So I recently got my first HDTV. We've had DirecTV throughout the house for almost ten years, but of course it's been the plain old SD service the whole time. I of course want to upgrade to HD now to get the most out of my new TV. I know that along with the HD service I need a new dish and receiver to watch HD programming. But there's also two other old TVs in the house that don't need the high-def. So my question is, with HD service do all the receivers in the house have to be replaced to continue to receive programming, or will the D12's still work with the new dish?

This is pretty much the make-or-break factor, as I can't afford to replace every receiver in the house, at least not all at once.

Thanks very much for any help!

Direcxt TV is still broadcasting SD content in order to insure customers do not have the problem you are worried about.

I have two HD and two SD Directv boxes in my house.

You will need a new dish in order to access all of the potential HD content. You may also find you need more cabling runs, particularly if you upgrade to an HD DVR which requires two cable runs back to the dish. Also, if you have any OTA signals diplexed onto a Directv cable, it will have to get its own run if you have to have B-Band converters installed at your HD box.

It can get a bit complicated with all the possible variations...

I'm not aiming for a DVR unit. I can manage whatever possible wiring changes would be needed so long as the other existing receivers can remain and still work with the new dish and the HD programming won't interfere in some way.

You will be fine with a new HD receiver, and a new dish for your HD set and the older sets will keep working just like they are.

Just make sure you don't get an SWM capable dish. You want the standard AU9-S slimline model so it's still compatible with your older SD receivers.

The OP mentioned his SD receivers were D12s so they will work fine with the SWM system. Other older receivers won't.
If you upgrade to HD through DirecTV, they will install the correct dish as part of the upgrade, plus new cabling if you need it.
