I would have expected this to be too dark. So what do you think's going on? Is the calculator wrong, is the standard wrong, or am I just a poor judge of picture quality? smile.gif

Edit: projector is set to "Cinema 2" and low lamp.

THX specification is 16 ftL

So I ended up getting a 55ES today, which is my very first projector.  On a 16 foot throw to a 137" temporary screen right now (just using raw material from Carl's to test everything out).

I'm floored.  This thing feels decadent.  Haven't even delved into calibrations yet, but the picture is sharp and beautiful.  Watched The Fifth Element since I'm familiar with how it should look and it has lots of great color plus the black of deep space.  It was a better experience than a lot of theaters I've been too.

It's amazing what you get used to.  I had no idea just how bad the quality and color of my old 50 inch rear projection was.  I knew it wasn't great, but wow.  What a difference.

Day 5. Pinned up some black felt. Yeah. Fantastic amount of improvement.

Had a brief scare last night when I noticed a constant flicker. Researched the boards and found advice to turn off Film mode in motion control. Whew. Gone. Why would anyone use that?

After going back and forth have pretty much settled on a 120" wide CIW screen.

Am very much enjoying the projector.

The most important if you watch 3d on this projector is to let the projector warm up about 10 to 15 minutes..

If you switch the projector on and direct gonne watch some 3d you will get alot of ghosting(and i mean alot)..

But If you let the projector warmup there is a big difference(and i mean a big).

The start of the movie Hugo 3d looks amazing on this projector in 3d...alot of detail and great colors..

There is some ghosting but you will forget it because the rest looks so damm great:)

Much better then my old epson tw9000..

Hello! Congrats to all those that have already purchased/received their HW55ES. I'm sitting on the fence, getting closer to making my purchase...

Has anyone here hooked up an apple TV to this (or any other) projector? I purchase most of my content through iTunes and many of the movies are displayed on my HDTV in 2.35 x 1 (i.e., black borders above and below). I'm curious what options I have for display with the HW55ES. How would it look? Please bear with me because I'm new to projectors and I believe the apple TV has very limited (if any) aspect ratio settings beyond 3:4 and 16:9.

Thanks for any and all replies!

Hey guys. I'm wondering if anyone has compared this to the Epson 5030?

I have a room that during the day is fairly bright with lots of glass french doors surrounding it. Even with curtains closed there's light from the dining room etc.

I was hoping this sony under torch mode was bright enough on a Black Diamond Zero Edge 100" 0.8 gain screen. Or should i just stick with the epson?

Thanks!

You're probably going to need the Epson, but you can always try the Sony and see how it fares and send it back if it's not bright enough. Once my home is complete next month, I'll have a motorized black velvet curtain that I can close to block light from entering into my living/theater room from my dining/kitchen area during critical viewing. Cost about $1000.00 and should work really well. If you want the Sony, I would consider this option...else I would go with the Epson.

UPDATE:
I ordered from here if anyone is interested in going this route:

Motorized Curtain

Curtain Material

Pricing will vary depending on width of opening and curtain style. There are many options.

I had the home builder integrate mine into the ceiling, but it seems pretty straightforward to DIY. smile.gif

Yesterday i got a playstation 4,

Now i did some gaming with battle field 4 on the sony hw55es..

The lag is very minimal and its a blast to play this game on this projector(and that for a old man lol).

I used to play battlefield 3 on my old epson tw9000 but on this sony its alot better..

So also gamers would be happy with this projector..

Sounds good. I'll be upgrading from an Epson 6500UB and I'm hoping for some gaming improvements. I recently played BF4 on Xbox360 and then moved to Xbox One. That jump alone on the same projector was a noticeable improvement in fluidity. The next gen consoles feel like they're running at better frame rates and feel more responsive as a whole.

Was still hoping to hear from someone who has hooked this projector up to an Apple TV. Specifically, how did it look?

Also, has anyone used a wall mount with this TV (either shelf or arm)? What did you use and are you happy with the results?

Thanks for any replies!

I will be hooking mine up on a wall mount shelf once it comes in. I'll let you know how it goes.

I just received my HW55ES and wondered what others are doing for additional 3D IR glasses.  Has anyone tried the Xpand X105-IR lightweight glasses?  Any others to consider?  Finally, what are the best re/e-tailers to shop for these?

Thanks,

David

Guys

For USD 600 difference, would you guys choose a 55ES over 50ES? Both are new and comes with factory warranty.

I am just wondering how big is the step up as eventually I would like to own a 4k PJ in 2-3 years time. I currently have a Epson 1080p LCD non-3D.

Thanks

The biggest difference supposedly between the 50 and 55 is the cooling of the lamp on the 55 thus giving giving more lamp hours usage.
The lamps for the 50 are not really that expensive.

If $600 is a lot of money to you and you're indeed going to upgrade to a 4K PJ in ~4 years or so, then I would get the HW50. I just like having the newest kit, so I couldn't talk myself into buying last years model.

I would be fine with either. I bought the 55ES because I actually got pricing better than I had found on the 50 - but it has yet to arrive. Anticipation is killing me.....or more accurately - it's killing my wife, becuase "her" TV has been tuned to almost all sports the last several weeks. biggrin.gif

Officially an owner - just picked it up. 20 minutes to install and adjust, and I am impressed. Will spend more time with it tomorrow night; unfortunately have other business commitments tonight.

So far, it looks like it was worth the wait.

That's good news so far. Please give us a detailed report (e.g., screen specs, room specs, etc...) when you get the time. Mine will be here as soon as AVS ships it to me...can't wait! biggrin.gif

Detailed report tomorrow or Saturday, but I popped in Finding Nemo 3D and was blown away. The menu is like having a huge aquarium in the wall. And the beginning of chapter 3 when Nemo flies out of the anenome, I flinched! Thrilled! Feel like calling off work tomorrow. biggrin.gif
