Okay guys, I did this deal and received the Samsung receiver today. I placed an order late Friday evening, the 22nd, and received the receiver today via FedEx, the 26th. I asked the guy on the phone if there was a way to get me the Samsung one, not the Hughes, but he said there was nothing he could do; no note, no nothing, so I just took my chances.

I dunno the deal between D* sending 'em or the installer bringing it, but I'd have D* send it because it seems like right now, they're shipping Samsungs. There is a $25 shipping charge that is non-refundable. =(

Can't wait till Saturday!

Is it possible to get this deal and not activate the receiver? Just use it for OTA?

I mean I'm already a customer with two Direct Tivos.

I don't want to disconnect either to connect the HDTV receiver. I'm not sure I'd even subscribe to the HDNet/DiscoveryHD/ESPNHD package.

So the idea would be to watch OTA on it.

Or maybe I could switch back and forth between one of the Tivos and the HDTV receiver? I know you can activate/deactivate hardware and programming packages on your account on their web site.

wco81, your commitment is only minimal. I doubt they will force anything other than basic TC on yuo and since you are an existing customer that's only a $5/month mirroring charge.

Keep in mind that D* is subsidizing these units and they aren't just gonna throwaway $200 for you to let it sit in a closet. They want that extra $5/month out of you, hehe.

WCO81,

I should have mentioned in my post that part of the deal is a one year commitment to the D* HD package at $10.99 per month, first month free. So no way can you get this deal and not activate and not take HD tier (at least based on what I was told).

Chris, this was not mentioned to me. In fact, I was only told that I was expected to have a one-year commitment to basic service (a la Total Choice). Of course, it would be a moot point to have an HD receiver and not have HD service.

Just as an update, I received my receiver today and got the Samsung. Rolled the dice in a way. So that was cool at least. We'll see how the install goes this weekend.

I activated my Sammy today and when talking to the CSR, she only stated that I was committed to 12 months of TC. Nothng was said about the HD package until I asked for it (which for some reason surprised her).

I know the installer called her and gave her the model/serial/access card numbers then handed the phone to me to activate the receiver. She did say the installer didn't tell her it was an HD unit (shouldn't the model number flag that in their computer?) but even after informing her it was, nothing was said about being committed to the HD package (or getting the first month free).

WOO HOO!!! My wife just called, and Fed Ex just dropped off the Sammy. The install is set for Saturday.

FYI - I called Sunday evening to order the package, and I asked for a note to be attached to the order regarding my preference for the Sammy. No idea if that mattered or not since it seems everyone so far is getting them.

Good luck to everyone else!

Being that Hughes owns DirecTV, I am surprised that D* is shipping so many Samsung units. Maybe they got a good deal on a large order for them, or maybe the Hughes is a known difficult/troublesome unit. Anyway, let's all make out like bandits. :)

I hope you guys live closer to where they ship from cause I ordered mine on Friday like I said before. I'm just praying that the installer doesn't bring it. :(

I bought this receiver brand new, in the sealed box at CC for $300.00 (after mail-in rebate). You can get this for $300.00. Just check around.

WanMan,

Well, after setting up my box order and installation I asked the Service Rep if I had to order the HD package (which I intended to do anyway). She did pause to read something then said "yes". I then asked her when it would be activated and before she answered I said something like, "I guess I activate it at the time of installation" and again she agreed. Perhaps my prompts elicited the response I thought she would give. Anyway, moot point for me since I want the HD package anyway. Maybe its the one month free promotion that requires the 1 year sub?

I've been mulling going to D* for a while now. After reading this thread, I fell completely off the fence in my haste to get in on the bonanza. Signed up as a new customer to receive Tivo 2 room deal, to be installed Sep 5, and plan on ordering the HD upgrade about 5 minutes after I activate the system. Hopefully there will still be some of the Samsung dishes around at that time; I really need the RGB out.

Question - Can I set up the Sammy receiver to see what locals I can get in prior to the install? Or should I wait until the install and the activation of the receiver? I know it needs to be activated along with getting the new dish for the directv hd offerings, but what about for the locals?

ACRIBB: Which receiver did you get from CC? Tweeter, and others are still asking $499 for the sammy and $399 for the Hughes.

Set it to "no dish" in the installation menu. Then you can tune to the OTAs at will.

Another day and no Samsung box. :( I wonder if it has anything to do with me being in one of the six test markets. They eliminated my shipping charge and just charged handling I found out. I'm screwed!

I'm having the install done tomorrow afternoon. I received the Samsung thru FEDEX and one 3LNB dish 2 days later. I'm in the L.A. area and currently have the Samsung 150 with the RS Double bowtie antenna
which has worked pretty well just sitting on top of the receiver. My question
is should I install a rooftop antenna when the installer comes out tomorrow? RS has these clip on to dish ones, anyone have any experience or hear anything about these? The bowtie is a bit of an eyesore and I'm thinking I may pull in a more powerful signal. I live about 10 miles from Mt.Wilson with a direct visual line from my rooftop. Any comments?

Hey everyone that got the Samsung, did it come with a DVI cable?

I went to CC last night and they had a few open box Samsungs but they claimed that they did not come with a DVI cable - and that even the unopened boxes didn't have a DVI cable. And, of course they want $99 for a Monster Cable DVI cable.

Mine did come with a cable.

It's too short for any ceiling mounted applications though - unless your components are also mounted on the ceiling (oh wait I guess this isn't a projector only forum).

No. Some of us have good old fashioned :) direct view HDTV sets.

Well, last night when I got home from work FedEx had delivered the dish. I have not opened up either box (receiver, dish) as I like to play the legal aspect of 'it wasn't opened until you stepped into my home; I didn't break it'.

DON'T get a clip-on antenna. Also, don't buy any antennas from TERK. They're all overpriced, and many don't work well for OTA .

If your existing indoor antenna works but you don't like the looks of it, try moving it to the attic. Or get somwhat better-looking indoor antenna (that usually works), like the Zenith Silver Sensor.

Or, install an outdoor CM 3021 4bay bowtie in the attic or outdoors.
