The latest offer from D* for existing customers, you get a triple LNB dish + installation + HDTV receiver for $399. Unfortunately, the only receivers available are Hughes and Samsung. I was going to get Zenith 520. Is this Samsung worth saving $100? D* still offers free triple LNB dish + installation if you want to add HDTV. Of course, standard 12-month commitment still applies.

Thanks,

Oski, are you the Cal Oski? :)

Where do you see the Samsung for $399? I was thinking of buying at Magnolia who has it for $599 with dish installed, less $100 rebate, making it a net $499.

Oops...I noticed you said EXISTING customers...I would be a new customer...

Thanks

Jeff

Audio King (Ultimate Electronics) is running a $399 deal for new customers (don't know if it works for existing customers). For $399, you get a two-room setup (with one Hughes HD box), the triple LNB dish, and professional installation. I paid an extra $100 an substituted in the 520 instead of the Hughes.

Well I got that deal from directly from D*. I did not even bargain. It sounds like it is a new deal for existing customers to ease their pain of getting hdtv. The only drawback is that only Hughes or Samsung receivers are offered.

Yeah, I got this deal at Tweeter last week. A 3 lnb dish, installation, and the SIR-T160 HDTV receiver for $399 for new directtv customers. The installation went great and I'm very pleased with the Samsung. To add an additional non-hdtv receiver is $499.

Dont know, just call D* and ask about any HDTV deals. If that does not work call their retention center.

The $399 offer to existing customers seems pretty standard now. I called D* a couple of times because they will not tell you in advance what box they are going to give you. This is somewhat of a problem for me as the Hughes box does not have RGB (which I prefer over the component option).

Best Buy is charging $499 for the stand alone Hughes recevier, at least on the web site. Is there anyway to get it for $399?

I just called DTV actually as well before reading this thread. According to the csr, this high def deal they have just started 2 days ago? I said I'll call back after I do some more research online (the avs forums ;) hehehe ) to see if indeed it would be a good buy.

So should I keep looking for a 399 receiver/phase3 deal? I have only been able to find the 499 deals for new customers. We have 2 tweeters in nashville, and I called one of them, but they were unsure of the deal you got in huntsville. I think they may try to call down there to verify it. Is there any other info I could use to get that t160 deal?

I just confirmed with the tweeter here in nashville that they do have the samsung 160+lnb+install deal for 399. I don't know if I have ever seen a better price, all things considered.

Bummer - Just called the Tweeter here in Fairfax, Va. and they *were* offering the same deal, but they're out of the TS-160 so they're substituting the E86 instead. :(

They said the deal is based on stock in hand, and the East coast isn't getting as many units of the TS160.

Big difference between the E86 and the TS160. For starters, the E86 only has component outs while the Samsung has DVI and VGA.

I'd jump all over that deal if I could get it here :-(

So what would i use DVI and VGA for? My tv has a dvi input, will that matter here? I'm a bit of a noob, so your clarification would be greatly appreciated.

The quality of video connections, in descending order are:
DVI, VGA, component, s-video, composite.

The DVI connection provides and all-digital path from the receiver to the TV, therefore there's no chance of introducing signal artifacts from the digital to analog conversion that occurs in the other connection types.

If you've got an HD set with a DVI input, I wouldn't even look at anything without a DVI output.

well, apparently when they type the deal into the computer, the deal comes up and then throws in an e86 instead of the 160, even though the 160 is listed in the deal. The manager says that he has a couple of 160's in stock, but that even though the deal says 160, if the computer substitutes in an e86, he doesn't think he can change it. Why does it not surprise me that these guys (even the managers) have no clue.

i am going to see if they will honor the original deal, but even the manager wouldn't give me a straight answer, so it may be a losing cause.

GreyGhost, thanks for the heads up...that's the kind of info i needed!

So with my Sony hs510 having dvi input and the t-160 having a dvi hookup too, i should run a dvi cable from one to the other?

Does this mean I don't buy the composite monster cables? Would you recommend any certain dvi cables for the best PQ of standard channels (non-hd)?

Would i still get the composite cables for my dvd player?

Thanks!

Well, I just ordered the dealt thru D*. Again they were very non-specific on the Hughes or the Samsung, and would not even put a preference on the order. I'm sure I'll be happy with either one, although I'm hoping for the Sammy :-)

RGoldberg: Please keep us updated on your order. I am still considering wheter to jump on this deal or not but the chance of getting the rca instead of the samsung has me thinking second thoughts. I really need the dvi input....
