Eager to hear if they fixed the sloppy and interacting vertical and horizontal lens shift controls of the 5010/6010/5020/6020 with the 5030/6030 for those of us with CIH setups

The lack of powered focus/zoom and lens memory considering the competition has it also is surprising.

I would imagine more and more people are going to 2.35:1 setups for projectors so this is important. Being able to watch 16:9 and 2.35:1 images with a nice black border around all four edges rocks.

WynsWrld98, I'm not sure what you're getting at here. Are you implying that there's issues with the vertical and horizontal shift controls on the Epson projectors?

Yes, they are crap.
They feel cheap, notchy and moving one affects the position of the other, so you end up moving one, then the other, then the first one again and so on until you get it right.
For us doing the poor mans zoom, its a bit fiddly.

When the time comes to upgrade, and if epson havent put a powered zoom/shift i'll be buying another brand.
Also, the 5010/6010/5020/6020 have issues of late starting/high speed fan on startup/unit not powering up/lens not opening ( they havent fixed it on the 2nd series ), so wondering if they did on the 3rd series.

From the images on Epson websites, it looks like the mechanics and body haven't changed at all. If you're so concerned with so many issues on the Epson, why would you even consider it? The Panny PT-AE8000U has what you're looking for (lens memory) around the same price, though they have their own set of issues as well.

I could have bought the 5020 at a discount but decided to wait for the 5030 because it does promise better PQ. The enhanced CR, the better lens and the changes to the LCD panel all, theoretically, will provide superior PQ. I guess we shall have to wait for the first hands-on, unbiased reviews before know for sure. Shouldn't be too long now - you lucky guys in the States will have them in your HTs before we get them here in the UK I am guessing. Still told 'end of October, beginning of November' by my dealer.

I've been waiting around to take advantage of a big ol' discount on the 5020UB but I too have decided to go 5030UB. Just got off the phone with a rep at Projector People and she told me that they have approximately 150 coming in from EPSON. I am still finishing up my basement but am really getting the itch to order it and get a picture up on the wall. biggrin.gif

Adjustment of vertical has some effect on horizontal lens shift on all projectors that I have seen.

Even with powered lens shift, you will be doing the same thing. Only way around that is to get a projector with Lens memory and even then it is not always perfect. If you want perfect aspect changes every time, buy an A-lens or a video scaler.

Wrong! This is my fourth projector and only one where horizontal and vertical lens shift affect each other and is very important for CIH setups!

You can't unilaterally state that he is wrong unless you know the exact list of every projector that he has experience with as he was clearly stating what his own experience has been. It may be that there is no intersection of projector usage between the two of you, and you have lucked out and found the few in the past where horizontal and vertical do not affect one another. Obviously the Epson line is not meant for you. Or perhaps you should consider the 6030 and an anamorphic lens as it's also quite clear that they market the 6030 towards CIH users and that the 50X0 projectors are not intended for people who change their lens settings frequently. .

WTF? He was making it sound like Epson's crappy shift controls are totally normal and acceptable they are NOT! Anamorphic lens are hugely expensive and not practical for most people in this price range. I am happy 6010 owner exceot for lens shift controls and simply asked if they work better in 5030/6030.

I currently own three projectors, one with powered lens shift with lens memory and two others with manual lens shift. I have also owned Epson projectors with lens shift and other projectors with manual and powered lens shift. Ever single one of them acts close to the same. When using powered or manual vertical lens shift, the horizontal location of the image changes, requiring you to go back and forth between the two to get the image centered. This goes for Sony, JVC, Epson, Planar, Viewsonic and others. This is why lens memory is such an important feature for those that use the zoom method. With lens memory, you do not have this problem. My Marantz projector did not have this problem, but it only had vertical lens shift.

Added
In a few weeks I will have a Sony VPL-VW600ES and I bet this projector will act the same when using the powered lens shift.

What are you talking about? Read what you quoted. He merely said that all projectors he has experience with have vertical and horizontal lens shift that affects one another and you said that he was wrong.

Look WynsWrld98, it's clear the Epson projectors don't suit you. We all get it, in your view they have crappy lens controls. You've repeated it ad nauseam throughout this thread. And guess what, Epson isn't going to change it in the 5030 just to suit you. The 5030 is done and is shipping, and it doesn't have lens memory and it doesn't have the power lens features that would help you. Go buy the Panny 8000, if this is your budget that's the obvious solution for you. If that one isn't good enough, then your SOL because that's what you get in this price range.

I myself am shopping for a new theater in the new house I'm building. For now I've narrowed my search down to the 5030 or the Panasonic. If I go with a 16x9 screen, I'm getting the Epson, if I decided to go for 2.37:1 I'm getting the Panasonic. Why? Because it's clear to me that the Epson isn't a good choice for a CIH installation.

BTW, I think Mike is 100% correct about what he's saying, because it's a matter of physics. You start moving the lens around in this manner it's going to affect where the image ends up. If you center the projector horizontally and vertically it might not be a problem, but then that can have other issues.

IDK about the US but in the UK they are offering the unit with a better warranty than the outgoing models:

  • On site projector warranty rather than return to base
  • 5 years projector warranty rather than 2 years
  • 5 years unlimited replacement lamp warranty rather than 3 years

Given the typical life of a PJ in terms of the longevity of its technology, this pretty much means we'll be under warranty the entire time we own the PJ. Or, of selling the unit in order to upgrade at some stage, the resale price will hold up better because it can be sold on with a decent warranty period remaining.

That would be a pretty big deal, especially in this segment (<$4000). 5 years, with replacement? If they add a game mode and if they get calibrated brightness up too it's game over and they will really corner the market.

edit: Epson website says "Two-year projector limited warranty, Epson Home Service Program, Epson PrivateLine® dedicated toll-free support and 90-day lamp limited warranty."

- Klipsch RF-82 ii, RC-62 ii, RS-52 ii
- Klipsch RW-12D
- Sony HW50es
- Firehawk G3
- Denon 2113

I have confirmed with two different UK dealers that it is a 5 year on site warranty here in the UK.  Might be different for you guys - I hope not.

It's actually even better than I thought - the 5 year lamp warranty is for unlimited lamp replacements!  As you say, it is a pretty big deal for the price.

Can anyone confirm/deny if there is a 'Game Mode' on this model?

I'd like to know too but I doubt there will be or else it would have been mentioned, I think. There is a fine and fast processing mode that I know of. Using that should eliminate some input lag.

Thanks for that SKU!  I ordered it from Best Buy and is due to arrive 10/22.  FYI: Since it's not in any of their normal systems yet, they have to put in an OMS order.

Just wanted to give everyone a status update from Projector People. I ordered my Epson 5030 last Sunday evening and chose overnite delivery. When I spoke with one of the customer service reps this week, he said they were expecting them overnited from Epson anyday now. The gentleman emailed me back again today to let me know that 10 are arriving Monday and another 15 on Tuesday. I happened to get in the first 10, so I should have mine by Tuesday. Can't Wait!!!!

So, it makes sense that VA claims an ETA of 10/7. It was 10/9 until Thursday morning.

I've had a used 8350 for about a year. Wanted a 5020, but bought a refurbed 5010 for $1500. Picture was noticeably better, but died in a few days. I found these 5030s coming out really soon. Expecting "near greatness".....

It's actually even better than I thought - the 5 year lamp warranty is for unlimited lamp replacements!  As you say, it is a pretty big deal for the price.

Well, now you can go for the record. There was a customer on AVS a while back that went through something like 8 lamps in five years. He said he ran his projector from morning to night 7 days a week for five years. He had close to 30,000 hours on his Sony VPL-VW60. Poster was unhappy that his projector was starting to fail. He thought it should have lasted longer. biggrin.gif
