I'll offer a suggestion and an opinion.
1) figure out how or why two HDMI cables "went bad". (critters chewing cables? Construction work that damaged cables?)
2) if this configuration worked before, I'd not choose to add a HDMI splitter. A wall plate is your choice for cosmetic purposes only and is your option.
You may have a problem finding a 50' High Speed HDMI cable for 1080p (at an affordable/practical price from a "reputable" manufacturer)..
