Sounds very interesting. When they say 4k enhancement I presume that we're talking about faux 4k ala E-Shift? In any case will be fascinating to find out in time the real performance criteria of this new projector.

that's a good one... '4K enhancement'...

hey, JVC did it and made everyone think it was 4K, why not Epson.

edit: I would change the title, people are seriously going to think it's full 4K.

I mostly care about the laser engine and the lumen output! Hope it's 2000+ lumens!!! And 50,000 life hour!

We'll have to wait and see what lens quality is like, DI performance, light output, ANSI contrast, ect from reviewers. It's going to take a lot to beat what JVC is already doing.

Epson is showing at IFA Berlin which starts on what is Friday in Berlin. We should know more very shortly. 20,000 hrs is more like the life of a phosphor wheel and that is using a lot of tricks to get there.

Thats true. And im sure JVC has something special coming up too. Laser, true 4k, or both. Love this time of the year

3D lumen output and x-talk performance is my main interest on this model. This will probably take some time to get honest info. I expect first impressions (insert this new projector or any other) 'Very bright in 3D, no crosstalk to be seen'...

Thread title should be changed SOWK if possible. I thought I was going to find a true 4K projector reading that! Still sounds like an interesting machine though and I am curious to hear more.

I honestly have no hope for the 3d, but I would love to be surprised. I will get interested in non DLP 3d machines when they can hang with DLP in regards to ghosting/flicker.

I am more curious what the 2d will be like.

Apparently Art at Projector Reviews will be posting his review of this projector in 9 days or so. Art says he's a 3D lover but he seems to go easy on most 3D projectors when it comes to ghosting. I'll be interested in what he says about how this Epson handles ghosting and just what torture tests he put it through to ascertain its 3D capabilities. The 3D test pattern showing possible contamination of the right channel by the left and the left by the right would do the trick.

it's such an easy test, only a very small handful of reviewers actually take the time to do it.

it's the 1 test a reviewer can do to take the subjectivity out of the equation. Simply run the L/R patterns and a 1/2 dozen shots we've been discussing since 2010.

hopefully Kraine will get a hold of one, I will have a hard time trusting responses on this without the above tests.

No doubt. Like Zombie says, it's an easy test and would take a lot of the subjective BS out of the equation. Still curious to hear what he thinks though in general.

It will probably beat the JVC in some areas but not meet the JVC's performance level in others. For example, I doubt it will beat the RS49 series for native black levels and CR but perhaps be similar or a little better than the Sonys (just my speculation based on what Epson had for their LCD-R prototype a couple of years ago). On the other hand Epson may have better performance is some other area(s) such as ANSI CR, DI, or pixel shifting. We should start to get answers within the next few days. Also whatever is announced at IFA will have a different model number than the US version and we will have to wait to CEDIA to get the US prices. Finally the prototype projectors being shown at IFA and CEDIA will probably not have some functions operational as the software/firmware is usually not completed until fairly close to the shipping date. I know last year JVC's demo units at CEDIA were missing some of the functions and options that were on the production projectors.

I'm a pretty big stickler when it comes to DI performance. From what I've seen Epson is still way behind with it's DI performance compared to JVC, Sony, and Runco. If they're native contrast performance isn't up to JVC's level then they'll need to implement their DI good enough so that it can be used with only the rare instance of flickering, pumping, and clipped whites. This is how Sony, JVC, and Runco's implementations work right now. From previous DI's that I've seen from Epson it looks like they'd need to completely overhaul their DI algorithms to match what these other companies already offer. ANSI contrast will be interesting and I hope Epson can pull it off, but as you've said, we'll have to wait and see.

Seeing how it's almost identical to the 600ES, in that there's no offset to the lens, it's very friendly with a high power screen.

If Epson is advertising a "laser" projector i wonder if it means another iteration of that combo of red LED and a blue laser split into two sources by a dichroic mirror with one source illuminating a phosphor spinning wheel that provides the green primary color.
If that is the illumination source employed by Epson i don't really see it as being "market disruptive" nor fulfilling the premise that so many videophiles have been waiting for so long : projectors with R/G/B laser light sources spec'd to last at least 30.000 hours and provide at least 1.000 lumens of onscreen brightness.

No we said except for the epson high end projector. Sony could have done it except they I expect did not have the budget to put a laser phospor hybrid into a new chassis and develop the new optical block.

Too many new threads to post in today. But I would imagine the answer is still the same. I don't think Epson will have an offset to their lens. It seems only certain DLP projectors do this to achieve higher contrast.

Count me as officially interested!

I guess I will either head to Epson or JVC first. The only problem with Epson is I can expect there to be a long line. If JVC has an offsite location, then it is easy to see the pjs.

Do you think the new Epson is likely to support 3D? These days I would think every new mid to high end projector would, but a few years ago I recall that they were not planning 3D support in the reflective technology pj (which never made it to market I think) that I think this one may be based around.

I don't care about 3D I sure hope JVC will have a true 4K projector rather than eshift
