Sony VPL-VW65ES or JVC RS 400/X5000

Hello,

I am seriously tossing between the 65 and either the X5000 or 7000.
I went to demo the 5000 against the 7000 today. I wasn't all that impressed with the 5000, with e-shift on there was just way to much image noise for my taste and the shadow details were not as impressive I though it would be, My 40ES is much sharper looking. The 7000 on the other hand was quite impressive and had minimal noise present. I then went to demo the Sony 520ES and while it had a little worse black detail it had no inherent image noise whatsoever on upscaled content and displayed a very natural looking image. Since that is out of my budget I am seriously considering the 65ES, I would get it Isf calibrated. I am really not sure what to do, I wasn't all that impressed with the 5000 but the 7000 is more than I am prepared to pay right now, on the other hand I am also not sure whether I really need HDR and UHD capability for the next 6 months or so when I can upgrade again. Also I use the PJ for about 30% gaming as well so that is an important factor too. I can get the 65 and the 5000 for the same price. Really can't make up my mind.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Panasonic DMP-UB900 Anthem MRX-720 + 2x 2 channel Yamaha = 7.1.4, Martin Logan Motion 40 fronts, Martin Logan Motion FX rears, Martin Logan Motion 30 centre, Full Atmos, 4 x Martin Logan Motion 2 on ceiling Atmos, Martin Logan Balanced force 210 as the beast. Epson LS10000 in bat cave, 120" screen, STAX-3170 earspeakers, HTPC, PS4, PS3, Amiga 500 etc..

Given your uncertainty around HDR & UHD and that you can afford to upgrade again in 6 months, why not just wait 6 months when it should all be much clearer? Also, from everything I've heard the difference between the 400 & the 500 is often hard to spot and is in the form of deeper blacks and more contrast. I'd suggest the issues you saw with the 400 were due to the setup.

Thanks, I've sold my 40ES so I need to get something else ASAP. I am certain that I want HDR and UHD however not sure I need them right now. The biggest uncertainty I have with the JVC are gaming lag and long HDMI switching times and loud fan noise compared to the Sony.

Both the 400 and 500 were calibrated and the visible difference was rather large.

If gaming lag is an issue then I think going with the Sony is a good decision, 140ms on the JVC it too long for serious gaming.

RS400 isn't going to be any noisier than an RS500 so I would chalk that one up to a wrong setting or bad calibration. I went from an Epson 5030 which is on par with your 40ES and the sharpness of these JVC is much better.

Well I've got he X5000/RS400 and its all calibrated and am very happy even with the gaming lag but the issue I am facing is motion, it gives me a headache when gaming.
