Joe - Don't know if this would be something you would consider, but many people have had success at making thier own screens.

This can range from painting canvas to buying screen material from a manufacturer and making a frame.

For example you can buy the Stewart "Grayhawk" material only, then make your own frame and save quite a bit. Of course it would have to be a fixed screen and not the electric roll down style.

Check the "screens" forum for lots of good ideas if you are interested.

I have the opposite problem. I am very handy, so will have no problem making a great screen, I just can't find the "perfect" projector.

Stewart is currently not offering the Grayhawk material separately.
They also do not offer this in a sample or swatch.

I've herd good and bad regarding the dalite. Most said it was to dark.

Maybe someone with this material can post a response !

KBK makes some screen paint. He sent me a gray screen for testing and it was very good. It had built in color correction for dlp and it really worked.

I don't know about the rest of you but some of my favorite beers are quite expensive. For example Traquair House Scotch Ale is over $4.00 for a 10oz bottle!

PS: How much is Grayhawk material??

Alan:

I heard the first batch of Dalites had a gain of 0.6 and not 0.9 which was the intended design!

Did KBK mention whether his paint is radioactive or not?
(just kidding of course KBK)

I think you are correct regarding the gain issue.
I wish we could get a response from someone who owns this screen!

Bob, If it were a beer machine, I might consider.

I've seen both the Grayhawk and the DaLite. The second round of DaLite is much lighter than the first. The DaLite is a matte gray with very little obvious reflective gain.

The Stewart has more reflective gain.

Well, a beer machine would have more appropriate since we are talking about beer budgets.

Since I like boutique beer, my beer budget could actually be pretty high.

It doesn't help to get any more at this point, we've maxed out on stars.

Even so, of course some cynics would say that the number of stars is based on the number of six-packs consumed. Hence the term "Joe Six-pack". (This, of course, does not reflect my own habits.)

If so, 1000 stars = $6.99*1000 = $6990 for premium beer, more than the cost of a used DILA and screen.

If you do well enough on the used DILA, it could even be a low end Greyhawk. Note the relevance to the current topic.

I need to start drinking beer again. I've become a lover of good scotch, and have been known to spend $150 on a bottle. No wonder I can't afford a GreyHawk.

Seriously though, here's an interesting thread from a month or so ago when some of us talked about our homemade gray screens. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/005365.html

I know I'm a Stewart Grayhawk fan after seeing the picture quality of Dean McManis's 13 ft wide by 7 ft high microperforated screen!

However I came across this thread regarding Dalite's new high contrast screen. Anyone else with first hand experience viewing this new product who is using a LCD, DLP or Dila projector?
