I have a 46" Samsung LN46C600 and have been playing with an OTA antenna in my attic. I installed a channel master CM 4228 UHF antenna with a Antennas Direct CPA-19 Pre-Amp. If I aim the antenna just right I can get a clear WGBH CH2.1(19). My worse channel ends up being WSBk CH38.1 that comes in with some pixilation during the day. For some reason reception at night is better than the day.

The problem is I simply can't get my Samsung to get WCVB CH5.1(20), but if I hook up a Hauppauge WinTV 950Q USB Tuner it easily grabs channel WCVB CH5.1(20) no problem.

Any idea why one tuner can grab it and one can't?

Any way I can get the Samsung to pull in channel 5 without mounting the antenna to the roof? (its not an option, just like watching Pats games OTA and don't want to mount on 3rd floor roof)

My TV fool report is....

Just trying to figure out if I can get that last channel and see if its worth even using the amp, doesn't seem to do much for reception.

Title edited.

Walking the fine line between jaw-dropping and a plain ol' yawn.

Never a fan of attic installs, lots of things can interrupt the signal. That being said, do you have splitters running in the house? Every 2-way splitter 1/2's the signal strength, maybe by the time the signal gets to your TV, it's just not strong enough for the turner.

I'm up here in Epping NH and pick all those stations with no problem and my distances from the towers are almost the same as you. I do know that my Hauppauge 1600 does a better job of picking up stations than my older LG HDTV, not all tuners are created equal, some better than others.

For my setup I run from my roof antenna (a crappy LAVA HD2805...didn't know better at the time, but does the job) into a 4-way amplifier that feeds 4 devices...this setup works great for me and signal levels are fairly strong on all the TV's & Hauppauge...always trying to minimize use of splitters.

Any idea why one tuner can grab it and one can't?

The tuners have different capabilities, especially in how well they can correct an impaired or degraded signal. Usually, it's due to some sort of multi-path and attics can be real hell-holes for multi-path.
see if its worth even using the amp, doesn't seem to do much for reception.

If your signal power levels are within a certain range, an amplifier will neither help nor harm reception. Usually, that means you didn't need one in the first place.

Attics take patience to see if you can find a spot where everything happens to come together well enough to work. Keep trying different mounting locations.

This could be adjacent channel interference from the nearby WSBE on Ch 21. The Samsung tuner may be more susceptible to this.
