Welcome to LAS VEGAS!

Does anyone sleep here? Nope

Yes VEGAS is totally over the top and if you've never been to CES try to get here next year! You wont ever forget it.

Now, I have limited time here so I'm going to try to show you some of the products that I think are amazing. Yes, there are tons of standard products here but I'll try to cover those that go to the next level.

First of all THANK GOD FOR 1080P! I don't know how many displays I've seen over the years that simply look like a piece of junk just because the source material is standard stuff. With HD-DVD and BluRay these displays are capable of really showing What they can do. Because of this, almost everyone makes a flat panel over 100 now. Simply Awesome. But These two formats time may be limited and the war might be a deathblow for both of them. What am I talking about? Prices of the players and everyone's talking about downloading this content from the internet. The computer geeks will likely dominate in the end.

Now on to the products and I'll try to keep adding new products as I see em.

Let me start with DLP. Yes you heard that right
New prototype RPTV looked fabulous. 100,000:1 and LED.

Sony OLED! WOW WOW WOW! They have these little displays that are about 12 and ¼ inch thick. 1,000,000:1 contrast. Yes that's right simply breathtaking! Please Sony Make a 100 model

Flat panels everywhere. From here on out it's gonna be a price war. What do you need with one of these? A digital sound bar. These things are showing up everywhere and if you haven't heard one yet you are in for a treat. Increadible! 5.1 sound from 1 speaker.
Here's Yamahas

Best Flat panel and biggest at the show so far is the Sharp 108 LCD . Absolutely Beautiful.

Finally the Toshiba HD-XA2 HD-DVD. 1080P and HDMI 1.3

Plasmas Plasmas Plasmasthey all look the same. Except Pioneer's new prototype. They claim it's unmeasurable but after talking to the engineers they let the beans spill by telling me their equipment they measured with wasn't good enough but it's over 20,000:1. It showed! The blacks were remarkable. Often as black as the casing and the black bars on 2.35 stuff were unnoticeable. Plus 1080p

LG made a slick new wall mounted DLP. Great for small rooms and threw a hell of an image!

Screens?
Da-Lite's Acoustic Imager caught my eye with speakers built into the frame. Sounded Great!

What's hot this year? Portable video players. Ipod, Zoon and yes Hasbro.
Their Massively Mini Media Player was awesome and very cheap. Great for your kids!

Also check out the Archos. They were the first to bring out MP3 players and they are doing it again with what is bound to cause a major stir to the market very soon.

Want an awesome programmable remote but sick of pointing IR units. The URC's MX-3000 is the ticket. Color and RF. Now you can go anywhere in the house. Very light and Very nice. I recently got the TX-1000 now I wish I would have got the 3000.

Star of the show for Video Processingthe Gennum VXP. It does everything and is simply awesome. The Marantz has it, and the new JVC RS-1

I didn't quite see all 2700 exhibitors today so more tomorrow. There's not a lot of new front projection stuff here to write about but I'm seeking out the JVC RS-1 tommorrow. Rumor has it they are hiding it at Ceasers Palace.

Again everyone has a 100 inch flat panel. LG has 100 LCD and here's Samsungs 102 Plasma

Lots of excitement over the new LG dual player. HD-DVD and BluRay. Looks like a nice unit and they are kicking it off with a big stage showThe Blues Brothers

Focus Enhancements is making a wireless video streamer. This thing will do up to 720p wirelessly. If you cant run wires this may be for you.

Screens
Vutec has a new masking system for the Silverstar. Very nice. Masking is very thin and almost touches the screen. Very low profile and the only ones that provide beveled frames. Their mechanics always work flawlessly

The new Stewart masking system for their Cinemascope curved screen worked awesome. Very nice product if you are using an anamorphic lens

I saw the JVC RS1 at the Caesers today!

RS1 vs Pearl was amazing. Those that have ordered the RS-1 will be very happy. As one person said in the private viewing with the JVC boys...Time to sell the G90

New Sony product? Nope not yet. I confirmed this with the Sony boys at Bally's where they were only showing the HS60. No new product yet. They dont understand where the rumors are coming from

They did say follow our release history....

NAB? maybe CEDIA?

more later

Off to the AVS Party for now

5.1 from 1 speaker? Not to play sceptic but I'll believe it when I hear it. Bose claims to do something similar with more but I can tell you from first hand experience (father owns it) that it falls incredibly short in that endeavor. Better than a TV speaker, but not anywhere close to even a budget 5.1 setup.

This is the PJ forum though so I won't dwell on that. Can't wait for the new 1080P PJ announcements!

These have been out for a while now and have gotten amazing reviews from numerous sources. Unlike Bose, Yamaha's products are actually very well engineered and do exactly what they claim.

Very dissapointed. Why did they cut the revolution down in half? It was originally supposed to output at 2160p.

The Soundbars have been used for sometime. I have one. It works well. The only limitation is that it relies on the room to work properly. Open floorplans do not lend themselves to great performance.
Oh, and I would NEVER put Bose in the same category as a real audio company like Yamaha.

Agreed.
I heard the Yamaha at last years CES and it's very effective IF you have a very live room so the reflections can "do their thing"...

Many companies make these digital sound bars now. If set up properly they are an absolute must for flat panels. So far all the ones I have heard have totally blown me away.

BTW more material above

I heard the YSP-1 at BB and was not impressed. May have been the open space though.

Seemed very processed/ineffective/hot spotty..

OK, not bad for the first 2007 CES Booth Babe pic. Now go over to the car audio section and get some pics there. That's where the real action is...............
Oh wait, AVS doesn't sell car audio, damn.

So, where was that 100,000:1 DLP prototype in your very first pic?

The 100000:1 dlp rtpv prototype is interesting but the number is not. Turn the LED arrays off and the on/off is infinate. What is the native contrast ratio, 5000:1? Then we can talk about brightness compression.

Buddy of mine has one of these mounted under his flat panel. It's actually an array of ~40 speakers inside that bar(!).

The surround field isn't half bad if you have installation constraints.

Sound bars have been around for about 1 1/2 years now. Some are designed to simulate five speakers, others the front three. The Polk is a 5 simulater (MSRP $800), the Mirage is a front three simulator (MSRP $1000), the Yamaha is a five, MSRP well over a $1000. They all need subs. Great for articulating mounted plasmas but remember you will need an accessory mount from the mount manufacturer to attach it to the mount.

What'S the point if you already have a 5.1 sytem. And if I had no such system I would buy a nice stereo speaker.

Just make great screens at great prices and I will take care of the sound

Gimmie laser and LEDs.....with low power consumption and infinite lifespan

Tryg,
On page #1 of your posts you show the LG an110, which has been missing here in the States but available in Europe. There was a very excited following of the reviews of this unique configuration. Now, it has reappeared and you were impressed-----MORE PLEASE!
Will LG finally offer this unit for sale here and if so what is the price and who will carry it?
Thanks for any additional info you can obtain.

Robert---

Thanks Tryg for giving us your impressions of the RS1.

Would you say that the differences between the Pearl and the RS1 were dramatic enough that you'd recommend to your clients/customers that they pass on a Pearl and wait on the RS1 instead?

Thanks.

You watch a Donnie Yen movie to watch what Donnie does best - kick-ass!
