Questions for Cedia Attendees about the New Sony Projectors

Just like last year, I am starting threads for each brand of projectors shown at Cedia this year that You would like answers from attendees such as the AV Science sales staff, the AV Science forum staff, press, and forum members attending Cedia this year. If you post an appropriate (see below) question or questions, I will include them (with any appropriate substantive edits etc) in the following post to make accessing them for answer easier and to ensure none get overlooked.

The Expo show floor opens at 10AM mountain time on Thursday the 11th. Please do not ask where is my answer on Weds night. Please do not ask where is my answer at all. Attendees need time to see the show, meet with various manufacturers, and enjoy the parties and Denver. When questions are answered, I will post the post number(s) of the answer(s) next to the questions in my questions post (No. 2). Please understand that projector demos are under show conditions. Ambient noise levels are high, lighting and room reflectivity conditions may not be ideal etc and content is controlled. Manufactures do not conduct sales demos where the potential buyers can ask can we play scene X from Gravity for example. A/Bs to previous models are impossible. Questions such as can you notice the improvement in on/off from 40,000 to 45,000 simply can't be answered based on a show viewing. Ditto about the noise improvement from say 23 db to 21 db or the noise level from a moving iris. Can you please check zebra striping improvement this year? I will reject any such question. I will post questions you want a manufacture to answer for presentation by attendees and all appropriate observational questions for attendees.

I am doing this because I am not attending the show and it needs to be done. My only compensation is the likes you give me if you should be so moved.

Request to moderators, would you please make this and the threads for the other brands of projectors a sticky?

Link to a video of the sony press conference which took place Weds morning will be posted when available.

The new model is called the Sony VPL-VW300ES in Europe and likely will be called the Sony VPL-VW400ES here in the states. It appears to be the same kit as the VPL-VW500/600ES but with the elimination of the DI, the lowering of the lamp wattage from 265 to 230, the elimination of auto calibration, and the elimination of the zoom memory. Contrary to our earlier speculation, motorized lens control has been maintained. The weight is 31 lbs. A mode has been added to reduce the input lag when playing games. The lumens has been lowered from 1700 to 1500. The contrast ratio is 20,000, the same as the native on the 500/600. Supports 2160p @60Hz with 4:2:0 and 8-bit depth just as before on the 500/600 and the 1100. Equipped with HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 on one of the HDMI inpu ts. RF 3D glasses. Don't know if any glasses are included with the set. Firmware can be updated via USB input. RS232, RJ45 wired LAN and IR inputs for control and connection to home automation systems. Color Management System. No change from the 500/600 in throw ratios or in lens shift.

Here is a link to the UK brochure and specifications:

Let your questions for Cedia now fly and I will post them in this post.

Good idea!

Hopefully we'll have more info on Wednesday when the new model(s) are launched at the IFA Berlin.

I'm potentially interested in the new 4K model (the one below the 500/600ES) and my questions are as follow:

- Does it have 10 bits panels?
- Does it have full HDMI 2.0a with HDCP 2.2 or is it limited to HDMI 2.0b like the 500/600/1x00?
- Does it have motorized lens/focus/shift and lens memories or not? I know this is unlikely but if it doesn't it's a dealbreaker for me.
- What is the native on/off?
- What is the maximum achievable native gamut (so excluding xvycc)? Rec-709 like the 500/600 or DCI/P3 like the 1x00?
- Does the lens fully resolve 4K like the 1x00 or does it resolve something in between 2K and 4K, like the 500/600 and the JVCs with e-shift? Does it resolve even less than the 500/600?

That's about it.

Mark - As far as I can tell, Sony has not announced a press event at CEDIA. They usually have one on either late Wed. afternoon or early Thur. morning, but no info, so far. If someone hears about one at IFA or CEDIA, and especially if the event will be streamed via the web, I suggest that info, including a URL if being streamed, be added to Post #1 of this thread.

Sony has announced an event for tomorrow (the 3rd) at IFA regarding their new 4K model. I posted the link in the Sony predictions thread last week, no one seemed to care. They will give details on their twitter account (or their website). Not sure if it will be streamed live.

My guess is that the new projector will follow the trend and have a different (smaller) chassis and a different bulb. This will most likely mean a different/altered light engine that has both less brightness, contrast, and a smaller/cheaper lens which will give less natural sharpness/focusing capabilities, more chromatic aberrations, and worse off focus towards the corners. It will also most likely be a manual lens. Be prepared for a much less refined image. That's what normally happens when we start to see "cheaper" models. It's compromise after compromise. I would imagine a more aggressive DI and a more aggressive RC default position to try and make up for the lens quality and contrast difference. This was very apparent in the HW50ES model regarding RC.

It will be much like the Sony vs JVC 1080p battle. JVC has the advantage in the lower price brackets because of their production model. They have economies of scale whereas Sony can't compete because they produce unique products at different price points. JVC projectors are all basically the same with just a couple tweaks and added features/hardware included on the "higher end" models. As others have pointed out, lens quality takes the biggest hit at this lower price segment.

Ahem guys. Please read the title of this thread again. This is not a prediction thread and a debate based on predictions. Your discussion is great but please do it in another thread. I have to monitor each post in 6 or so different threads to make sure I don't miss amy questions and then list each question in post two. The thread should be for Cedia questions and the posting of answers thereto by attendees.

Couldn't find the link to the live stream, but here is the agenda for tomorrow's event at 3pm GMT:

http://community.sony.co.uk/t5/prod...nologies/our-agenda-for-ifa-2014/ba-p/1743079

As indicated in this press release http://www.projection-homecinema.fr/2014/08/25/sony-ifa-2014-teaser-nouveau-projecteur-sony/ they will introduce a new 4K home-cinema projector (I assume the one below the 500/600ES).

I just hope it's not this one: http://www.whathifi.com/news/sony-announces-launch-new-projectors

The streaming should be posted on @SonyDisplays, as they have already tweated the teaser: https://twitter.com/SonyDisplays

So follow them if you want the link ;) ...

Also I'd like to add the following questions:

- What is the input lag with native 2160p and with upscaled 1080p?
- Is gamma calibration still available through the Image Director PC software?
- Can the PJ be switched on or off using LAN control (AFAIK this isn't possible with the current models)
- What is the fan noise level at 2-3ft from the PJ?
- Does it have the internal autocal feature of the 500/600ES?

Here is another link I found for getting the streaming video of the Sony Press Event at IFA. It appears to be a site for various IFA press events. There seems to be a bit of confusion on the time of the Sony press conference. The Sony UK site says 1500 GMT (with the actual press conf. starting at 1515 GMT) and it's my understanding GMT does not account for 1 hour advance of daylight savings time or summer time. I that case US Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) is only 4 hours earlier, or 11:15 am. However the German IFA-TV site simply shows the time as 16.15 hours and they don't indicate it that is CET or CEST (summer time) in Berlin, and if it is the current local CEST then the US EDT would be 6 hours earlier or 10:15 am. One other European Sony site does say 1600 CET which would again be 11 am (with the actual press conf. starting 15 minutes later). So it appears it will mostly likely start at 11:15 US EDT tomorrow, but it may pay to check an hour earlier just to be sure not to miss it.

Correct - my only issue is from the IFA-TV site that simply lists the local time in Berlin at 1600 hours for the Sony event and they don't say if that CET (Central European Time) or CEST (Central European Summer Time) which is currently being used in Berlin. I do believe the correct time would be 11:15 EDT in the USA.

You absolutely don't need to be signed up to twitter to access that link/page. You can just close the pop up that appears asking you to register/log in, and you'll see the whole page.

The only advantage of being on twitter - in this situation - is that you can follow that account and therefore know when they post the link as soon as they do so instead of having to check regularly.

Here is the actual streaming link for the presentation: http://community.sony.co.uk/t5/ifa/ct-p/ifa_en, as published on the @SonyDisplays twitter account:

Sony @ IFA 2014

On September 3, join us live from IFA 2014 for the Sony keynote at 16:15 CET (15:15 GMT), and stick around for an exciting live Q&A after the event!

I don't know how long it will take them, but for those who can't wait here is the projector they are about to announce: http://pjhc.fr/

VPL-VW300ES

Well, it is finally revealed, the new 4K SXRD projector from Sony, the VPL-VW300ES. This model based on the hull of the VPL-VW500ES remains a projector with UHP light source, available from mid-October 2014 it falls below 7000 €. We are well past the first three years of a model set to € 20,000 (VPL-VW1000ES) to € 10,000 in 2013 with the VPL-VW500ES € 6990 and now with this new VPL-VW300ES.
The optical unit remains fully motorized but to save costs, SONY abandons the storage device zoom and auto-calibration module VPL-VW500ES.
The performances by the manufacturer is also coming down with a reported 1,500 lumens light output and a contrast ratio of 20,000: 1. He wins by contrast with CRESTRON accounting modules.

Very cool. Thank you.

Quite good that it keeps the motorized optical unit. Apparently only the autocal goes?
Unfortunately (but as expected) still only HDMI 2.0b (but with HDCP 2.2).
1500 lumens
That sounds great for 6900 euros.

More details in the link above.

Doest this means that the new VW300 has no Lens Memory to switch from 16:9 to 21:9, or what they mean with: "SONY abandons the storage device zoom "??

Cheers
S.

EDIT: Actually yes, it does mean that, no zoom/lens memory, but electronic control for zoom, focus and shift.
