaluation is wrong. I now think it's just the color wheel due to symptoms and have ordered one to try and put in myself (unless I can find someone willing to do it for me). I've opened up the projector and held the color wheel in place while on. All grinding noise went away. There is still an image on the screen so I don't see why the lamp ballast would be bad. And since there is an image I think there is a good chance the MB is fine. Everything I see wrong seems like it could be coming from the color wheel.

Most likely, all you need to replace is the color wheel.

you can get these for a relatively fair price

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-color-wheel-BenQ-W9000-projector-color-wheel-8-segments-5x-speed-/271177115648

I would pick it up and swap it in. It shouldn't be too hard to find a service manual that will describe the removal / replacement procedure for the color wheel and any necessary SM adjustments.

There are a couple sources on Ebay..........mine is coming from the other company......also in China. Should be here in a week or two.

Any suggestions on finding a service manual? I've searched online with no success. My last recourse was to call Benq later today and ask if they would email or fax me something. That's why I was sort of hoping someone would step up and say they would do this for a fee.

Thanks,
BH

I don't think BQ will release the SM but it's worth a try.

otherwise, I would just spend the $12.99 and buy it from this site:

This knowledge on this forum is amazing. Right after getting a reply from Benq that they will not release the service manual up pops your post with a link to purchase it for a very reasonable fee.

Thanks!!!

You'll have to let me (us) know how useful that service manual is, I've got a BenQ W5000 that has some power off/on issues, might be worth grabbing it's service manual and taking a look.

See what an anamorphoscopic lens can do, see movies the way they were meant to be seen
