I noticed that one of the upgrades is for "spot beam support". What is this? What will my 1080 do different with "spot beam support"?

I'll take a wild guess that it fixes the problems with locals not showing in the guide after a reboot/rescan for 45 minutes to an hour. (purely speculation on my part)

one new satellite DirecTV is using (and more forthcoming) allows them to re-use frequencies to different regions in the US. Another way to look at this is that they will point the local networks to your region on a specific set of frequencies then re-use those same frequencies to point local networks to another region in the US. Thats the skinny on spot beam.

I remain skeptical based on the fact that there STILL is nothing showing up in the "future updates" section. That to me was the first warning last time that we weren't going to get the update in time. If you see nothing in that box, you can rest assured that nothing is coming immediatley.

What channel should I power down on again to make sure I am capable of receiving the update?

Zeke..
Anything on the 101 satellite should do, but a lot of us stick with 201, since that's what the CSR has you tune to when updating or initalizing your system.

We'll know better when it actually comes down. When some get it and some don't, the process of elimination will begin.

I hate to be the prophet of doom & gloom, but here it is Monday with an update scheduled for Wednesday and there STILL is nothing showing in the future updates section of the software. Who wants to bet this won't happen once again?

Ken..
I'll bet if we all take down our dishes and unhook and box up our units and set them in a closet, somewhere, the update will come down, but only one time. It's the whole tree-falls-in-a-forest theory. <G>

The seemingly ill-informed gentleman that responded to my email had this to say (paraphrased):

ME: How do I receive the upgrade if I am not a DirectTV subscriber?
Zenith: You can download it from DirecTV sometime in November.
ME: I am NOT a DirecTV subscriber. Is there another way to get it?
Zenith: If you are not a satellite subscriber, you don't need the update.
ME: I may not need the update for satellite purposes, but I WANT the update regardless, to address other issues.
Zenith: As long as you are hooked up to the satellite, you can receive the update and your issues will be addressed.

*We are obviously not speaking the same language, are we??
Zenith tech support either 'does not know' if the update can be obtained without-satellite, or 'will not say' (if they do know). IMO

Keith..
Looks like you'll have to wait until the update's obviously running, find a friend with DirecTV, hook it up to his dish, configure it (you don't have to actually subscribe, but you will need to install the access card and configure the unit for satellite reception) and leave it over night.

Stinks that they don't get what you're asking, but that will do the trick and save you hours on the phone with tech support.

Ah yes, so now it's "sometime in November". Here we go again. I'm seriously doubting will see this upgrade this YEAR! This is really getting absurd.

Again I'll be the conspiracy theorist... Why would they give us the update now when so many of us bought our boxes when they first came out and thus will be losing any warranty options coming up soon. Simply wait until warranties start expiring, then do the upgrade. When people finally see how crappy the update is they won't have any options. Ok conspiracy theorist in me going away...

Whether I get my 520 or the DTV1080 update first is starting to get exciting. It's a closer race than I thought.:)

On the other hand, they really want to sell some flat-panel pla$ma$. If their own boxes don't work that well, that's another sale they miss. Has to be embarrassing to see one of their TVs being fed by a Samsung (which is the case at one local retailer, here).

Don't get me wrong. I'm in love with my 1080. The workarounds for the guide problems work beautifully. It functions quite well, otherwise. I hate Panarama to begin with, so I don't use it.

WOW! Just took a casual look at my 1080's "System" menu, and under the Software Info section it now lists software version 2.10 under the Next Software Version header! It even supplies a date and time for the release (this is NOT a joke)....

01:59 MDT on August 23.... 2003!

I'm not making this up. The system report is honestly saying that it'll be August of next year before the patch comes out. I can't believe it!

This is worse than that being shown that preview trailer of The Matrix Reloaded this past May (which doesn't even come out until May of next year!!!). This is the tease to end all teases!

Doh! You beat me to it!! I was going to post that my 1080 is showing a coming software update, too!! This is great news (finally). :D

I meant to say this is great news if the 2003 date is wrong, and it was finished for release and download in Aug. of 2002!!

The date can't possibly be right. Could this be an early or late April fools joke by DirecTV? Maybe the download really is around the corner! I'm just not sure what corner that is.

Now that you mention it, it seems like the date in the "next version" field would be a build date, not distribution date.

Maybe they were so focused on QA of the software, they missed the incorrect date (year). Regardless, it looks like something is happening... soon

Now the date changed to 12/26/03. So it seems they are working on it now.

----ON EDIT--- NOW THE DATE IN THE UPDATE BOX IS 10/30/02 - that is early tomorrow morning so it looks like this update is really going to happen.

Thanks everyone. I've been on the computer and before I left the TV the software update block was blank. Then I read here it says "10/30/2002 3:59AM" and it does!

I'll tune the receiver to 201 and keep my fingers crossed as I sleep.
