Fortunately, between MFG test samples, and and a R&D expense account..It's all pretty cheap for me, otherwise I wouldn't buy it.

Haha, kinda. I want to be able to hook up any external antenna to it, since I usually carry my Silver Sensor with me. Not to mention the VHF bowtie.

That one on eBay looks interesting. A bit pricy, but I assume that's what a device like that would cost. Just need to find an SMA-to-F connector. I'll be thinking about it.

An interesting story of a mobile DTV battle overseas.

Japan’s Mobile TV Battle

http://www.techalps.com/wireless/jap...tv-battle.html

MediaFLO is failing here, but Japan is a very different market. Mobile DTV is already widespread in Japan as part of the ISDB-T standard which includes 1-seg for mobile.

However, ISDB-Tmm vs. MediaFLO are competing for (apparently) dedicated mobile RF channels (with multiple programs) in the upper VHF band (4-12 in Japan), that are being vacated when analog TV is shut-down next July.

I know that VHF isn't exactly preferred due to antenna concerns here and MediaFLO is UHF here, so it will be interesting to see how these perform on upper VHF for mobile devices in urban Japan.

Note that South Korea's MDTV standard (T-DMB) is also on upper VHF.

So got the unit today..after fixing the bad solder joints in the remote..it scanned the locals and came up running. More later as time permits.

So far , for a no-name off-brand unit, I'm pretty impressed. Give me a few days (or so) with it.

Yep - in the UK we ceased VHF TV broadcasts in both Band I and Band III in 1985. (The VHF stuff was our original 405 line B&W TV system aka 377i, and UHF Bands IV and V were only ever used for 625 - and PAL colour eventually)

Band I (aka Lower VHF?) was re-assigned for non-broadcast use, but chunks of Band III (aka Upper VHF?) are used in the UK for digital radio using the DAB COFDM standard.

AIUI T-DMB is an evolution of DAB - using the same modulation and RF system as DAB - but carrying video as well as audio (and allowing more modern audio codecs than DAB does)

AIUI High VHF (aka Band III) is quite popular for these kinds of services - though I'm not sure how good reception REALLY is...

It works! Watching KMEX-MH1 with the On-Air GT right now! Sadly, it's 4:3 stretched to 16:9, however. There are some artifacts as well, but it looks like the laptop is going to be making a road trip soon.

Amazing, that someone figured out a way to make this work with old hardware.

Attached is a cap showing the KMEX M/H streams. Too bad they are in stretch-o-vision. I will have to see if there's a way to get them back to 4:3 or hopefully, they can do 16:9 as they should. Note that the two "monitors" are swapped. Looks like it can support 3 at once.

It's not w/o bugs, it keeps disappearing on me when I minimize it, etc. (it won't restore)

And oh yeah, they want $$$ after 7 days. Feels too much like a Beta to start handing over funds, but it isn't too steep.

For $12, it's not bad. Once I test it with an actual MH station (maybe WRAL), I fully intend to support them in their efforts.

I've got it working on my Artec. Falcon_77 has it working on his OnAir GT. As long as it works with BDA drivers, it should support this software, though Pinnacles and ATIs may be problematic.

My hunch is they are just decoding the IP data in the ATSC stream, not the actual M/H ensembles..Trip will understand this.

Are you saying they're looking at the MH PID and trying to parse that? I'm trying to be sure I understand. Because that's my suspicion as well, since I was told there are things about MH reception that would have to be done in hardware.

Yes, that is what I believe they are doing. If so, using the HVR with this software will give poor performance in a mobile environment. Which may explain why the off-brand 7" mobile TV I got from China gave such poor performance on the road..I suspect it really isn't a true M/H receiver.

I tried this out and I have a few issues, one of which is that from time to time the video will keep repeating. This is even on my fixed antenna setup at home... something else is afoot here. And sometimes it will just plain lock up. Stopping and starting the video fixes this but it happens way too often.

At $12 I might buy it just for posterity but I'm still going to get a real M/H receiver when I can.
