I know we are all anxious for the arrival of the Panamorph some day. But for those of us now growing accustom to enjoying the virtues of the ATI player and the Radeon card (Gamma control and an HDTV quality image), must we go back to the softer washed out look of WinDVD when using the Panamorph?

It seems to me that if ATI always enforces square pixels, we can not stretch the image vertically (with YXY) to fill our 4:3 panels (assuming that's the reason most of us have ordered the Pannie in the first place). Have I got this wrong? Is there some way around this?

Right now we are getting a very stunning image (bugs not withstanding) even though we use a portion of the 4:3 panel for 16:9 or Widescreen. But will going to full resolution and stepping back to the WinDVD player look any better? I really hope I'm wrong about this.

The good news is that you'll still be able to use the ATI player with anamorphic movies after getting the Panamorph. However, you'll have problems with 4:3 and non-anamorphic movies.

The ATI player can unlock the aspect ratio, but only in fullscreen mode. In this mode it stretches everything to fill the screen, which is fine for anamorphic but not good for 4:3 or non-anamorphics. You also will be unable to use YXY with the ATI player + Panamorph combo.

Hopefully ATI will be able to release version 5 of the player before the Panamorph is out the door.
