For the recent post about Carada screens, couple quick notes:
1. They will send out samples of the different fabric options. Tape these up side by side and it really helps make a decision. (I went BW)
2. For screen size, I highly recommend going without a screen for a month or so and just shoot onto a wall (if this is an option). The right size should naturally present itself to you based on your viewing distance, viewing habits, propensity for motion sickness, etc. Before buying a projector I was convinced I wanted a certain size screen (think 125" 16:9). Turns out that was way to big for my wife and I (both felt ill after short viewing sessions) and am really glad we didn't commit to that before we knew what we liked.

I started to read thru this thread, answers seem mixed. I have a light controlled basement, and viewing will mainly be in evening regardless, but I had an epson 8500 ub which I loved, but sold as it aged. I have a 112 inch fixed fram Grandview 1.0 screen, and my last projector was mounted at 13.0 feet. I could feesibly move up a foot if needed, but what is the consensus on the brightness of this projector. I read somewhere in this thread that epson recommended no larger than 110 inch screen for calibrated modes. Has anyone here upgraded from the epson 8500ub ? If so , is this brighter ? Also, is the fan really that noticable ? Cant remember ever hearing my epson 8500 ub which was mounted near seating, but above on ceiling. I'm considering the 5030, 5025 and the Sony hw 40es. The 5025 at 1699 with extra bulb seems like a great deal, but seems like this projector doesnt put out alot of light, calibrated. Ill appreciate any feedback I can get . Thanks

That's great advice, and exactly what I'm doing. I've just finished painting the wall with the Sherwin Williams ProClassic Satin Enamel. After much investigation, this was rated as being very close to a 1.0 gain and fairly neutral. I've used the exact dimensions of a 124" screen size, 16:9. I'm in a totally light controlled environment, so hopefully this will allow me to judge whether or not this is an appropriate size, or if I need to go smaller etc. before purchasing a screen. Unfortunately I'm traveling over the next few weeks so the 5030 projector will arrive but won't be able to do anything until later this month. If anyone is interested I'll post the results. Again want to thank everyone for all their help. RT

where do you see the 2 pairs of glasses? I want to buy from visual apex but via amazon to get 0% for 12mths... can I still do the bulb rebate?

If you go to visual apex site it shows all the details including 2 pair of 3D glasses. If you look at the fine print on Amazon sold by Visual Apex it indicates that lamp rebate apply to purchases from authorized dealer. I would give AVS a call to see what they might offer as well.

That's how I bought mine--VA via Amazon about 3(?) months ago and received my free lamp no problem. The 5030 comes with 2 pair of 3D glasses.

Got the 5030ub this weekend. The price and the free lamp makes this deal one of the best values right now imho. I'm surprised how good the THX and Cinema modes look out of box.

5030UB, about 6 months old, 540 hours on the lamp, always in (calibrated) THX mode, low power lamp setting.

Last night it started flickering. Earlier in the thread someone else with the same problem was told to try high power lamp setting for a few days. I did try that for a couple of hours and was then able to use low power lamp for half an hour before it started flickering again. I guess I do have to use high power lamp for a few days, not only for a few hours. Running it on high is not a permanent solution; I don't need the extra brightness and it's too loud anyway.

I absolutely love the picture quality of the 5030 but must admit that I think the overall quality is poor. Flickering after only 540 hours, inaccurate lens shift controls with a lot of slack, inability to hold the lens shift (mine drops slowly and has to be pulled back up every 5-7 days), noisy to the point of being useless auto iris, irregularly shaped image (I have a drop in the lower right corner that NOTHING can remove).

If I can't get rid of the flickering I'll find out if at least the customer service is as good as everyone says it is.

Adjusting settings according to personal preference is not calibration.

You could also try reseating the lamp. Remove it and then put it back in.

I had this issue with my 8350. I ran it on high for a few days and then put it back on low. Everything was fine afterwards. I should add that I have my 5030 on ECO and have 1300 hours on the lamp. No issues.

If you do have to deal with Epson's customer service, have no fear. My experiences with them have been exemplary.

Thanks, I'll try reseating it tomorrow. Worth a shot!

Another 5030UB

We moved from the east coast closer to the west coast, going from a house with a bonus room of ~12'x17' that I converted to a dedicated HT room. Now I'm going to convert a 2nd spare bedroom that's ~12'x14' to a semi-dedicated HT room.

We sold the H.T. with the house, leaving everything except the SVS PB-13 Ultra. I didn't know if we'd get a house that could accommodate a H.T. room, but we did. I ran through the choices and once again the 5030UB came up with the best combination of quality vs price for me.

The first time I inverted the 5030 and mounted it to the ceiling by going into the attic. This time I put up a wall mounted shelf, and so far this is a much easier method. I'm still in the "project onto the wall" period because I don't know how large we're going to choose.

Epson customer service is great. I called with the same problem and they confirmed with their engineer that it was a power supply problem. They sent out a replacement right away. They offer to pre-ship with a credit card hold.

I have a slight problem. When I first got the 5030 a couple months ago it would switch to 3D mode automatically when playing a 3D disc on my Oppo 103. I tried out the 3D conversion one day by hitting the 2D/3D button on the remote, and now I have to manually change it to 3D every time. The 3D is set to auto, but I can’t see anything that has changed. Any help would be appreciated.

I had no issues with a 120inch screen with my Epson 5030ub 15 foot back. That's on a diy screen of Wilson's designer white counter top, 1.0 gain ish. Now it's 16 foot back on a 138inch 2.35:1 screen with .8 gain and still looks good to me and every one else that's watch a movie on it. Now my room is pretty much a black hole. Black ceiling, black and dark tan walls. Darker carpet. No window's any where. That's running it in THX with normal lamp calibrated. Lamp on high really doesn't make that much difference to my eye's .

Hi MidnightWatcher,

Did you get the BestBuy Canada 5030UB special price deal? How do you like your new projector?

Our Canadian dollar has taken a hit, however, these Epson projectors have come down in price here in Canada. Is Epson trying to clear these from inventory to get ready for the 5040UB?

Curious.

Edit: Only speculation on my part but wonder if Epson is dumping American stock on the Canadian market with these projectors because it seems to good to be true with the lower price point and throwing in a free bulb with the deal.

I'm in Canada also and got it in a package deal from Eastporters, they gave a better deal than even Best Buy could provide. I picked everything up from them in Hamilton.

It states on the Epson Website. I believe you need a copy of receipt and other paper work to fill out for submission. All the steps should be clearly stated.

I got flicker recently. What is high power and low power lamp mode? Is that the Color Mode (Dynamic, Living Room, THX) or something different? Thanks

It's Power Consumption in the menu. In THX color mode you have Normal (low) and Extra Bright (high), in all others you have Normal (high) and ECO (low).

I ran mine on high for maybe 6 hours total and no longer have flickering on low. Hope it works for you too.

Not sure what to do if you use high normally. Maybe try the opposite and run on low for a while?

Pairing Panasonic 3D Glasses

HI, Just purchased a 5030. I have panasonic 3d model ty-ew3d3s glasses that worked with the 5010. Does anyone know how to sync these glasses to the 5030? I have tried with a 3d movie playing and then turning on the glasses within 10 feet of the projector but they don't ever sync. Thanks!!

That's all I did and it worked fine. Make sue you charge the glasses and that they are active RF glasses and not IR.
