I just got HD digital cable and lo and behold - everything so far is 480p. Does this mean I need to get satellite TV or an antenna for higher resolution? I'm not surprised but I am disappointed.

Silly question but do you have an HDTV? I'd check with your cable provider first to see if your cable box is setup correctly as well as your tv.

Do you have HD or just digital cable? Just because something is digital doesn't mean it's HD.

If you're sure you have an HDTV, HD box, & have it connected via HDMI or Component video cables the most likely culprit is the settings on the box. Quite often the cable company recycles those units back out into the world without resetting them. The last person who had it may have set the resolution to 480p. Tune to a known HD broadcast (i.e. Sportscenter) and check the resolution again. If it is still 480p then it is probably the settings. Without knowing the provider or the model of the set top box I wouldn't be able to help you any further. Call your cable company.

You'll also be shocked by how many people hook HD devices to their HDTV with COMPOSITE cables then wonder why they aren't seeing HD.

The problem was something even simpler, most HD channels are past channel 900! And they don't show up in TV guide.

Yes HD channels are different than the SD signals. So you're saying you expected your SD signals to turn into HD signals because you got HD service? You didn't realize they put the HD signals in a different place?
