http://www.heimkinoraum.de/upload/files/product/Sony_VPL-VW500_Projector_datasheet_V4.pdf

Here is the Sony brochure on the VPL-VW500ES.

Please do not ask questions answered by it. If you can't read it, ask a friend to read it to you. smile.gif

Although not in the brochure, the throw ratio spec is 1.37 to 2.83. That means you can place the picture anywhere within that multiplier range times your 16:9 screen width and be able to get the image to fit your screen. Placement for anamorphic zooming will require placement within this range with sufficient zooming to accomplish your objective.

Please ask screen questions in another thread. There is no such thing as a best screen for this or any projector. Screens recommendations involve mostly screen size, lumens available at a specific throw ratio, the ft lamberts you would like, projector set up, and room environmental considerations with the added factor of the screen being smooth enough to sharply present all those marvelous 4K pixels.

I will not be at Cedia this year because of a leg injury.

So please post your questions here and I will place them in this first post.

Is the gold ring around the lens functional. If so, what function does it serve?

Is there an automatic lens cover such as is on the VPL-VW1000ES?

Does the unit use dynamic lamp pulsing in 3D?

Is there a game mode and if so, what is the input lag with it on?. What is the input lag with it off or if there is none, what is the input lag?

If the product number is different in the US (expected to be the VPL-vw600ES) than the one overseas (VPL-VW500ES), why is it different?

What is the MSRP? Is this locked in concrete or could it change by the end of the show ala the VPL-VW95ES?

When is the expected date that my dealer can officially order it?

When is it expected to ship to dealers?

Will dealers be allocated or will shipments be shipped as ordered in the order received?

Will the Sony stores be given priority on the first units?

Does the lens use any low dispersion elements?

What is the expected half life of the lamp at low and at high power. Does the lamp meter add additional time for operation at high lamp?

What is the MSRP of replacement lamps.

Can Sony's IR glasses be used with the unit? If there is no built in IR sender is there a a jack to hook an external IR sender or is there some other solution?

How many pairs of RF glasses are included with the projector?

Will Sony be sending projectors to the major US projector mount companies way in advance of projected shipments for a one day loan so they can fabricate a mounting plate and have them ready for sale in advance of shipments? Will you be sure that somebody takes care of this? You don't want to make the same mistake of omission that one of your competitors made several years ago.

Why the product number in USA is 600ES and everywhere else around the world is 500ES?

Whats the official USA MSRP?

Whats the plan USA release date?

Will the PS4 have 4K content? When will the media box come to Canada? Is the PS4 HDMI 2.0?

None of those are questions about the 500/600ES. Obviously there are ps4 questions, server questions, 55 questions, 1100ES questions, panel questions, upgrade to the 1000ES questions, questions re any differences re the upgraded 1000ES and the 1100ES, and expected PQ differences between the 500 and the 1100. As the keeper of this thread, I shall limit it to the 500/600. and Cedia is a Sony US show. Sony US is not Sony Canada. I suggest asking these questions elsewhere particularly in different forums re the server, panels, PS4, and Sony Canada. smile.gif I would like people to be able to use this thread easily for 500/600 questions to Sony.

The VPL-VW500ES can show up to 60 frames per second in 4K (at colour signal YUV 4:2:0 / 8 bit). Why not 4:2:2 or 4:4:4? Why not 10 or 12 bit? Will this affect color / banding?

Any way to also support previously purchased IR glasses (like Sony PS3 glasses)? Cost of optional RF glasses?

Expected lamp life hours? Replacement cost after 1 year / 1000 hour warranty?

Until there is a wider color space than Rec. 709, banding should not be worse than at the present 8 bits.

The higher bit rates (10 and 12) and chroma sampling (4:2:2, 4:4:2 and 4:4:4) are, I think, beyond coming chip limits. Perhaps one more knowledgeable than I here, can contribute and if my assessment is not correct, I will formulate a question for Sony.

OK. Now we need a volunteer who will ask the appropriate people at Sony the questions and promptly post the answers in this thread. By appropriate people this does not mean just anybody with a Sony badge. The right people would be the Sony ES product manager and one of the Sony projection engineers from Japan. One should first attend the relevant Sony product demo show, here the 500/600, and then follow your nose. Questions will be answered and people will be pointed out to whom questions should be directed. Be respectful and please understand that the Sony people have important business to conduct so you may have to be patient and be subject to interruption. This is a trade show and you are here as a consumer. So be very nice and maintain the highest standards. Refrain from such comments as, Man. I can't believe you don't know that, or I can't believe you think MTF is a dirty word for part of the female anatomy. Answers to certain questions will not be known. Accept I'll get back to you and leave your email address for a response. This is not an opportunity to show you are smarter than and know more than a person you are addressing. That is what the forum is often for.

My understanding is this has typically been much less of an issue on Sony's recent projectors than JVC's but I'll add these as questions for the VW500 as well: is there a game mode / low-latency option? What is the input latency with game mode off and on (assuming it has one?)

As far as I know, the 500es uses the same panels as the vw1000, and that projector, using game mode, has around 40 ms of lag. I'd imagine it'd be similar

Yeah I've seen that, but using the same panels doesn't necessarily mean much, as I'd surmise that in most displays of any type, the physical display medium accounts for only a tiny bit of the total throughput latency and most of it comes from the video processing side of the equation. If that wasn't the case then it wouldn't really make sense to even have a game mode that disables a bunch of the interframe processing algorithms. smile.gif

Agreed, we need more details about the PS4 including if it will work with Sony's content downloads just like the puck or if there is a reason to have both. If the PS4 isn't HDMI 2.0, I probably won't bother buying day one. In fact, I would worry that a hardware refresh would have HDMI 2.0.

EDIT: I see I'm not supposed to ask content questions here. If I find somebody offering to ask PS4 HDMI 2.0 questions, I'll try posting there. But I doubt much of anybody besides 1000ES/500ES users care...

I agree also. Def want to know what will happen with PS4 4K output and will it interface and work with the VW1000 upgraded / VW1100?

Pretty sure PS4 will be able to do just 1080p for games. 4K will be probably upscaled for both, games and video.

See where PS3 is now. The games are just 720p !

PC is much more powerful than poor ps4 now.

PC was much more powerful 3 years ago eek.gif

REALLY need to know if the PS4 is gonna be the 4k service provider we hope it will become. That way we don't need no hockey puck server (overpriced) and the PS4 can do ALOT more and it's half the price.

I was ref strictly to 4K media content. I'm sure games will be good, but I can't see them really competing with my 2450x1600 Nvidia 680GTX 4.0 Ghz ivy bridge 16 gig PC. Esp if I move up to a 7xx series Nvidia. With that said it's the exclusive content that gives me a reason to play games on the PS platform. If I was completely wrapped up in just specs, I'd have never gotten to enjoy The Last of US on PS3. Plus you have to say take into account even for a person who builds there own PCs like me the costs of that additional performance costs a heck of a lot more than a PS4 does. heck even upgrading to a current spec video card can cost as much as a console on its own. On the other hand I'm def holding out on GTA V due to specs wink.gif

Sorry for the OT.....

Trust me I know the cost of PC gaming......3 way GTX 780s and running 3D vision surround at 6080 x 1080p res. wink.gif

Yes. Last of Us was awesome, and proves that specs and graphics aren't everything.

Yes with GTA V. I don't want to "disrespect" the game by playing an inferior console version.

6080 is a bezel corrected resolution. Creates invisible resolution between monitors so transitions are smoother between monitors. Still has to render those invisible pixels smile.gif

Ok, makes sense. I never got into triple monitor much and run a 21:9 monitor instead. For FP shooters triple monitor is "too" much visual information for me. But fantastic for racing games / rts / mmo's

Yeah. Filling your entire FOV is very immersive. Now I want to do that with 3 projectors smile.gif and the awesome thing is there are no bezels with projectors.

I almost did that in my theater, but with a 4K projector, huge screen and running in 2.35/2.40 ratio, I'm glad I didn't bother.
