Yeah, it must be nice to have a quiet room.

It sounds like a JET PLANE in the back of my room.

That RS1 is a nice little unit.

Like any case of trying to compare one pj against another.

Actually, while I enjoy the screen shots on projectorreviews too, it appears to their reviewer, Art, seems to be placing a dubious level of emphasis on them. He often seems to me to be evaluating projector differences based on his screen shots. I know he obviously actually evaluates the actual projectors too but...

For instance, in his review of the JVC RS1 he actually measures the luminance difference of screen shots themselves from the RS1 and the Sony Pearl, and determines the JVC has much better black levels. "the Sony isn't even close when it comes to black levels, " and "the JVC black levels are 60% lower."

The conclusion that the JVC black levels kill the JVC black levels is seriously at odds with pretty much every professional review I read (or account by people who have had them side by side, calibrated). I certainly have nowhere else seen someone measure the JVC as 60 percent lower black levels vs the Pearl, when measuring the actual displays calibrated side by side. The consensus is generally that the black levels were extremely close between the JVC and Pearl - essentially a toss-up - but rather that the JVC was able to allow objects within darkness to be brighter, due to not using a dynamic iris.

So, while I like screen shots as much as the next guy, the emphasis of screen shots on that review site leaves me a bit dubious about some of the conclusions.

What is your impression of the Panasonic after seeing the RS1?

The RS1 has better blacks. That's pretty much it.

Were the RS1's black levels significantly better and aproaching CRT (as many claim)?

I do enjoy seeing screenshots but I also want to see the various mixes of equipment being used to produce these images. Which projector onto which screen and if your leveraging any special video processing in between. Oh yeah...and your source. I guess the key thing to understand is that unless we're all using the same digital camera with the same setting these screenshots are quite subjective. All that aside...it is sharpening my photography skills.

Were you using a some sort of VP on it to apply CMS? It looks really really good.

I suppose that you could use screenshots to compare projectors - BUT only if the same camera was used, same settings (high resolution), set upon a stable tripod, left unmoved, same ambient lighting in room, same screen, same still image. This way, you would have a control with respect to the camera. The only variable would be the projector. Even with that set-up, you would still only be comparing those two projectors and from a limited perspective.

Oh yeah.. and no "post" modification of the images using any program (Photoshop... etc).

Catdaddy - WOW those may be some of the closest I've seen to the actual reference:

They are very good, but not CRT.

A properly calibrated CRT after gamma bump has blacks that are OUT OF THIS WORLD.

My VP50 was driving it, but that's all.

All of my screenshots are untouched as well. No photoshop, nothing.

I simply resize and post except for my latest ones, I've been cropping the 2:35 image, then reducing size by 50%, then post.

VERY VERY NICE!!!!!!!!

My Kodak Easy Share Camera has fixed shutter speeds, so I depending on how much light I need, switch back and forth between "Auto" and "Night Mode".

Thanks Owl. They dont really do the actual picture justice. I had to take those shots in iris 3. but Ill try night mode as that should be better since I can take those in iris 1. Also, those pirates shots were with a tripod and all of the shots I am taking are fully stretched out through panamorph lens to 128" diagonal, too.

Im not using dynamic/ramped up contrast/sharpness settings or anything, just my normal viewing ones is probably why they look a little tame.

Where is that "reference" Pirates picture you have from?
