Just out of curiousity, how many of these have been broadcast in HiDef (on HBO, etc)?

Hey, let's not get personal here! We are each entitled to our own perceptions of aesthetics, taste, and culture.

I'll bet you'd also call me a "loser" if the question was:

"What's your favorite color?"

and my response was

"18% gray."

By the way, thanks for putting this together!

Thanks for the mention Ken and your effort in compiling this list. That's quite a list! I have had the willpower to hold off on a collection until HD-DVD (being content with rental and HBO/Show-HD), but some of these might be coming home soon.

Avia? Sure, I guess if all you wanted was the video patterns.

However, how do you know if it's really set up well unless you use the video montage from Video Essentials? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

My pleasure - thanks for your contribution. I wonder how long we'll have to wait for DVD HD...

Gee Ken, you never said we could include a music based DVD as a favorite. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

How about Pink Floyd The Wall? I'm suprised that didn't get mentioned.

Also, as honorable mention, I'm a big fan of 12 Monkeys. One of the best early DTS DVDs around, IMO.

Ok as promised, here is the tally from the survey of all time favorite movies. Many took the step to actually commit to ONE all time favorite. Thank You. Others simply could not resist or in some cases are blatant rule breakers (these are the kids I always hung out with in school). Fortunately for these folks, one of the goals of this survey is to provide a fairly comprehensive list of movies (from the Experts!) that 1) a newbie can use to get started or 2) an experienced HT buff can use to fill in the collection. So thanks to those rule breakers we have lots to choose from.

I was mostly after those movies that have emotional impact on the lister, not necessarily the one they thought the best made movie. Reading the postings, I think that's exactly what we got. I was amazed at the diversity, evne as those who posted late were listing ones that had not been previuosly mentioned.

I pulled together the results to form 4 categories.
1) All Time Favorites - Those that truly chose 1 favorite.
2) Honorable Mentions - For those who expressed a very close 2nd or perhaps who's all time favorite changed.
3) Multiple Favorites - These were those listed as a group of favorites (anything more than 1) or those who listed in order, I put 2 thru N in this list with number one going to the All Time Favorites category.
4) Music DVD's - some listed a music dvd on the side - I captured those in this category.

With these four categories, every listing is covered, no movie that anyone listed is left out to give a complete list of great movies to strive for. Each category is in alphabetical order with ('number') for number of repeat listings. A * means Amazon.com says it's not yet available in DVD. A *? means Amazon.com couldn't find it in DVD or VHS.

There are a few, I was surprised not to see including:
Caddy Shack
Cleopatra
Dune
Midway
The Big Chill
Th Ten Commandments
The Vikings
When Harry Met Sally

Here is a synopsis of the results:
All Time Favorites winners
It's a Wonderful Life (3)
Lawrence of Arabia (2)
Schindler's List (2)
all others had one vote

Honorable Mention winner
The Usual Suspects

Lawrence of Arabia was the overall winner (8) total listings; but usually listed as part of a top 10 list or group.

For listers:
The loser without without even thinking about it was the dude who listed the Avia disk. He was joking of course and wins as the best loser answer - I like it! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

The winner - without peer was ManE, who listed:
The home video we made that captured the last words that my daughter spoke from age 3 until last summer at age 11.

The Holy Grail was pretty good too.

We all had to pause a bit before moving on - thank you ManE

I hope you all enjoy the listing and find it useful for your own purposes. We are lucky indeed to be part of a hobby that carries so much meaning for each of us, and a great forum to exchange that meaning with others -

thanks to all contributors

One of THE reigning champs for quality content.. but not image quality DVD's, is the photo-tour of the planet "Baraka". I seriously doubt there is a single person on this forum that cannot see this footage and not be moved by the experience. I did not mention it, due to the fact that I was limited by ONE choice, and followed the rules. (HIGHLY unusual for me)

Filmed in 70mm shot, over seven years, in 24 countries.

This REALLY needs a good transfer. It is amongst the BEST you will ever see.

Believe it or not.. understanding how it's flaws interact with your PJ/HTPC set-up will allow you to figure out what is going on with your system, as you slowly correct it's problems and behavior. One of the only films that holds up to such repeated viewing, and scrutiny, WITHOUT eventually making you vomit all over your shoes from having to see it again... 'Content is King'.

I've seen large parts of it aleast 300 times, and parts of it about 5-600 times.

The panning and imagery are PERFECT (in combination with the processing flaws to 'figure out' what is going on with HTPC systems and their associated design parameters.

Simply said?.. a 'perfect' disc is USELESS in the extreme for helping you figure out these things.

thanks ken - I'll list it in the Honorable mention section. I did find it on Amazon, decided to order it and check it out. According to one of the reviewers, there is only one 70mm film remaining; seems odd, but if true, they should definitely make very high quality transfer while they can (for future HD production)

thanks again

ken

That's the thing about Baraka. If you 'Grok' it, all other movies, no matter what they are, (Laurence of Arabia, It's a wonderful Life, Gladiator, Braveheart, whatever, I don't care...) are like a sack of wet potatoes in comparison.

I'm not trying to pick on those movies. If you feel I am, (dear reader) you are merely projecting your own reasoning (or lack of) upon mine. Baraka is in a leauge of it's own.

BTW, the cover itself states 70mm, not like the Amazon reviews, which mention 65mm.

Just a follow up note on Baraka. I sent MPI Media an inquiry about the DVD's lack of anamorphic content. Others may wish to help confirm that there is a market. Here is their response:

Hi:

They might be doing a anoramic edition in September sometime but we have no exact release dates or information on this.

Please keep an eye on our website for any new releases.
