Is there any way to upconvert an svideo cable connected to a direct tv receiver to a higher definition, such as, 1080i/p WITHOUT using a receiver. Is there any type of cable that can be connected to the svideo

No, s-video itself can't output more then 480i, you'd need a scaler of some kind to make it any higher, I wouldn't expect major improvements in PQ either if you did scale it up.

If you have a fairly recent TV, it should be upconverting it's s-video input to whatever it's native resolution is anyway.
