Merry Christmas everyone. I hope UPS got you your JVC yesterday if you were expecting it. Otherwise you'll have a bonus present tomorrow or Friday.

Blu-ray 4K will not be announced at CES. I'd say there is only a small change it will be announced at CEDIA next year. What HDCP will be required is unknown at the moment. Honestly, if Sony has anything to do with it, it will probably be something even higher than HDCP 2.2 given their track record (I kid of course, okay maybe not). There is still way too much in the air about what Blu-ray 4K will or won't be to even guess at what the requirements are. I'd even go so far as to say that the new Sony projectors won't support everything it brings to the table. We have no clue as to what the final color space will be. This is one of the main reasons I'm so hesitant to buy any projector right now, native 4K or not. The Sony has a better chance of meeting most of what the format has to offer, no doubt, but that doesn't mean it can achieve the other specs such as color gamut. Everything is a big gamble right now and given how Sony handled the 1000ES out of the gate and 4K in general, I'm even more reluctant to tell anyone that any projector should fit the bill for the foreseeable future with anything more than what is commercially available now for playback software. So in that respect, the Sony has the leg up with the Sony 4K puck server and Sony's own movie catalog. JVC can do upscaled content from various Blu-ray players or native 4K from the Red Ray player and the other one (don't remember the other one right off the top of my head). All of these seem to be showing 4K with Blu-ray like specs but higher native resolution. So basically a stop gap until something else comes down the pipe.

I feel that we will be watching Blu Rays for quite a few years to come anyway. Even if 4K Blu Rays started to ship in 2015, it could be at least 3 more years after that before a meaningful number of titles were available to buy / rent / watch. Hell, I'm still waiting for certain movies to be re-mastered and be released on Blu Ray. You could buy a projector now and be ready to upgrade / replace it by the time 4K UHD Blu Rays are really ready for prime time.

I agree, but there are some implementations that work wonderfully with real content. Sony, Runco/Planar, and Sim2 have done their homework and have 100%-of-the-the time usable DIs. There arent many other projectors that can make that claim. There are units here and there, ie Sharp xv-z30000, that work good but as a whole any projector from the companies aforementioned will definitely have phenomenal DI performance.

I'm quite pleased with the DI on my Lumis. And I could not see any issues at Cedia with the JVC's. A good DI can make for a great picture. smile.gif

I agree the DI performance for the JVC's at CEDIA was good from what I saw (if you believe they were on and yada, yada, yada). They had a lot of great mixed material and fades so I think it would have been easy to tell if it was really bad. I'm supposed to get one at any point so I'll know more soon. I am also hoping to get a 600ES at some point (fingers crossed). I think a comparison would be sublime.

Does anyone happen to know if the Panamorph mounting plate AK8J-3D used with older models (RS-1, HD1, RS-2, HD100, RS10/15/20/25/35, HD350/750/550/950/990) will fit the RS57?

It can do nothing but improve the performance if they did.

Since that plate fits the 40/50 and 60, it should also work with the 57 since that projector should use the same body.

Great! Did I just miss the end of the pre-order? I've been away from AVS for a while and it's probably time to upgrade the RS20.

It would be even better to have a 57 or 67 at the same time as a 600es

That is what I'm working to do. Tom is reviewing the 600ES but I am hoping to get some time with it while I have the JVC as well.

So the best dynamic iris would be one that mimics the human eye?

in reverse mode.....Human iris opens when a dark scene is encounted....a DI should close...

Sublime. Sublime. A word that sort of rolls off one's tongue. Not a word frequently used by a HT press member and certainly one that has never been used to describe a projector comparison or face off. I have seen it used to describe high end tweeter performance but never with respect to video performance or a video face off. Congratulations. Another first for Kris.

When do you expect to do the reviews?

I can get a very good deal on the Sony and get the JVC RS57 for half the price of the Sony, so I am wondering which way to go? I think JVC will release a 4K projector at CEDIA 2014 in 9 months! The question is will it be $15,000 as well

It's a rather busy time for most people. If I'd received my projector yesterday the day before or even today I'd have little or no time to check it out either, with all the preparations, activities and socializing for Christmas time.
I'd think it's the same for many others getting a projector right now.

Its Fantastic. Unbelievable. Amazing. I love it. It exceeded my expectations. Congrats to JVC and congrats to me for getting it. Opening the box and looking at it was only exceeded by the excitement of seeing my first newborn child for the first time. Then I slapped it down on a table, turned it on, leveled the feet, adjusted the placement, zoom and focus and shot it on the wall. Wowza Wowza. I was blown away, My hands are shaking. The intelligent iris. What can't I say. No pumping when watching my favorite 2D movie, Despicable Me. Some say they named that movie after me. Is intelligent applicable to how the iris works? YES I didn't think it was possible bui it exceeds Mensa entry levels. Blacks are so dark words like Inky just do it a gross unjustice. E-shift 3? Obliterates e-shift 1 and 2. Hard to describe the differences but you know it when you see it.

Merry Xmas all. I need to go watch my entire DVD and Bluray library of over 500 titles again. Based on Despicable Me it will be like watching them for the first time. I am sooo happy.

Edit. After 2 hours play time, I can absolutely detect no diming or other bulb issues.

Are you talking of rs49 ?

I meant the question, "Are you talking of rs49 ?". I was wondering if that was meant to be funny, or did the questioner not get that the "review" was a joke.

The comic "review" was so clearly stated as such, so I will continue the clearly confusing pattern of questioning and ask, are you saying the review or the subsequent question was a joke? biggrin.gif
