I have a 2 1/2 year old 42" LCD Vizio SV421XVT. A week ago the speakers could not be turned off with the menu. I was able to toggle the off but sound still came out. I was trying to use my home theatre so I turned the sound down completely on the tv. Then a couple of days later the remote stopped working and so did the cable universal remote. I talked with Vizio and they suggested removing the batteries etc but nothing worked. One tech suggested replacing the IR sensor. So I ordered and installed the new IR sensor and still nothing. Also, before the new IR sensor sometimes I was unable to turn off the tv with the on/off switch on the set so I had to unplug it. The tv works and has a great picture but this remote thing is inconvenient...any suggestions?

Do I understand that the Mute button on the Vizio TV remote does not work and that the with your cable remote set in tv mode that the Mute button does not work either?

Yes...the remote is unresponsive. The mute does not work and the cable remote is now connectly directly to the receiver so I can control the volumn etc. I talked with Vizio this afternoon and they think it may be the motherboard but without testing it they can't be sure.

You might try the Master Reset Procedure for a Vizio 47" LCD... might work for you too... I just had to use it.

With TV OFF, press and HOLD, for 10-15 sec, both Input/Source and Vol- buttons on TV (not remote).

Do you have a possible source of IR interference in the room? Fluorescent lights maybe?

When using the TV remote's Mute button does the Mute symbol show up on the TV screen?
If yes how are you ensuring that audio is going to the TV through the receiver?

There are no fluorescent lights in the room. No the mute symbol does not show up nor can I control the the sound with the tv remote. I have changed the setup running the output from the cable box to the amp and that works. Still can not turn the set on or off by any remote.

Update...I ordered a motherboard from Vizparts and received it yesterday. I installed the new board and that took care of everything. The remote works, the on/off works and so does the sound issues. It works like a new set.
