Time to start a contest. What will be the US MSRP and what will be the street price? The prize? 5 AVS tag posting points.

I hope I live long enough, and still have enough cash available to enjoy a new 4k projector, a new 4k player, and all the 4k content to play on it.

Talk about coming out of no where! They probably went all in on this one as far as their projector business goes.

And Panasonic is the only company with true 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 chips at the moment. If they use Sony SXRD panels for this, it might be a serious contender to the VW500/600.

it could be, as long as they got rid of the engineers who invented smooth screen. That would have no place in the 4K market imo.

More competition is always a good thing and I am curious to hear more about this projector, but PLEASE ditch SS which I would have to think they would with a 4k projector.

They have to be using SXRD. There is no way in hell Epson or JVC would allow Panasonic to bring a D-ILA or 3LCD 4K projector to market before their own brand has one out. Also, Sim2 and/or Runco will probably be the first to bring 4K DLP to market and the newest reports say that TI won't have consumer grade 4K DMDs until 2015 now.

Could 1080p panels and wobulation be used? Why would Sony license or supply them with its SXRD panels when Panasonic wouldn't make its own 18GBs chip available to Sony?.

Hi

That's true, but maybe we will have a surprise from Epson also.

Sony and Panasonic are partners for OLED production. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Panasonic unit ends up being similar to the 500/600ES.

Pana's spokesman Tetsuya (Tony) Itani-san mentionned in the above article is the Engineer responsible for the development of all Panasonic BluRay palyers (we met during IFA 2013), so my guess is that at CES 2014 beyond this Pana 4K projector, we will also probably see a replacement for the excellent Pana BDT500 BluRay player with a UHD/4K capacity, based on the latest evolution of Panasonic's proprietary very powerful Uniphier video chip... wink.gif

He definitely won't have the cash for that unless he strikes it reach. Decent 8K lenses are very expensive and really don't exist for projectors. Of course maybe an all plastic one.

Panasonic and Sony are no more OLED partners. They will focus on 4k instead.

It's possible as Epson has been working on a 4K display chip. I suspected they would be ready for an announcement at CEDIA 2014, but perhaps they will be ready to announce earlier at CES, especially if they expect to have projectors ready to ship before Sept. 2014 (i.e, date of next CEDIA Expo). As for Panasonic, they are the only company currently with HDMI 2.0 chips supporting the full 18 Gbps bandwidth, so if they really do have a new 4K projector being introduced at CES then I would expect it to support the higher refresh rates, higher fidelity chroma subsampling schemes and with greater bit depth enabled with a full bandwidth HDMI 2.0 implementation.

HOWEVER - Unless Epson is ready to announce their own 4K projector, which I doubt, then Panasonic will be using either LCoS or DLP technology. Given that production quantities of the consumer 4K DMDs (i.e., DLP) are not expected from TI until 2015, that leaves LCoS (or Sony SXRD) as the most likely tech in the Panasonic 4K projectors.

I am a man without a country. A CIH guy with a interest in Low Lag for gaming. I sold my Panny 4000u. Tested a 8000u, had severe handshake issues, got refund and got a bad taste about that model. Looking at the Sony VW95ES which means I pay MSRP or buy second hand which is stressful either way for a 2+ year old projector. Now I am Projectorless without a polestar or rudder to guide me :P If this 4k turns into the next best thing from Panny, I presume October is the earliest it will be for sale??? A 4k probably won't help Panny's decent 30ish ms lag. What to do rolleyes.gif

Hmm, never really thought about it...

So, lets say I go JVC for Movies, what would be a good Gaming one? A DLP I am thinking, which could be cheaper...maybe. Need to do some research. To your point, maybe I can have everything I want with two.

That's what most members do since there is no one projector for all needs. The popular choice is a JVC and a cheaper Benq. What's your budget?

Panasonic did mention, during their press conference, there will be a 4K business projector that, from what little was said, appears to have something along the lines of eShift to provide a pseudo 8K display. It sounded like it won't be out until the 2nd half of 2014 and since this is a business projector it may not be suitable for home theater use. Perhaps they have something planned for consumers, but it was mentioned in the news conference. Hopefully there will be more info available after the trade floor opens tomorrow.
