I propose we from now on call all other irises for SI's or stupid irises to distinguish them from jvc's intelligent irises since we're obviously talking about something completely different here...

I start a serious, well reasoned thread and immediately it gets dumbed down.

Well we have the current DI(Dumb Iris) & from those DI's with lesser capability, the DDI(Dumb & Dumber Iris)..........and of course JVC next year will release the HIQI(High Intelligence Quotient Iris)........and the following year EHIQI(Even High Intelligence Quotient Iris) and so on.......

May the success of a Nation be judged not by its collective wealth nor by its power, but by the contentment of its people.

JVCs official name for its new automated iris is called Intelligent Lens Aperture or ILA. Of course the JVC panels themselves are called D-ILA, So now I guess if were it not for this OFFICIAL thread we would have to call JVC D-ILA projectors with ILA, JVC ILA D-ILA projectors.

NOT ON MY WATCH. They are not going to get away with fostering two ILA designations on us. We aren't patsies, well actually maybe some of you are. No. Just like the population calls Coca Cola, Coke and in Denver Mary Jane is called Magic Smoke, JVCs Intelligent Lens Aperture (and lens aperture means iris of course, that is what an iris is) shall be Intelligent Iris or II. Tell JVC you are just not going to take it any more. Its a JVC II D-ILA machine or a JVC II 4K E-Shift III D-ILA projector. But you are not going to type or babble multiple ILAs.

is it different than a DI? cause marketing blows smoke like no other business. if it's not any different they don't deserve a different name among those that know better.

It performs the same function a DI does. As far as mechanics, software, and physical form goes we aren't sure yet. But yes, this is a DI and just like eshift they're trying to label the product as something that it isnt.

I guess JVC and I are Rodney Dangerfield's. We can't get any respect. You guys aren't getting into my caddy shack and when I was a kid, I caddied a lot. Double bags.

it's not an issue with JVC that i have, it's an issue with marketing. i actually respect JVC more than most in the mainstream because of how realistic most of their specs/ratings actually are. how else could you explain a projector with 50000:1 contrast and 1300lumens being brighter and yet still blacker than projectors advertised as 1600+lumens and well over 100000:1 contrast.

if there's some fundamental difference between the way their's works, fine, but otherwise it's a marketing term. just like frame interpolation, i don't care what you call it, if it's inserting fake frames to smooth out motion, it's frame interpolation and i personally don't want that.

I'm encouraged that they call it Intelligent Lens Aperture, as it implies a DI that will increase CR as it closes down.

The JVC guy that Scott Wilkinson's talked with differentiated between native and dynamic CR, so kudos for that.

But JVC calls it an Intelligent Lens Aperture......if you're dropping the word Lens shouldn't the abbreviation be IA and not II? tongue.gifeek.gifsmile.gif

A lens aperture is an iris and an iris is abbreviated I when preceded by a descriptive modifier. Thus II where the first I is my chosen abbreviation for Intelligent regardless of how much intelligence this thread's responders seem to be lacking except for Noah Katz..

Mark,
To carry this banal discussion one step further I applaud your choice of the word Iris instead of Aperture. An Iris is the mechanism that changes the aperture.....the aperture is nothing more than a hole thru which light exits the iris. JVC is claiming they have a smart lens hole eek.gif (aka: intelligent lens aperture) whilst you're saying they have a smart Iris....you're legendary a HT stud....smile.gif

Actually, a very perceptive comment and one that adds insightful reasoning to my less that fully articulated thought process. JVC really had to stretch to avoid the words dynamic and iris. They worked so hard in coming up with an alternative, it motivated me to make the official II designation that all must follow in their forum posts.
