What is the length of time for "should last"? My first lamp which came with the projector (the BHL-5009S) lasted about 800 hours. The replacement BHL-5009S which I purchased lasted about 2200 hours, fortunately I get these at dealer cost so the money wasn't as bad. I decided to try an Apex replacement for the third and it went out under the warranty period so they replaced it and the replacement has over 2000 hours with no problem, i run in the low power mode. I still think the factory BHL5009S is a better bulb but against this second Apex not that big of a difference from the OEM.

When should one replace an aging and dimming lamp in a projector? This is a rather personal question, of course.

In my case with my RS-1 I run a lamp until it dies or no longer lights reliably. Both have happened over the past 8 years. By die I mean the lamp has melted the glass at its base, tilted the filament off to one side, and no longer illuminates evenly (if at all)!

So far no lamp has blown-up within the projector. Knock-on-wood.

My image size is 180" at a throw distance of 27' and I use high lamp mode exclusively. I use my RS-1 daily, and way too often, having been early retired in 2008 from an automotive supplier and only worked about 1/4 of the time since. Not that I mind the free time. I presently have two spent lamps, plus one in the RS-1, and have returned under warranty or discarded at least 2 more.

As the lamps age and dim, I compensate first by changing the gamma settings from normal to B to C, etc. As desired, I also increase the contrast setting to restore some brightness; at the expense of crushing the whites somewhat. If this becomes insufficient then I change the HDMI input from full RGB to standard (or was it the otherway around) to bump up the black levels too from my HTPC and set top box tuner.

So when should one replace a lamp? If one is not interested in playing games with their projector, or stretching the lamp's lifespan, then I would replace the lamp when one starts wondering how much brightness my image has lost?

Hi all, very happy to join the family , with a used rs1 bought at a very good price , finally at my low budget reach:-)

I need your help for a couple of things;

1 - my model is an rs1 , BUT has motorized lens zoom and focus , do someone knows of some sort of hybrid version between rs1 and rs2 ? In the service menu I get this info: what model exactly do I have ??

2 - I have a problem with interlaced signals: when using 1080 with ps4 or mediaplyer or sky decoder, I get in dark zones a strange effect of hundreds of very thin vertical green lines , any advice ? In 720p or 1080p the problem does completely disappear so I think is some sort of problem with the internal scaler ?

Thanks for you help
Marco

To my knowledge the RS1 never had a motorized zoom (I could be wrong). Are you sure it doesn't have an after market lens attached to it? Maybe for a 2.35 screen?

Not really sure. Maybe a region area problem. If possible I would like to see a pic of the PJ. Something doesn't seem right. I'm not at home to check mine but I'm pretty sure the model has rs1 in it. What country of origin did this come from? Italy? That model number doesnt come up when I google it.

I'm wondering if it's not an ntsc vs pal issue.

That's the pj . Everything is like any other rs1 I've seen in the web, except lens, that has not manual rings to move but is motorized in the same way as rs2 I think ( with the remote in test mode, press right button for 2 seconds and zoom/focus menu does pop up )

Hi raoul

There is a thread here on fans:

Problem With My JVC DLA-RS2

It looks like you can order them directly from JVC, or try a DIY project to add a generic fan

....and FYI everything I have read (basically all threads I could find on RS1/RS2 lamps) indicates that they are the same fans/lamps for both the RS1 and RS2. If this is inaccurate, hopefully someone can jump in

Attached is the service menu from my RS1 taken today. I updated the firmware back in 2007 to 062, and this is a United States marketed machine.

Your machine is the first RS1 that I am aware of with a motorized lens. Our model is almost the same designation. Difference may be regional.

thanks a lot for the reply. I'm quite confused anyway.. model number and software version are totally different, it seems in all aspects an rs2 model, except for the name on the top cover !

Could you please verify these 2 things? in the menu of your rs1 ?
- is there a vertical stretch function ? ( for anamorphic lenses, ) in Source ?

- In the setting menu, do you have a gamma curve adjustment screen ( the one with the graph? )?

These i think are the only differences i found in the manuals between rs1 and rs2 and i have them both but i cannot check if really are not present in rs1 menu..

Is anyone aware of some other subtle differences i could check to really understand what the hell did i buy ??? :-) :-)

Thanks again !

My RS1 definately does NOT have a vertical stretch option. I had to buy an OPPO bluray player just for that function. You have a 1 of a kind my friend!

Doh ! That's very strange isn't it? Thanks a lot !
So now i can argue it's an rs2 for the hardware part but I suppose there's no way to know if also the d-ila panels are the upgraded ones ..

Anyway i'm enjoying it a lot , i also have a lot more recent optoma dlp 3D pj but not even near this image quality and flexibility ( no lens shift at all, less zoom, a bit louder fans )
After all this jvc was a 6/7k $ some year ago vs sub 1k of the optoma .. There's a reason :-)
