They went from ~0.95" on the Qualia 004 to ~.63" in the Ruby and Pearl, it doesn't seem out of the question that the next generation panels would be "smaller". The impact on lens cost would therefore be minimal. Of course brightness might suffer.
I attended a meeting at Sony San Diego about a year a half ago. A Sony
Physicist who worked on the development of the SXRD process stated
that the .61 inch SXRD panel was the smallest they could use using current
technology of that time and still work with existing optics. There was a comment
that there could be larger panels for other applications... So not sure if the next
panel will be smaller- I say it is more likely to be larger and used for "higher" end
projectors while they continue to optimize the yield on the .61 inch SXRD for
lower cost solutions...
